Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Short answer: Nintendo does not currently offer native Windows, macOS, or Linux versions of its major console Zelda games, including The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. You can, however, play Zelda on a PC monitor by connecting a Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 through a capture card. Emulation is technically possible for some games, but the legality of the emulator, game files, firmware, encryption keys, and circumvention methods depends on the details and your country.
What “playing Zelda on PC” actually means
Search results often blur together several different experiences. These are not interchangeable:

| Option | Available? | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Native PC port | Generally no | A Windows, macOS, or Linux build installs and runs directly on the computer. |
| Official Nintendo PC app | No general option identified | Nintendo does not provide a PC launcher for its console Zelda catalog. |
| Emulation | Technically possible for some systems | Third-party software imitates console hardware and runs compatible game data. |
| Console-to-PC display | Yes | A Switch or Switch 2 runs the game while the PC displays, records, or streams the video. |
So, if you want Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom to run entirely inside Windows, macOS, or Linux, there is no official general solution. If you simply want to use your PC screen, the capture-card method is the safest practical route.

Are Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom available for PC?
Nintendo’s official product pages list Breath of the Wild as a Nintendo Switch game and Tears of the Kingdom as a Nintendo Switch game. Neither page lists Windows, macOS, or Linux as a supported platform:

- With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
- Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
- A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
- The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
Tears of the Kingdom also has a separate Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. That is an enhanced console edition, not a PC release. Nintendo describes improvements including performance, loading, resolution, and HDR-related features, and identifies the edition as playable on Switch 2.
The same distinction applies to the wider franchise. Nintendo’s official Zelda site presents current releases as Nintendo console products rather than native computer games. That does not justify the absolute claim that no Zelda-related software has ever appeared on a computer; the accurate point is that Nintendo’s major, Nintendo-published console Zelda games do not currently have official native Windows, macOS, or Linux releases.
The safest way to play Zelda using a PC
Use a Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 to run the game, then send its HDMI output to your PC through a capture card. The computer acts as a display, recording system, or streaming machine; it does not run the Zelda game.
What you need
- A Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 with a dock and HDMI output.
- A capture card with HDMI input and USB connection. The Elgato Game Capture HD60 X is one representative example, not a requirement.
- An HDMI cable from the dock to the capture card.
- A PC with a suitable USB port and capture software.
- Optional: a second HDMI cable and television or monitor for passthrough.
- A Switch-compatible controller, unless you already have one.
A standard Switch or Switch 2 is preferable for this setup. Do not buy a Switch Lite expecting conventional docked HDMI capture; it does not provide the normal dock-output path.

How to connect it
- Place the Switch or Switch 2 in its dock and connect the dock’s HDMI OUT to the capture card’s HDMI IN.
- Connect the capture card to the PC over USB.
- For passthrough, connect the capture card’s HDMI OUT to a television or monitor.
- Turn on the console and select the correct display input.
- Install the capture-card manufacturer’s official driver or utility if the device requires one.
Set up OBS Studio
OBS Studio is a free option for viewing, recording, and streaming the feed.
- Install OBS Studio from the official site.
- Open OBS and create or select a scene.
- Click Sources, select Video Capture Device, and choose the capture card.
- Start with the device’s default resolution, frame rate, and color settings.
- Configure the capture device’s audio option or add the device as an audio source if necessary.
- Check the preview, then record or stream when the picture and sound are working.
Use HDMI passthrough as your primary gameplay screen when possible. The OBS preview can introduce noticeable delay, particularly on inexpensive or poorly configured capture devices. The PC preview is fine for recording and streaming, but a separate passthrough display is usually better for responsive play.
Can you emulate Zelda on a PC?
An emulator is software that imitates the hardware of another console. It is not a PC port: the game remains a console release running through a software layer. Different Zelda games target different Nintendo systems, so technical compatibility varies by title and emulator.
The legal issue is separate from whether the emulator launches successfully. It can involve:

- the emulator software itself;
- the game data or ROM;
- console firmware and system files;
- encryption keys;
- the method used to copy or decrypt data; and
- your country’s copyright and anti-circumvention rules.
Owning a cartridge or digital copy is not a blanket authorization to download a ROM, firmware, or encryption key from a third-party website. Likewise, “I own the game” does not automatically make every copying or circumvention method lawful everywhere. Personal backup rules vary by jurisdiction and by the specific technical act involved.
Nintendo’s published policy is firmly opposed to unauthorized copies, ROM distribution, circumvention software, and unauthorized emulators. Its guidance says authentic Nintendo games should be obtained through the Nintendo eShop or Nintendo’s website, and identifies ROM downloads from peer-to-peer networks and third-party file hosts as unauthorized copies. Nintendo also states that some unauthorized emulators circumvent security measures and may be unlawful. See Nintendo’s intellectual-property and piracy FAQ and its emulator-software guidance.
This is not legal advice. If you are considering a particular backup or emulation method, consult a qualified lawyer familiar with the law where you live. For most readers, the clear low-risk recommendation is to play modern Zelda on Nintendo hardware and avoid downloaded ROMs, keys, firmware, and circumvention packages.

What about classic Zelda games?
Older Zelda releases are a separate case. Some classic games may be available through Nintendo’s classic-game services on supported Nintendo hardware, depending on the title, region, current catalog, and subscription requirements. That access is not the same as downloading a native Windows game.

Catalogs change, so check Nintendo’s current service and game listings for your country before assuming that a particular NES, SNES, Game Boy, or Nintendo 64 Zelda title is included. If the game is offered through a Nintendo service, you still generally need the supported Nintendo hardware to play it.
Be careful with “Breath of the Wild PC” downloads
Websites advertising a free “PC version” of Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom are not evidence of an official port. Treat these offers as a piracy, malware, or scam warning.
Particularly risky signs include:
- ROM downloads, torrents, or third-party game-file hosts;
- “pre-installed emulator” bundles;
- files that ask you to disable antivirus protection;
- fake installers using Nintendo branding;
- requests for Nintendo account credentials or payment details;
- unusual browser extensions or download managers; and
- claims that a recent Nintendo game is an officially licensed free PC release.
Do not disable security software to install an unofficial Zelda package. Nintendo provides guidance for reporting potential infringements through its infringement-reporting page.
Troubleshooting a capture-card setup
Black screen or no signal
- Confirm that the dock has power and that the console is seated correctly.
- Check that the cable runs from dock HDMI OUT to capture-card HDMI IN.
- Choose the correct HDMI source on the passthrough display.
- Reconnect the USB cable and try another USB port.
- Check the manufacturer’s driver and utility.
- If a protected HDMI device is in the chain, HDCP or another signal-protection issue may prevent capture.
Picture but no audio
Check OBS’s capture-device audio setting, the OBS mixer, and the console’s audio-output configuration. Test the capture card’s utility if it includes one; that helps separate an OBS setting problem from a cabling or driver problem.
Best Value
- Versatile compatibility: supports Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One X/S consoles and PC Win10 and above (including the game platform Steam).
- Precise control: features Hall joysticks and Hall triggers for a comfortable feeling, long service life and improved game accuracy.
- Plug and Play Convenience: Wired USB connection (removable) for easy setup and instant play without the need for additional drivers.
- Customizable experience: Includes 2 custom backbuttons that allow users to eliminate false triggers and improve their gaming experience.
- Impressive gameplay: Provides a pulsating vibration trigger and an asymmetric vibration grip motor for intense tactile feedback.
Choppy video or delay
Try a different USB port, close bandwidth-heavy applications, and match OBS’s resolution and frame-rate settings to the console output. Use HDMI passthrough for play if the preview feels delayed.
Why won’t my laptop HDMI port work?
Most laptop HDMI ports are output-only. They send the laptop’s picture to another screen and cannot accept the Switch’s video signal. A capture card supplies the missing HDMI input.
Which option is right for you?
| Your goal | Best route | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Play modern Zelda legitimately | Switch or Switch 2 | Requires Nintendo hardware. |
| Use a PC monitor | Dock plus capture card, or connect the dock directly to the monitor | A capture card adds cost and possible latency. |
| Record or stream | Capture card plus OBS Studio | Requires additional setup and troubleshooting. |
| Play classic Zelda | Check Nintendo’s current classic-game catalog | Availability and supported hardware vary. |
| Run Zelda entirely inside Windows, macOS, or Linux | No official general route identified | Emulation introduces technical and legal complications. |
Nintendo’s cloud-version documentation discusses games streamed to Switch-family systems and says cloud versions require a stable, consistent high-speed internet connection. It does not establish a general official service for streaming Zelda natively to a Windows or macOS PC. Check the specific title, territory, and service rather than assuming that “cloud gaming” solves the PC question: Nintendo’s cloud-version FAQ.
