How to Play the Modern Warfare Reboot Campaigns in Order (2019–2023)

Play the reboot campaigns in this order: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019), Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (2022), then Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III (2023). This is both the release order and the intended story-continuity order. The sequence is separate from the original Modern Warfare trilogy released between 2007 and 2011.

The correct Modern Warfare reboot campaign order

The reboot is a three-game campaign arc. Start with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019), continue with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (2022), and finish with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III (2023). Activision presents the 2019 title as a re-imagining, Blizzard describes the 2022 campaign as an indirect continuation, and Activision calls the 2023 campaign a direct sequel that follows the events of Modern Warfare II.

Play order Full title Campaign relationship Key point
1 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019) Beginning of the reboot continuity Introduces this reboot’s versions of its characters and conflict.
2 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (2022) Indirect continuation Set three years after Task Force 141’s original formation.
3 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III (2023) Direct sequel to MWII Continues immediately after the 2022 campaign and adds Open Combat Missions.

For the publisher descriptions behind that continuity, see Activision’s introduction to Modern Warfare (2019), Blizzard’s Modern Warfare II launch guide, and Activision’s Modern Warfare III launch communications.

Why this order works

Unlike some game series that jump backward and forward through their timelines, the reboot’s three campaigns were released in the same broad order as their narrative progression. You do not need a release-order-versus-chronological-order decision here. The practical question is identifying the correct editions, because the original trilogy uses nearly identical names.

  • TACTICAL DMZ OPERATIONS — Deploy behind enemy lines as an off‑the‑books asset, making high‑risk decisions on objectives and extraction in a dynamic mode where every run counts.

The 2019 game establishes a new continuity

Modern Warfare (2019) is not a remaster of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Activision describes it as a re-imagining. It uses familiar ideas and character names while presenting a different version of the setting, relationships and campaign events. Beginning here gives you the context that the later games assume without requiring knowledge of the 2007 game.

MWII follows the reboot rather than the 2009 game

Modern Warfare II (2022) is the second campaign in this reboot line. Its “II” does not point back to Modern Warfare 2 (2009), which belongs to the original continuity. Blizzard’s launch material describes the 2022 story as an indirect continuation of the 2019 campaign and places it three years after Task Force 141’s original formation.

MWIII is the immediate follow-up

Modern Warfare III (2023) is the third reboot campaign, not a new version of Modern Warfare 3 (2011). Activision describes it as a direct sequel to Modern Warfare II and says its story continues immediately after the 2022 events. Playing it last preserves that direct handoff.

1. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019)

What this campaign is

The 2019 game is the starting point for the reboot’s single-player storyline. Activision identifies it as a re-imagining with a Campaign mode. It establishes the reboot’s interpretation of its operators, political tensions and counterterrorism team, so it is the best place to learn who the recurring characters are before later campaigns add new circumstances.

Do not select a product page or disc simply because it says “Modern Warfare.” Confirm the year and the complete title. A listing for the original Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is a different game, even though both titles are commonly shortened to “MW.”

How to approach the first playthrough

Play the Campaign from its beginning rather than starting with any unlocked mission. The first game is where the reboot introduces its version of the world and its central team. If your installation presents several modes on one menu, choose Campaign; multiplayer, cooperative modes and later seasonal content are not substitutes for the campaign sequence.

Optional Special Ops material

Activision says the cooperative Special Ops mode continues the Campaign story through Operations. Those Operations can add context after you finish the main campaign, but the official material does not establish that every Operation is required before starting Modern Warfare II. Treat them as optional additional story content, not as a fourth required entry in the main order.

2. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (2022)

Where it fits

Start the 2022 Campaign only after completing the 2019 Campaign if you want the intended progression. It is an indirect continuation, so it builds on the reboot’s established characters and Task Force 141 without functioning as a scene-for-scene continuation of the previous game’s ending.

The campaign is set three years after Task Force 141’s original formation, according to Blizzard’s launch guide. That time gap explains why the game can introduce a changed operational situation while remaining in the same continuity.

Title and year checks

The full name matters: Modern Warfare II (2022). It is not Modern Warfare 2 (2009). The 2009 title is the second game of the original trilogy and has different continuity. When searching a store, filter by the 2022 release year and verify that the product description identifies the reboot campaign.

What you need to play

You do not need to complete every 2019 Special Ops Operation, multiplayer season or other side mode to begin MWII’s Campaign. The three main Campaigns are the essential path supported by the official continuity descriptions. Optional modes may use the same characters or setting, but they are not established here as prerequisites for the 2022 story.

3. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III (2023)

Why it comes last

Activision positions Modern Warfare III (2023) as the direct sequel to MWII (2022), with the story continuing immediately after the preceding campaign. That makes it the natural finale of the reboot’s current three-game Campaign sequence.

The full game, including Campaign, launched on November 10, 2023. Eligible digital preorders could receive early Campaign access, but that early-access timing does not alter the order: the campaign still follows MWII.

Open Combat Missions

MWIII combines traditional cinematic missions with Open Combat Missions. Activision’s campaign announcement identifies Open Combat Missions as a defining part of the design. These missions can give you more freedom in how you approach objectives, while the surrounding story remains part of the same direct continuation.

Open Combat Missions change mission approach, not campaign placement. You should not insert them between earlier games or treat them as a separate prequel. Play the complete MWIII Campaign after MWII, using the mission’s available routes and equipment in whatever order the game presents.

Do not confuse the year with the original trilogy

Modern Warfare III (2023) is distinct from Modern Warfare 3 (2011). The Roman numeral and release year are the fastest way to distinguish them. If a listing omits the year, check the cover, publisher description and platform page before purchasing or installing.

Step-by-step: how to play the trilogy without picking the wrong game

  1. Write down the three exact titles. Use “Modern Warfare (2019),” “Modern Warfare II (2022),” and “Modern Warfare III (2023)” when searching a store or your library.
  2. Check the release year on every listing. The original trilogy’s entries are from 2007, 2009 and 2011. A listing from those years is outside this reboot order.
  3. Verify that Campaign is included. Some listings or installations expose multiplayer and other modes prominently. Confirm that the product contains the single-player Campaign before downloading.
  4. Install the 2019 Campaign first. Launch the Campaign and complete it from the opening mission.
  5. Use Special Ops only if you want extra context. The 2019 Operations continue campaign material but are optional for the essential three-game route.
  6. Install and play MWII (2022). Begin its Campaign after the 2019 Campaign. You can ignore multiplayer, cooperative activities and other optional content unless you specifically want them.
  7. Install and play MWIII (2023). Finish the 2023 Campaign last. Its immediate continuation of MWII and its Open Combat Missions belong at the end of this sequence.
  8. Keep the years in your notes. If you return to the series later, writing the year beside each title prevents accidentally switching to the original trilogy.

What is and is not included in this order

Included: the three reboot Campaigns

The recommended sequence covers the single-player Campaigns of the 2019, 2022 and 2023 games. It answers the question of how to experience the reboot’s principal story arc with the fewest continuity complications.

Optional: 2019 Special Ops Operations

Special Ops Operations from the 2019 game are additional cooperative story material. They can be played after the 2019 Campaign if you want to explore the continuation Activision describes, but the available official descriptions do not say that they must be completed before MWII.

Not established by this order: every Warzone event, Raid or side mission

This three-game list is not a complete chronology for every Warzone event, Special Ops mission, MWII Raid or other content released across different modes. The official pages used to establish the Campaign order do not provide a full cross-mode timeline. If you are trying to follow every connected event, treat that as a separate chronology rather than inserting unverified material into the three-Campaign sequence.

Original trilogy versus reboot: a title decoder

Game you may see listed Continuity Use for the reboot order? How to identify it
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2007) Original trilogy No Arabic numeral “4”; 2007 release.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009) Original trilogy No “2” rather than “II”; 2009 release.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (2011) Original trilogy No “3” rather than “III”; 2011 release.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019) Reboot Yes — first 2019 release and re-imagining designation.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (2022) Reboot Yes — second Roman numeral “II”; 2022 release.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III (2023) Reboot Yes — third Roman numeral “III”; 2023 release.

The year is more reliable than a shortened nickname. “MW2” and “MW3” are used informally for multiple games, while the reboot entries are specifically the 2022 and 2023 Roman-numeral releases.

Choosing a copy or platform

The story order is identical regardless of the platform on which you play, but the product you buy still needs checking. Current availability, pricing and platform-specific listing details are not established here, so verify them directly before purchase.

  • Confirm the exact edition and year. A similarly named remaster, original release or bundle may not contain the reboot Campaign you expect.
  • Check whether the format is physical or digital. Physical packaging and digital storefront pages can use different artwork or abbreviated names; use the year and full title to confirm.
  • Check Campaign access in the installation. Some releases present Campaign as a separate install or downloadable component. Make sure it is selected before launching.
  • Check regional and platform availability. Store catalogs, ownership requirements and downloadable components can differ by region and platform. The publisher’s current listing is the authority for your setup.
  • Do not assume a bundle contains all three games. A bundle name alone does not establish which Campaigns or editions are included; read the itemized contents.

Recommended play plans

If you want only the essential story

Play the 2019 Campaign, then the 2022 Campaign, then the 2023 Campaign. Skip Special Ops and other modes until after you finish the main sequence. This gives you the complete three-game reboot arc without requiring a separate chronology.

If you want extra 2019 story material

Complete Modern Warfare (2019), then play its Special Ops Operations, and move to MWII (2022). Because the official description does not label those Operations as mandatory prerequisites, you can also postpone them and return after completing all three Campaigns.

If you are familiar with the original trilogy

Do not use your memory of the 2007–2011 plot to reorder the reboot. Start with the 2019 game anyway. Familiar names do not make the stories interchangeable, and the reboot’s character versions and continuity are established in the newer Campaign.

If you already started MWII

You can finish it, but for the cleanest narrative progression, return to the 2019 Campaign before continuing with later games. After MWII, play MWIII, whose story follows MWII immediately.

Final checklist

  • 2019 Campaign completed first.
  • 2022 Campaign completed second.
  • 2023 Campaign completed third.
  • Years verified on every game listing.
  • Original 2007, 2009 and 2011 games kept separate.
  • Special Ops treated as optional additional material.
  • Warzone events, Raids and other side content not assumed to fit this three-game order without a separate chronology.

The answer is therefore straightforward: Modern Warfare (2019) → Modern Warfare II (2022) → Modern Warfare III (2023). That sequence matches the reboot’s release path and the continuity descriptions supplied by Activision and Blizzard, while keeping the original trilogy and optional modes in their proper scope.
