Barker, built as an entry to Hackaday.io’s Tiny Games Challenge. Hold the button to fire the lander’s engine and rise; release it to descend. Manage fuel and temperature, avoid meteors, land at Moon Base P to rescue the puppies, then fly on to the rescue pod.
How the puppy rescue game works
The game gives you a small lander moving across rough, side-scrolling Moon terrain. Its rescue has two stages: first land at Moon Base P, then carry the puppies onward to a rescue pod. A safe landing anywhere else is not enough—the lander is destroyed if it touches down outside the designated base.
Control ascent and descent
There is one button. Holding it fires the rocket engine and pushes the lander upward; letting go allows it to descend. The creator also describes the button as being used for reset, though the project description does not explain the reset procedure.
Manage the hazards
- Fuel and heat: Keeping the engine on too long drains fuel faster or overheats the rocket. Watch the temperature gauge and use engine bursts rather than holding the button continuously.
- Meteors: Meteors cross the sky and can destroy the lander, so engine control must account for hazards as well as the landing site.
- Landing zone: Aim for Moon Base P. A landing elsewhere destroys the lander instead of completing the puppy rescue.
- Second destination: After collecting the puppies at the base, continue flying to the rescue pod to win.
What the display shows
The game runs on a 128 × 64-pixel OLED. The top 16 rows are yellow and reserved for gauges; the lower 48 rows are blue and show the lunar terrain. Barker says the terrain background is 1,280 pixels wide and scrolls left one pixel at a time, allowing the compact screen to show a moving landscape.
#1 Best Overall
- BOARD GAME – Introducing Fire Engine Rescue by Mudpuppy, the most adorable cooperative board game for preschoolers! Cooperative games are a growing category where players must work together as one team, winning or losing together, rather than competing against one another. Young children will be delighted by the furry depiction of a bold red fire engine as they work together to rescue kittens around town.
- HOW TO PLAY – The kittens have gotten themselves stuck in trees around the town and need your help! Players work together to rescue them before the fire chief returns to the station. But watch out! Traffic lights on the gameboard can change from green to red and stop you in your tracks! The game includes a game board, 27 cards, 4 traffic light tiles, 4 kitten tiles, 2 wooden fire engine movers, and 1 stand-up fire chief. The unique wooden fire engine movers have slots in the backs, that the kitten tiles slot into as they ride back to the station–a detail preschoolers are sure to delight in.
- MAKES THE PERFECT GIFT – With its high quality construction and adorable design, this cooperative board game is the perfect way to introduce children to important concepts and skills like respect, building community, deepening family relationships, and supports social-emotional development.
- Mudpuppy – Mudpuppy offers a wide range of non-digital and environmentally friendly puzzles, games, and toys for children and the young at heart. We believe in creating toys that help kids' unplug and spend less time in front of screens with modern designs that are fun and interesting.
Hardware and implementation
Barker identifies a XIAO ESP32-C3 board and an SSD1306 OLED display as the core hardware. The control is a single button, but the project description does not name its model or give enough detail to identify the display module’s exact configuration.
The game is written in Arduino C++ and uses state-machine logic, according to its creator. The project page lists 18 files, including bitmap assets, and describes converting one-bit BMP images into header files for storage in flash memory. Those details describe the maker build; the available descriptions do not establish a downloadable PC or mobile version.

Contest context and what is known
The project page says Barker created the game on August 9, 2024, and submitted it to Hackaday.io’s Tiny Games Challenge. Hackaday covered it on August 19, 2024, describing it as a side-scroller with elements reminiscent of Lunar Lander and Flappy Bird. That is a comparison by the publication, not a formal genre label from the creator. The available information does not establish the contest’s full rules, judging, prizes, or the project’s final placement.
For the creator’s description and build details, see Luke J. Barker’s Lunar Navigation Game project page. Hackaday’s coverage is at 2024 Tiny Games Contest: Save The Stranded Puppies Of Moon Base P!.
