You can play the original PlayStation version of Crash Team Racing on a desktop PC by using a PS1 emulator such as DuckStation, a legitimate copy of the game, and a PlayStation BIOS image obtained from your own console. DuckStation offers Windows, Linux, and macOS builds, supports keyboard and controller input, and does not include a BIOS.

The main choices are whether your PC can read the original disc, whether to use a personal disc image instead, and whether you prefer keyboard or controller input. The BIOS and game are separate requirements: DuckStation does not provide either one. This guide covers the original PS1 release, not the later Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled remake.

What you need to play CTR on a PC

This guide is about the original PlayStation release of CTR: Crash Team Racing, not the later Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled. To set up the original on a computer, you need three things:

  • A PS1 emulator: DuckStation is one desktop option. Its project README lists builds for Windows 10/11, Linux, and macOS. Download it from the DuckStation project, rather than an unrelated download mirror.
  • A PlayStation BIOS image from your own console: DuckStation requires a PS1 or PS2 BIOS image to start games and does not bundle one. Its documentation directs users to dump the BIOS from their own console.
  • The original game: Use your PS1 disc if your PC can read it, or consider a disc image made from your own copy. The game’s historical release listing records regional PlayStation versions, including the US release with product ID SCUS-94426; see the release information.

A compatible optical drive is necessary for direct disc play. If your computer lacks one, an external USB optical drive is an optional hardware solution. You can play with a keyboard or a game controller; a controller is not a requirement.

DuckStation is free software, so you do not need to buy the emulator itself. The original game, a compatible optical drive if you do not already have one, and a controller if you want one are separate considerations. No particular price can be assumed for those items: used-game availability, region, disc condition, seller, and hardware choice can all vary. If you buy a used copy, check that it is the correct regional PS1 release and that the disc condition is acceptable; a listing for Nitro-Fueled is not a listing for the PS1 original.

There is no need to purchase a controller just to meet DuckStation’s input requirement. The emulator supports keyboard input as well as game controllers. A controller is a preference, not a prerequisite.

Make sure you have the PS1 game, not Nitro-Fueled

CTR: Crash Team Racing is the original PS1 game. Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled is a separate remake. The Activision game page describes Nitro-Fueled and lists Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch. The PlayStation product page lists the PS4 release. Those official pages do not list a PC version, and the remake is not the original PS1 release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you specifically want the PS1 game, an emulator is the route covered here. If you want the remake, check the publisher or platform holder for current availability in your region rather than assuming that a PC listing for another Crash game applies to it.

Choice What it is What to consider
Original CTR: Crash Team Racing The PlayStation game released for PS1; regional releases are recorded in the historical listing. On PC, it requires a PS1 emulator, the game media, and a BIOS image.
Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled A later remake listed by Activision for Xbox One, PS4, and Nintendo Switch, and by PlayStation for PS4. The cited official pages do not list a PC release; it is not the PS1 game.

That distinction matters when you are searching for a copy or troubleshooting. A disc labeled for the original PlayStation is the game media route described here. A product listing for the remake, even if it uses the same characters and title wording, does not supply the PS1 game files needed for this setup. Conversely, the emulator approach does not turn the PS1 version into the remake; it runs the original release.

Set up DuckStation with your own game and BIOS

DuckStation’s README is the source for the emulator’s listed operating systems, BIOS requirement, input support, and disc-play notes. It does not justify assuming a particular menu name or that every optical drive behaves the same way, so use the emulator’s current documentation if its interface differs from the steps below.

  1. Install a desktop build. Choose the DuckStation build for Windows 10/11, Linux, or macOS from the project’s official location. Avoid download sites that repackage the emulator or offer BIOS files.
  2. Prepare a BIOS from your own PlayStation hardware. DuckStation requires a PS1 or PS2 BIOS image and does not supply one. Follow the project’s directions for dumping it from a console you own. Do not substitute a BIOS downloaded from a third party.
  3. Choose your game-media route. If your PC has a suitable optical drive, insert the original PS1 disc and use DuckStation’s documented disc-play support. If the computer cannot read the disc, a disc image made from your own copy may be more convenient, but the legality of making or using a copy depends on your jurisdiction and method.
  4. Point the emulator to the required files. Configure DuckStation to use the BIOS image you obtained and select the disc or game image through the emulator’s current interface. The exact controls and labels can vary by build; use the project documentation if you cannot find the relevant settings.
  5. Set up input and start the game. DuckStation supports keyboard or game-controller input. Configure the controls you prefer, then launch the game from the selected media.

DuckStation’s project documentation says a PS1 or PS2 BIOS image is required and that users should dump one from their own console. It also notes that a BIOS region mismatch can cause compatibility issues. If you have a choice of BIOS images from your own hardware, use one compatible with the game’s region.

Think of the BIOS and game media as two distinct dependencies. The BIOS is a system file used by the emulator; it is not the game. The disc or game image is the game media; it does not replace the BIOS requirement. Having a legitimate copy of the game therefore does not remove the need to provide a BIOS from your own PlayStation hardware.

The practical setup order is to obtain the official emulator build, prepare the BIOS, decide how the PC will access the game, and then configure input. If a step fails, change one dependency at a time rather than assuming that an unresponsive game is caused by the disc alone. For instance, a BIOS that is missing or from a mismatched region is a different issue from a drive that cannot read the disc, and neither is the same as an input device that is not configured.

The Windows, Linux, and macOS listings establish that DuckStation has builds for those desktop systems; they do not mean every computer on those systems has a guaranteed performance level or optical-drive compatibility. The cited documentation does not provide a specific hardware benchmark or a promise for every PC configuration. Use the project’s current platform instructions and confirm that your own system and peripherals are supported.

Disc or disc image: choose based on your hardware and local law

Playing from the physical disc

Direct disc play avoids creating a game image, but depends on the PC’s optical drive and its ability to read the disc. DuckStation documents support for playing from discs; that does not guarantee every built-in or external drive will behave identically. If the computer has no optical drive, an external USB optical drive is one possible hardware option, but its compatibility with the disc and emulator still depends on the device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before choosing this route, check whether the computer has an optical drive at all and whether it can read the PS1 disc. A drive that is present is not automatically a guarantee that DuckStation will be able to use it as expected. If you run into a disc-reading problem, check the drive and the emulator’s current documentation rather than immediately concluding that the PS1 release cannot be played on a PC.

An external USB optical drive is optional equipment, not a required purchase for everyone. It is relevant only if the PC lacks a suitable internal drive and you want to try direct disc playback. The available product information does not establish a particular model or price, so check compatibility and current specifications before buying one.

Using a disc image

A game image can be more convenient when the computer has no optical drive or the drive does not work well with the disc. Making or using that image raises a separate legal question: owning a disc does not automatically establish that every copying method is permitted. Copyright exceptions, anti-circumvention rules, and software-license terms vary by jurisdiction and circumstance.

Sony’s US Software EULA provides license context for PlayStation software, but it is not a universal ruling on personal backups or copying methods. Do not treat this article as legal advice, and do not assume that a rule in one country settles what is allowed where you live.

There are two separate decisions here: whether a disc image is convenient for your hardware, and whether the way you create or use one is allowed where you are. DuckStation’s disc support makes a personal image a possible media route, but it does not settle the legal question. Do not infer that possession of an original copy guarantees that any extraction, copying, or use method is lawful. If the legal position matters to your decision, check the applicable rules for your jurisdiction and the particular method.

Likewise, a game-image download from an unrelated website is not a substitute for the legitimate-copy setup described here. The guide covers using the original disc or a personal image of your own copy, and it does not direct readers to game or BIOS download sites.

Which route should you pick?

  • Try direct disc play if you have the original disc and a compatible drive, and want to avoid making a game image.
  • Consider a personal image if a disc image better suits your computer, while separately checking local rules for the copying method.
  • Consider original PlayStation hardware if you want to use the physical disc without setting up an emulator and BIOS.

There is no universally best route: drive support, convenience, the hardware you already own, and local law are all relevant. Buying another device can make sense only if it solves a specific gap in your setup; an external drive is unnecessary if your current PC reads the disc, and a controller is unnecessary if you are comfortable using the keyboard.

Choose keyboard or controller controls

DuckStation supports both keyboard input and game controllers, so there is no requirement to buy a gamepad. A controller may feel more familiar to players used to PlayStation racing games, while keyboard input avoids an additional purchase. Either way, configure the emulator’s input settings before starting a race and check that the controls respond as expected.

If an input device is not recognized, first confirm that the operating system sees it, then revisit DuckStation’s input configuration and select or map the device there. A keyboard or controller preference is separate from whether the game disc, BIOS, or emulator is working.

Choose based on the equipment you already have and what you find comfortable. A game controller is an optional quality-of-use choice; it does not change which version of CTR you are playing or replace any of the emulator’s software and media requirements. If you do buy one, confirm that it works with your PC before purchasing. The project documentation supports game-controller input in general, but the sources do not endorse a specific controller model.

Troubleshoot the likely setup problems

  • The emulator will not start a game: Check that DuckStation can access a valid BIOS image. The project requires a PS1 or PS2 BIOS and does not provide one.
  • The game does not appear or launch from a disc: Confirm the optical drive can read the disc and that DuckStation is set to use the disc. Drive capabilities can affect disc reading, so a failure with one drive does not prove that the game itself is unsupported.
  • You are using a BIOS from a different region: DuckStation’s README warns that a region mismatch can cause compatibility issues. Use a compatible BIOS obtained from your own hardware where available.
  • The controls do not respond: Check whether the operating system recognizes the keyboard or controller and whether the device is configured in DuckStation. Controller ownership is optional; the emulator also supports keyboard input.
  • You expected the remake or a native PC release: Confirm which game you have. The official Nitro-Fueled pages cited here list console platforms and do not establish a PC version; the original PS1 title is a different release.

DuckStation is an emulator, not an official compatibility certification for every game and hardware combination. The community project OnlineCTR says it runs under DuckStation, but that statement is not an official guarantee from the emulator project or game publisher.

When troubleshooting, separate the layers. If DuckStation opens but does not start a game, verify that a BIOS is available and configured. If the BIOS is in place but the disc is not detected, investigate the optical drive and media route. If the game starts but a control does not respond, check the input configuration rather than changing the BIOS or buying another game copy. The documented region caveat applies to the BIOS; the drive caveat applies to reading physical media; and input support does not guarantee a particular device is already mapped.

Also distinguish a compatibility report from a guarantee. OnlineCTR is a community project that says it runs under DuckStation; it is not an official statement that every version, BIOS, disc, drive, or PC combination will work. Use the current DuckStation documentation when the interface or supported behavior changes.

When original PlayStation hardware may be simpler

If you want to use the original disc without configuring an emulator or handling BIOS files, playing it on compatible original PlayStation hardware is an alternative. PC emulation can be useful when you want to play on a desktop, but the setup has dependencies that the console route does not: a suitable emulator build, a BIOS image, and either a readable disc or a game image. Which route is simpler depends on the hardware and game media you already have.

The comparison is practical rather than absolute. A PC gives you a way to run the PS1 release on a desktop, but you must arrange the emulator, BIOS, media access, and input. A compatible PlayStation lets you use the original disc directly, without configuring those emulator-specific dependencies. If you already have a PC optical drive and your own BIOS dump, the emulator route may be convenient; if you would need to obtain multiple pieces of hardware and files, original hardware may involve fewer setup steps.

Neither route changes the identity of the game: both are ways to play the original PS1 release, while Nitro-Fueled remains a separate remake. Consider what you already own before buying anything. The available information does not establish current stock or prices for used consoles, discs, or peripherals, so compare actual listings carefully and account for regional version and condition.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I play my original PS1 Crash Team Racing disc on a PC with DuckStation?

Yes, DuckStation documents direct disc play, provided your PC has an optical drive that can read the disc. Drive capabilities vary, so a disc-reading problem may be related to the drive rather than the game. An external USB optical drive is an optional route if your PC lacks a suitable one.

  • Original Playstation 1 Console

Do I need a BIOS for DuckStation?

Yes. DuckStation requires a PS1 or PS2 BIOS image and does not bundle one. Its project documentation directs users to dump a BIOS from their own PlayStation hardware. A BIOS from a different region can cause compatibility issues.

Is owning the PS1 disc enough to make any disc-image method legal?

Not necessarily. Copyright exceptions, anti-circumvention rules, software-license terms, and personal-copying rules vary by jurisdiction and by method. Sony’s US Software EULA gives license context but does not settle every personal-backup question worldwide. Check the rules that apply where you live.

Is Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled the same as the PS1 game, and is it on PC?

No. Nitro-Fueled is a separate remake; the original PS1 release is the game this guide covers. Activision lists Nitro-Fueled for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch, while PlayStation lists it for PS4. Those official pages do not list a PC version, so check current publisher or platform-holder listings for availability in your region.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need to buy a controller to play?

No. DuckStation supports keyboard input as well as game controllers. A controller is optional if you prefer gamepad controls; configure the input device in DuckStation before playing.

Does DuckStation cost money, and what else might I need to buy?

DuckStation is free software. Potential optional purchases include an external USB optical drive if your PC lacks a suitable drive, or a PC-compatible controller if you prefer one. Prices and compatibility vary, and neither purchase is required if your existing hardware works for your chosen setup.

What if DuckStation does not recognize the disc or controller?

For a disc issue, confirm the optical drive can read the disc and that DuckStation is set to use it; drive support can differ. For an input issue, first check that the operating system recognizes the keyboard or controller, then configure it in DuckStation. A controller is not required because keyboard input is supported.

The Bottom Line

To play the original PS1 Crash Team Racing on a PC, use a desktop PS1 emulator such as DuckStation, provide a BIOS dumped from your own PlayStation hardware, and use your original game disc or a personal disc image subject to local law. DuckStation supports Windows 10/11, Linux, and macOS, and accepts keyboard or controller input. Direct disc play depends on your optical drive; a controller and external USB drive are optional, not universal requirements. Nitro-Fueled is a separate remake, not the PS1 game.
