What to expect when playing with friends
No matchmaking in the reported setup
PC Gamer reported on October 1, 2026, that the browser version had no matchmaking: players create rooms and share links themselves. You will need to coordinate with your group rather than expect the game to find other players automatically. The report also noted that the host’s connection matters because play is peer-to-peer. Keyboard, mouse and optional gamepad
PC Gamer reports full mouse and keyboard support. The page also has controller-oriented settings, but the available sources do not identify a compatible controller or say that one is required. Treat a gamepad as an optional input choice, not a prerequisite.
What this browser build is—and what is not established

The related halo-re project description says its goal is to study and create an open-source reimplementation, and that the project does not include original game executables or required assets; it directs users to provide files from their own copy. That documentation does not establish exactly how the browser host handles game assets, nor does it settle the browser distribution’s rights status. PC Gamer described the legal situation as uncertain; there is not enough here to call the build definitively authorized or unlawful.
Availability is also not guaranteed. The browser page has experienced service disruption before, and an independently maintained project can change or disappear. If the page is unavailable, there may be no official browser version to fall back on.

The browser build is the direct route if your priority is trying the original Xbox version in a browser and inviting friends without setting up a conventional game installation. Choose an official Xbox option if you want a product distributed by Xbox; note that Campaign Evolved is a remake, while the Master Chief Collection is a separate collection that includes Combat Evolved content. Xbox’s cloud listings do not by themselves establish which subscription, device or regional requirements apply to you, so check the current product pages.
How widely was the browser build played?
PC Gamer reported that the developer said the browser version reached nearly 20,000 games within five hours across 115 countries shortly after launch. That is an early developer-reported usage figure relayed by the publication, not independently audited player telemetry.
