An unofficial PC port of the original 2000 Perfect Dark is available from a decompilation project. It adds mouse-and-keyboard controls, dual-analog support, widescreen resolutions and 60 fps support, but the project still calls it a work in progress and warns that issues and occasional crashes remain. To run it, you need a compatible copy of the game as a ROM; the project recommends the US V1.1 version.
Which Perfect Dark is this PC port?
This is a fan-made port of the original Nintendo 64 game, built from a decompilation project. It is not a PC release of the announced Perfect Dark reboot. The port’s developers describe it as mostly functional, not finished: single-player and split-screen multiplayer work, while minor graphics or gameplay problems and occasional crashes may still occur. The project README is the source for its current feature list and caveats.

The reboot is a separate project. In a June 9, 2024 overview, Xbox Wire described it as a single-player secret-agent thriller with a new story and universe, set in a near-future Cairo. That announcement discussed stealth, gadgets, traversal, parkour, melee and gunplay, and identified The Initiative and Crystal Dynamics as co-developers at the time. Those are announcement-era details, not features or a status update for this PC port. Read the Xbox Wire overview.
What the PC port supports
The project documents a range of changes intended to make the N64 game more comfortable on modern displays and controls. These are project specifications, not independent performance-test results.

What you need to run it
The port does not include the original game’s copyrighted assets. You need a compatible Perfect Dark ROM for the executable to use. The project recommends the US V1.1 (US Rev 1) ROM; US V1.0 is technically supported but not recommended. Japanese and PAL ROMs require their corresponding separately built executables. These are the project’s compatibility requirements; this does not determine what is lawful in any particular jurisdiction. Ars Technica also reported in its November 3, 2023 coverage that users must provide their own valid ROM. Read Ars Technica’s dated coverage.
According to the README, the quick start is to place the appropriate ROM in the port’s data directory and run the executable. The project lists builds for Windows 7 or later, Linux and macOS, as well as a Nintendo Switch target. Its stated graphics baseline is a GPU supporting OpenGL 3.0 or OpenGL ES 3.0 or later. These supported-platform and compatibility statements come from the project itself.

How to choose between the port and the Xbox version
The right option depends on whether you want the original game through an existing Xbox listing or the project’s PC-specific controls and display options. They are different distributions of the original game, not versions of the reboot.
| Option | What it is | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Unofficial PC port | A port of the original 2000 game from a decompilation project. | Project documentation lists mouse and keyboard, dual analog, widescreen, 60 fps, split-screen and basic mod support. Requires a compatible ROM; work-in-progress issues may remain. |
| Xbox Store version | The existing original game listed by Microsoft. | The store lists Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox Cloud Gaming as play options. Its page describes the story, gadgets, upgrades and multiplayer. See the Xbox Store listing. |
| Announced reboot | A separate game with a new story and universe. | Xbox Wire’s June 9, 2024 preview described a single-player secret-agent thriller; those are announcement-era details, not a playable version of the original PC port. See the announcement overview. |
Is the PC port finished?
No. The project README describes the game as mostly functional and lists remaining minor graphics and gameplay issues, along with possible occasional crashes. It does not establish that every level, setup or hardware configuration behaves identically. Treat its feature and platform statements as project documentation rather than a guarantee of a trouble-free experience.
