1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor a first playthrough, use release order: Silent Hill (1999) → Silent Hill 2 (2001) → Silent Hill 3 (2003) → Silent Hill 4: The Room (2004) → Origins (2007) → Homecoming (2008) → Shattered Memories (2009) → Downpour (2012) → Book of Memories (2012) → The Short Message (2024) → Silent Hill 2 (2024 remake) → Silent Hill f (2025) → Townfall (2026). This preserves how the series developed while keeping remakes, side entries and newer standalone stories in context.
If you care most about one connected storyline, play Origins → Silent Hill → Silent Hill 3. Silent Hill 3 directly follows the original, while Origins is a prequel. Townfall launched on September 24, 2026, but Konami has not assigned it a place in the older games’ event chronology, so treat it as a later standalone-feeling entry rather than a required sequel.

What order should I play the Silent Hill games in?
There are two sensible answers because the series contains direct sequels, prequels, reimaginings, remakes and largely separate stories. Release order is the safest first experience. A story-first route is shorter and emphasizes the original game’s clearest narrative continuation.

You might want to follow the order in which audiences received the games, reconstruct the limited connections between their stories, compare the original Silent Hill 2 with its remake, or simply find a modern entry that does not require a decade of backstory. Those goals produce slightly different recommendations, and none requires forcing every title into one perfectly numbered timeline.

Release order for a complete game run
The years below are release years rather than universal launch days; dates differed by region. This is a practical video-game list, not an inventory of every mobile, arcade, pachislot or cancelled project.
- Silent Hill (1999)
- Silent Hill 2 (2001)
- Silent Hill 3 (2003)
- Silent Hill 4: The Room (2004)
- Silent Hill: Origins (2007)
- Silent Hill: Homecoming (2008)
- Silent Hill: Shattered Memories (2009)
- Silent Hill: Downpour (2012)
- Silent Hill: Book of Memories (2012)
- Silent Hill: The Short Message (2024)
- Silent Hill 2 (2024 remake)
- Silent Hill f (2025)
- Silent Hill: Townfall (2026)
Silent Hill: Ascension is an interactive streaming series rather than a conventional game, so it is not part of this play-through list. Other cancelled, mobile, arcade and interactive-media projects likewise do not need to be inserted between the games above.
Why release order works
The first four releases establish the series’ original design language and recurring ideas before the later games branch into different protagonists, settings and mechanics. Playing them in order also lets you encounter the 2001 Silent Hill 2 before its 2024 remake, making the remake’s changes easier to understand. The later entries can then be approached as expansions of the catalogue rather than homework required to understand the first story.
Release order also protects the original games’ intended surprises. Origins may be set earlier in the fiction, but it was made after the first three games and can assume that players already understand Silent Hill’s imagery and mythology. Likewise, the remake is most useful as a comparison once you know what the 2001 version was doing, rather than as a replacement that erases the series’ publication history.
A story-first route for the connected original arc
If you want the most direct narrative through-line, begin with Origins, continue to Silent Hill, and finish that arc with Silent Hill 3.
- Silent Hill: Origins — a prequel placed before the original in the commonly cited event chronology.
- Silent Hill — the first released game and the foundation for the central storyline.
- Silent Hill 3 — the direct story follow-up to Silent Hill.
After that arc, play Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill 4: The Room in release order. Their protagonists and plots are distinct from the original-to-third-game sequence. A guidebook-derived chronology places Silent Hill 2 roughly ten years before Silent Hill 4, but that interval is useful context rather than a requirement, especially because the wider timeline contains contradictions.
Then add Homecoming and Downpour as later series games without trying to force them into a precise numbered timeline. Their links to the classic sequence are limited, and the secondary chronology used by many fans questions how firmly they belong in one continuous canon.

Where the alternate and optional entries go
- Shattered Memories is an alternate-reality reimagining. Play it as a separate interpretation, not as a missing chapter between numbered games.
- Book of Memories is an optional side entry. No established ordering makes it necessary for the original story.
- The Short Message is another optional modern entry. It does not have a documented placement that must precede or follow the classic arc.
- Silent Hill 2 (2024) is a remake of the 2001 game, not a new numbered chapter. Play it after the original for a version comparison, or use it as an accessible alternative if the older release is unavailable.
- Silent Hill f tells a new story with new characters in Japan. Konami describes it as approachable for newcomers, so it can be played independently.
These labels are practical guidance, not a ranking of quality or importance. “Optional” means that no documented story dependency requires the game for the original-to-third-game arc; it does not mean the entry has no value. A player interested in alternate interpretations may prefer Shattered Memories, while someone looking for a new setting may choose Silent Hill f before touching the older catalogue.
Where does Townfall fit?
Townfall belongs after the earlier entries by release date, but its story position is unassigned. Konami released it on September 24, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Steam and the Epic Games Store. It stars Simon Ordell on St. Amelia, a fictional remote Scottish island, and is the first full-length Silent Hill game presented entirely from a first-person perspective.
Konami’s launch information does not identify Townfall as a sequel to Silent Hill 2, a prequel to the 1999 game or a bridge to Silent Hill f. Do not insert it into a fan-made event timeline as though that placement were official. For a release-order run, play it last among the games listed above. For a newcomer, it can be treated as a later entry that does not require knowledge of the original arc.
That makes Townfall easy to place for practical purposes: it is the newest conventional game in this list, but not a confirmed final chapter of the older storyline. You do not need to finish Silent Hill, Silent Hill 2 or Silent Hill f to understand the premise Konami announced for Townfall. Conversely, playing Townfall does not supply a stated explanation for the events of those earlier games.

SILENT HILL: Townfall – The Dock House is an official narrative companion and prequel set on St. Amelia. It appeared in 2000 AD Prog 2500 in announced print and digital editions. It is optional reading: it expands the setting but is neither a substitute for Townfall nor a prerequisite for playing it.
If you collect companion material, read The Dock House as an add-on around Townfall rather than placing it in the main video-game sequence. Its “prequel” description applies to the St. Amelia companion story; it does not establish that Townfall itself is a prequel to any numbered Silent Hill game.
What each game contributes to the order
| Entry | Relationship to the series | Best placement |
|---|---|---|
| Silent Hill: Origins | Prequel to the original in the commonly used event chronology | Before Silent Hill for a chronology-first route; after Silent Hill 4 in release order |
| Silent Hill (1999) | Opening game and foundation of the classic arc | First in release order, or second after Origins |
| Silent Hill 2 (2001) | Separate story with its own protagonist | Release order; before its remake if comparing versions |
| Silent Hill 3 | Direct follow-up to the original | After Silent Hill for the connected story |
| Silent Hill 4: The Room | Distinct protagonist and storyline; relative chronology is guide-derived | After Silent Hill 3 in release order |
| Homecoming | Later series story with limited connection to the classic sequence | After the original four, without forcing a precise timeline slot |
| Shattered Memories | Alternate-reality reimagining | As a separate interpretation |
| Downpour | Later series entry whose classic-canon links are limited | After the earlier releases, without a strict event order |
| Book of Memories | Optional side entry | Any point after the main releases; no required connection is established |
| The Short Message | Optional modern entry | After the 2012 releases in a release-based run |
| Silent Hill 2 (2024) | Remake of the 2001 game | After the original, or as a substitute for it |
| Silent Hill f | New characters and setting in Japan | Independent optional branch; no need to play it before Townfall |
| Townfall | New story on St. Amelia; no official older-series chronology slot announced | After the prior releases by date |
Original Silent Hill and Silent Hill 3: the one essential connection
Silent Hill 3 is the only game in the main early sequence that is explicitly a direct story continuation of the original. If you intend to play only one connected pair, play those two in that order. Origins adds prequel context, but it was released years later and can be saved for afterward without losing the original’s intended reveal structure.

For that reason, a newcomer who wants the shortest meaningful route has two choices. Origins → Silent Hill → Silent Hill 3 follows the reconstructed event sequence. Silent Hill → Silent Hill 3 preserves the original release experience and avoids introducing a later-made prequel before the first game. Both are defensible; the second is preferable if you care about discovering the original game’s information as its first audience did.

Silent Hill 2 and its 2024 remake
The 2001 Silent Hill 2 is a separate story from the original-to-third-game arc. The 2024 version is a remake of that same game, not a sequel. Konami describes changes including an over-the-shoulder camera, expanded areas, revised combat and additional cutscenes.
Two ways to handle the versions
- Preserve release history: play the 2001 game in its release-order position, then play the 2024 remake near the end of the catalogue.
- Choose one accessible version: play the remake instead of the original if you want a modern presentation and do not need to compare adaptations.
Neither version needs to be completed before Silent Hill 3, because Silent Hill 2 has a separate protagonist and plot. If you choose only the remake, label it as your version of Silent Hill 2 rather than counting it as an additional numbered story in the series.
How strict is the Silent Hill timeline?
There is no single official event chronology that cleanly assigns every game. Fan-maintained reference material, drawing on the games and three official Japanese guidebooks, reconstructs a useful order but notes that exact years are not consistently supplied and that contradictions occur.
- The Origins → Silent Hill → Silent Hill 3 relationship is the clearest connected sequence.
- The placement of Silent Hill 2 roughly a decade before Silent Hill 4 comes from a guide-derived chronology, not a requirement stated by the games’ release order.
- Homecoming and Downpour should be treated as later entries with limited classic-series connections rather than fitted into a definitive numbered timeline.
- Shattered Memories deliberately functions as a reimagining, so its alternate reality should not be used to reorder the mainline games.
- Townfall has an announced setting and premise but no official placement among earlier in-world events.
Use chronology as a way to choose an experience, not as a puzzle with one proven answer. Release order reflects the documented publication history; the story-first route highlights the strongest direct connection. A guide-derived date can provide context, but it should not override what the games explicitly establish.
Where Silent Hill f belongs
Silent Hill f is set in Japan and introduces new characters and settings. Konami says it is designed to be enjoyable for newcomers as well as returning players, so it does not need to come before Townfall or any earlier game.
Konami reported that Silent Hill f passed one million global sales within two days of its September 2025 release. That commercial milestone does not change its narrative placement: play it as an independent modern branch whenever you want a new setting. It can sit immediately before Townfall in a modern-release marathon, or serve as a standalone starting point for someone more interested in a fresh cast than in the 1999 storyline.

How long is the series as a whole?
The catalogue is broader than the connected arc. Konami reported more than 17.8 million Silent Hill series copies worldwide by the end of June 2026, counting units shipped, store downloads and subscription services. That figure covers the franchise rather than indicating a required number of games for one storyline.
For the smallest coherent route, choose Origins, Silent Hill and Silent Hill 3. For the historical route, play every conventional game in release order, including the remake and newer entries. Add The Dock House only if you want optional Townfall background. If time is limited, Silent Hill and Silent Hill 3 are the pair with the clearest direct dependency; Silent Hill 2, its remake, Silent Hill f and Townfall can each be approached as separate stories.

A practical decision guide
Choose release order if you want
- To experience the series as audiences originally did.
- To see how mechanics, camera design and storytelling changed across releases.
- To compare the 2001 Silent Hill 2 with its 2024 remake after knowing the original.
- To avoid treating later fan chronology as definitive canon.
- To understand why Origins is considered a prequel even though it appears much later in the catalogue.
Choose the story-first route if you want
- The shortest path through the clearest connected narrative.
- Origins’ prequel context before the original game.
- Silent Hill 3’s direct continuation while its earlier setup is fresh.
- To leave separate-protagonist entries for later without losing the central arc.
Choose an independent entry if you want a modern starting point
- Play the Silent Hill 2 remake for a self-contained story and updated presentation.
- Play Silent Hill f for its new Japanese setting and characters.
- Play Townfall for its St. Amelia setting and first-person format without waiting to complete the older catalogue.
Common order mistakes to avoid
- Do not call Townfall a confirmed sequel to Silent Hill 2. Its launch announcement gives its protagonist, island setting, platforms and first-person format, but not an older-series event date.
- Do not count the remake as Silent Hill 13. It is a new version of the 2001 Silent Hill 2, with expanded areas, revised combat, an over-the-shoulder view and additional cutscenes.
- Do not place Shattered Memories inside the numbered continuity. It is an alternate-reality reimagining.
- Do not treat every later game as required homework. Homecoming, Downpour, Book of Memories and The Short Message have no documented need to precede the original-to-third-game arc.
- Do not confuse a release year with one worldwide launch day. Regional release schedules varied, so the year-based list is the reliable high-level order.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently Asked Questions
What order should I play the Silent Hill games in?
For a complete first run, use release order: Silent Hill (1999), Silent Hill 2 (2001), Silent Hill 3 (2003), Silent Hill 4: The Room (2004), Origins (2007), Homecoming (2008), Shattered Memories (2009), Downpour (2012), Book of Memories (2012), The Short Message (2024), the Silent Hill 2 remake (2024), Silent Hill f (2025) and Townfall (2026).
What is the shortest story-focused order?
Play Origins, then Silent Hill, then Silent Hill 3. Origins is a prequel, and Silent Hill 3 is the direct follow-up to the original. You can add Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill 4 afterward because their protagonists and plots are distinct.
Where does Townfall fit?
Put Townfall after the earlier games by release date. It launched on September 24, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Steam and the Epic Games Store, but Konami has not assigned it a place in the older games’ event chronology. It is not established as a sequel to Silent Hill 2, a prequel to the 1999 game or a bridge to Silent Hill f.
Do I need to play the older games before Townfall?
No documented story dependency requires that. Townfall stars Simon Ordell and takes place on the fictional Scottish island of St. Amelia. It can be played as a later standalone-feeling entry, although release-order players may prefer to save it for last.

Is Silent Hill 3 a direct sequel?
Yes. Among the early main games, Silent Hill 3 is the direct story continuation of Silent Hill. Play the original first if you want that connection to land as intended.
Is Silent Hill: Origins required?
No. It is a prequel in the commonly used event chronology, so it can open a chronology-first route, but release-order players should experience it after Silent Hill 4. You can also skip it without losing the core original-to-third-game arc.
Are Homecoming and Downpour part of one strict timeline?
They are later series entries, but their links to the classic sequence are limited and a secondary chronology questions how firmly they fit one continuous canon. Play them after the early games without assigning them a precise event date.
Where do Shattered Memories, Book of Memories and The Short Message go?
Treat Shattered Memories as a separate alternate-reality reimagining. Book of Memories and The Short Message are optional side entries with no established order required for the classic arc. In a release run, place them in their listed 2009, 2012 and 2024 positions.
Do I have to play Silent Hill f before Townfall?
No. Silent Hill f is a new story with new characters and a Japanese setting, and Konami describes it as welcoming to newcomers. Its September 2025 release makes it earlier than Townfall chronologically as a publication, but it is not a required story bridge.
What is The Dock House?
SILENT HILL: Townfall – The Dock House is an official narrative companion and prequel set on St. Amelia. It appeared in 2000 AD Prog 2500 in announced print and digital editions. It is optional reading, not a replacement for Townfall or a prerequisite.
Is Silent Hill: Ascension part of the game order?
Ascension is an interactive streaming series rather than a conventional video game, so it is excluded from the practical game play-through list.

The Bottom Line
Choose release order for the fullest history: Silent Hill (1999) through Townfall (2026), with the 2024 Silent Hill 2 remake treated as a remake rather than a new numbered chapter. Choose Origins → Silent Hill → Silent Hill 3 for the clearest connected story. Townfall is available on PS5, Steam and Epic Games Store, but its older-series chronology remains unassigned; play it as a later, optional-feeling entry, not as a required sequel.
