To play Soulstonia – Demo on a Steam Deck, find the official Steam listing (app 4448060), install it in Game Mode, and launch it. The listing specifies Windows and macOS support but does not list a native Linux or SteamOS build, so Steam Deck users should be prepared to run it through Proton. If it will not start, use the per-game compatibility override in Steam. Touchscreen or trackpad input may also be useful because SteamDB metadata flags mouse-only and touch-only options.

What you need before installing

You need a Steam Deck with SteamOS, an internet connection for the initial download, and enough free storage for the demo. The Steam store lists 500 MB of minimum Windows storage. That figure is a Windows requirement, not a guarantee that the complete Steam Deck installation, shader cache, Proton files, or future updates will use exactly 500 MB, so leave additional space available.

The demo is published by Gabriel’s Games. Its store page identifies Windows 10/11 and macOS 14 requirements, with 8 GB of minimum memory. No native Linux or SteamOS build is documented in those published requirements. That distinction matters: installing the game on a Deck is possible through Steam Play/Proton, but the available information does not establish that every feature works perfectly on every SteamOS release.

Item Published information What it means on Deck
Steam app Soulstonia – Demo, app 4448060 Use the official demo listing rather than a similarly named entry.
Operating systems listed Windows 10/11 and macOS 14 No native Linux/SteamOS build is stated; Proton is the practical route.
Minimum memory 8 GB The listing does not publish a separate Deck requirement.
Minimum Windows storage 500 MB Keep extra space for compatibility files and updates.
Deck Verified status Not established in the available official information Treat the result as a Proton configuration, not as a confirmed Verified experience.

Install the demo in Steam Deck Game Mode

  1. Turn on the Deck and open Steam in Game Mode.

  2. Use Search and enter Soulstonia – Demo. Confirm that the listing is the official demo from Gabriel’s Games and that the app is the demo, not a different title or a community shortcut.

A first launch can take longer than later launches while Steam prepares Proton components. If the game opens normally, you can begin playing without changing any settings. If it returns immediately to the Library, shows a blank window, or becomes unresponsive, apply the compatibility procedure below.

Force Proton when the default launch fails

Steam Support’s per-game procedure lets you select a Steam Play compatibility tool without changing the setting for every game. This is the appropriate first workaround because the store listing does not advertise a native SteamOS version.

  1. In Game Mode, highlight Soulstonia – Demo in your Library.

  2. Open the game’s Menu and choose Properties.

  3. Select Compatibility.

  4. Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.

  5. Choose the latest Proton release that Steam presents as recommended or current for your Deck.

  6. Close Properties and launch the demo again.

Do not assume that a particular Proton version is permanently best. SteamOS and Proton are updated independently, and a version that works on one Deck may behave differently after an update. Start with the current release offered by Steam, then test another installed Proton version only if the current one fails. Change one setting at a time so you can identify which configuration helped.

Set up controls for menus and interactions

The available SteamDB metadata records mouse-only and touch-only options for the demo. That is an input warning, not proof of a complete controller-compatible layout or a hands-on test of every action. Some screens may respond more naturally to a pointer than to the Deck’s buttons.

Use the touchscreen

Tap buttons, inventory slots, map elements, or other controls that do not respond to the standard gamepad layout. If a tap selects an item but does not activate it, try a second tap or the Deck’s confirm button; the correct behavior can vary by screen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a trackpad as a mouse

Move a thumb across a trackpad to position the pointer, then click the trackpad or the mapped trigger to select. This is often more precise for small interface elements than attempting to move a cursor with an analog stick.

Create or adjust a Steam Input layout

Open the controller-layout editor from the demo’s controller settings and assign mouse movement, left click, right click, or keyboard keys to buttons and trackpads as needed. Keep a simple layout first: pointer movement on a trackpad, primary click on a trigger, and an easily reachable button for cancel or back. Add extra bindings only after you know which actions the demo actually exposes.

If the game appears to ignore a button, check whether the active layout is a gamepad template while the game is waiting for mouse or keyboard input. Switching to a layout that sends mouse or keyboard events can resolve that mismatch. Because the metadata only signals mouse- and touch-oriented options, avoid treating any community layout as an official guarantee.

What the Soulstonia demo includes

The demo is presented as a single-player cozy fantasy RPG. Its systems combine direct control with goals that can continue while you are not constantly issuing commands. The store description lists gathering, crafting, combat, exploration, and creature summoning.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Gabriel’s Games states that the demo is not a short, time-limited trial. It has no playtime cap and no progression cap, so you can continue exploring, training, crafting, fighting, and building your Summoners for as long as you want. “No cap” describes the published demo policy; it does not mean that every area or feature planned for the finished game is already available.

Published demo content Figure or scope
Regions All five regions are open.
Trainable skills More than 20 skills can be trained to level 99.
Quests More than 15 quests are available in Act I.
Progression and playtime No playtime cap and no progression cap are stated.

These figures are the developer’s published 2026 figures. They describe the scope advertised for the demo, not a promise that a Deck will render every scene at a particular frame rate or that all systems will be convenient with gamepad-only input.

Graphics and performance expectations

No official Steam Deck performance result, frame-rate measurement, battery test, or graphics preset recommendation is established here. Do not interpret the Windows or macOS requirements as a Deck benchmark. Proton can introduce behavior that is not visible in the original operating-system requirements, and the Deck’s result can change with SteamOS, Proton, driver, and game updates.

If the demo launches but feels unstable or performs poorly, first confirm that SteamOS is current and restart the Deck. Then open the game’s graphics settings and reduce demanding options as Steam Support recommends. Apply changes one at a time and test the same scene or activity after each change. This gives you a usable baseline without claiming a fixed frame rate.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The demo will not start

  • Confirm that you installed Soulstonia – Demo, not a non-Steam copy or an unrelated shortcut.
  • Restart the Deck, then try launching again.
  • Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool under Library > game > Menu > Properties > Compatibility.
  • Select the latest Proton release Steam recommends and retry.
  • If that fails, test another Proton version already offered in the selector, changing only the Proton choice between attempts.

The game opens, then closes or freezes

  • Install pending SteamOS and game updates, then restart.
  • Try the Proton override if you were using the default setting, or remove the override if the problem began immediately after forcing one.
  • Lower graphics settings and retest.
  • Make sure the Deck has free storage beyond the published 500 MB Windows minimum so Steam can maintain compatibility data and updates.

The menu will not respond to buttons

  • Try the touchscreen first.
  • Use a trackpad as a mouse and click the interface element directly.
  • Open Steam Input and select or create a layout that sends mouse or keyboard events rather than only gamepad events.
  • Check whether the active layout changed after a restart or an update.

The pointer moves but clicks do not register

  • Try a different click binding in Steam Input, such as a trigger or trackpad press.
  • Test the touchscreen to distinguish an input-layout problem from a game-window problem.
  • Reopen the demo after changing the layout; some games read input mode only at launch.

Is Soulstonia officially Steam Deck Verified?

An official Deck Verified rating for this demo is not established by the available information. Steam’s compatibility labels are Verified, Playable, Unsupported, and Unknown. A Proton launch that works on your Deck is a practical success, but it is not the same thing as an official Verified designation.

Input metadata that mentions mouse-only or touch-only options should also temper expectations about a seamless controller experience. You may be able to play the complete demo with a touchscreen, trackpad, or custom Steam Input layout, while another player may encounter a different interaction problem after an update. Report the exact SteamOS and Proton configuration when comparing results with other players.

Valve Steam Deck 1TB Upgraded Handheld Gaming Console with Carring case, 1280 x 800 OLED Display Silicone Soft Cover Protector & Joystic Cap & Tempered Glass Film Bundle
  • Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
  • Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
  • Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
  • Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
  • The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.

A repeatable setup to try first

For the least confusing first test, use this sequence:

  1. Update SteamOS and restart the Deck.

  2. Install the official Soulstonia – Demo listing, app 4448060.

  3. Launch once with Steam’s default compatibility setting.

  4. If it fails, force the latest Proton release recommended by Steam in the game’s Compatibility properties.

  5. Launch again and test a menu, an interaction, and a short section of gameplay.

  6. If controls are awkward, use the touchscreen or trackpad and create a minimal Steam Input layout.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  7. If performance is poor, lower graphics settings and retest after restarting the game.

This process separates three different issues—launch compatibility, pointer-oriented controls, and graphics performance—rather than treating them as one problem. It also avoids promising a result that the published requirements and metadata do not establish.

What is confirmed and what remains uncertain

Question Answer supported by published information
Can the demo be installed from Steam? Yes. The official Steam listing is Soulstonia – Demo, app 4448060.
Is there a native SteamOS build? None is documented; the listed systems are Windows 10/11 and macOS 14.
Is Proton the practical Deck method? Yes, because Steam Play/Proton provides the compatibility path for a Windows listing.
Is a specific Proton version guaranteed? No. Use the latest version Steam recommends, then test alternatives if needed.
Does every control work with buttons alone? Not established. SteamDB metadata flags mouse-only and touch-only options.
Is the demo Deck Verified? No official rating is established in the available information.
Does it have a time limit? The developer states there is no playtime or progression cap.
Is a fixed frame rate or battery life known? No official Deck performance measurement is established.

The safest conclusion is that the demo is worth trying on Deck through Proton, with pointer input available as a fallback. Expect to configure compatibility and controls yourself rather than relying on a confirmed native build or Verified certification.
