How to play the System Shock games in order, including the remake

By VGSources Team 10 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a first playthrough, play System Shock (remake) first, then System Shock 2—preferably its current 25th Anniversary Remaster where available. The remake retells the first System Shock; it is not a prequel or a new chapter between the original and System Shock 2. If you want the historical experience, play System Shock (1994), ideally the Enhanced Edition, then System Shock 2, and finally the remake to compare how the same first-game story was reinterpreted.

The correct System Shock order at a glance

Order Game or edition What it is Who should choose it
1 System Shock (remake) A full modern remake of the 1994 first game Most newcomers
2 System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster An updated edition of the separate sequel Players continuing after the remake
Alternative 1 System Shock (1994) or Enhanced Edition The original first game, with the Enhanced Edition adding modern controls and presentation options Players interested in design history
Alternative 2 System Shock 2 (1999) or its 25th Anniversary Remaster The sequel set aboard the Von Braun Players following either version of the first game
Optional final step System Shock (remake) A second interpretation of the first game’s story Players who began with the 1994 version and want to compare both versions

The release sequence was System Shock (1994), System Shock 2 (1999), and then System Shock (remake). That release history is different from the most convenient first-playthrough order because the remake revisits the first game rather than advancing the series narrative.

What each System Shock release represents

System Shock (1994)

Looking Glass Studios developed the original System Shock, which Origin Systems released for PC in 1994. It establishes the setting, the artificial intelligence SHODAN, and the first game’s systems-driven approach to exploration and problem solving. Its interface and controls reflect mid-1990s PC design, so it can feel substantially less immediate than later versions.

System Shock: Enhanced Edition

The Enhanced Edition is not a second story chapter. It is a modernized release of the 1994 game. Nightdive describes higher-resolution support, mouselook, remappable controls, and a switch between Enhanced and Classic presentations. Choose it when you want the original game’s content and structure with more usable controls. The Classic option lets you see the older presentation without buying or starting another game.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

System Shock 2 (1999)

System Shock 2 is the actual sequel. Its protagonist awakens from cryo sleep aboard the Von Braun while the ship is being overrun. The sequel expands the formula with role-playing systems that are more prominent than in the first game, including military branches, skills, weapons, and psionic powers. It follows the first System Shock in the straightforward story order.

System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster

The 25th Anniversary Remaster updates System Shock 2’s presentation and is still the sequel, not a new entry. Nightdive lists cross-play co-op and mod support among its features. If the remaster is available on your platform, it is the natural modern edition to select when you reach the second game. Its placement does not change: it comes after either version of the first System Shock.

System Shock (remake)

The remake rebuilds the 1994 game with modernized visuals, controls, interface, music, and sound. It tells the first System Shock story again rather than continuing beyond System Shock 2. PlayStation lists its PS4 and PS5 release date as May 21, 2024. Starting here gives a new player the clearest route into the setting without requiring familiarity with the older interface.

Recommended order for a first playthrough

1. Start with System Shock (remake)

Use the remake as your entry point if you want contemporary controls and presentation. You will encounter the foundational setting and conflict in a form designed for current hardware, while avoiding the need to learn the 1994 interface before you know whether the series suits you.

2. Continue with System Shock 2

After finishing the remake, move to System Shock 2. This is where the series’ sequel storyline and more explicit RPG structure begin. Select the 25th Anniversary Remaster when it is available for your target platform; otherwise, the original System Shock 2 remains the correct second game.

3. Do not insert the 1994 game between them

The original and Enhanced Edition are alternate ways to play the first game you have already completed in remake form. They are valuable for comparison, preservation, or curiosity, but they are not required connective chapters between the remake and System Shock 2.

  1. System Shock (1994), preferably Enhanced Edition. The Enhanced Edition keeps the original game while adding higher-resolution support, mouselook, remappable controls, and a Classic presentation switch.
  2. System Shock 2 (1999) or the 25th Anniversary Remaster. This is the direct sequel and introduces the Von Braun, cryo-awakening premise, military branches, skills, weapons, and psionic powers.
  3. System Shock (remake), optionally. Return to the first game’s story through its modern reinterpretation. This final step is for comparison, not narrative necessity.

Playing both versions of the first game is optional. The two releases represent the same broad story, so completing both will involve revisiting familiar locations and events rather than unlocking an additional sequel chapter.

Should you play the remake or the original first?

Your priority Best first choice Reason
Modern controls and interface System Shock (remake) It rebuilds visuals, controls, interface, music, and sound for a contemporary experience.
Historical fidelity System Shock: Enhanced Edition It preserves the original game while adding usability features and retaining a Classic option.
Seeing the 1994 game exactly as a period design Enhanced Edition with Classic presentation You can use the updated release while switching to its Classic presentation.
Comparing old and new interpretations Enhanced Edition, then remake Both cover the first game’s role in the series, making design changes easier to identify.

There is no story penalty for choosing the remake first. The practical recommendation is based on usability, not an official requirement from the developers. If older interfaces are part of the appeal for you, begin with the Enhanced Edition instead.

How the two System Shock 2 editions differ

Edition Core content Noted features Best use
System Shock 2 (1999) The original sequel Original presentation and systems Preservation, historical comparison, or access where the remaster is unavailable
System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster The same sequel Updated presentation; Nightdive lists cross-play co-op and mod support Most players choosing a current edition

Neither edition changes the sequel’s position after the first game. Check the current store description for the platform you intend to use, because availability can differ by region and storefront.

A practical playthrough plan

Plan A: The simplest modern route

  1. Install System Shock (remake) on a supported platform.
  2. Finish the first game’s campaign and keep your save or completion record separate from any older release; the remake and 1994 game are different products.
  3. Install System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster if your platform offers it.
  4. Begin the sequel as a new campaign. Expect a stronger focus on character development, skills, weapons, military branches, and psionic powers.

Plan B: The historical route

  1. Install System Shock: Enhanced Edition.
  2. Use its remappable controls and mouselook if you want the original game without period-accurate input limitations.
  3. Switch to the Classic presentation when you want to examine the older visual and interface style.
  4. Play System Shock 2 or its 25th Anniversary Remaster.
  5. Play the remake afterward only if you want a direct comparison with the original first game.

Plan C: A comparison-focused route

  1. Play the Enhanced Edition first and note how navigation, interface, audio, and environmental interaction communicate information.
  2. Play System Shock 2 to experience the series’ next step as a sequel rather than immediately replacing your memory of the first game with the remake.
  3. Finish with the remake and compare its modern visual, control, interface, music, and sound decisions with the 1994 design.

Why System Shock 2 belongs after the first game

System Shock 2 is not an alternate campaign or an expansion for the first System Shock. It is a separate follow-up with a new protagonist and a different starting situation aboard the Von Braun. The sequel assumes that the series has already established its central conflict and then develops it through character progression and shipboard survival.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction matters when storefronts list several similarly named products. A remaster can look like a new release, but the 25th Anniversary title updates System Shock 2 rather than adding a fifth story entry. Likewise, the first game’s Enhanced Edition updates the 1994 release rather than creating a bridge between it and the sequel.

Platform and storefront considerations

Edition availability is not uniform. Nightdive lists the Enhanced Edition on Steam, Humble Bundle, and GOG. PlayStation identifies the remake for PS4 and PS5 and gives May 21, 2024 as its release date. Other platform listings can change, and a version available on PC may not be available on a particular console.

  • Check the exact title before purchasing: “Enhanced Edition” means the first game, while “25th Anniversary Remaster” means System Shock 2.
  • Verify the platform generation and region in the current store listing.
  • Do not assume that owning one edition automatically grants another edition or a console version.
  • For the sequel remaster, confirm whether the features you want—especially cross-play co-op or mod support—are supported on your chosen platform.

These checks are especially important when a store search returns the original, an Enhanced Edition, a remake, and a remaster together.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Mistake: treating the remake as System Shock 3

Fix: Place it in the first game’s slot. It is a remake of System Shock (1994), not a sequel to System Shock 2.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mistake: assuming the Enhanced Edition is a separate entry

Fix: Treat it as the 1994 game with updated usability. You do not need to play both the original PC release and Enhanced Edition to understand the first story.

Mistake: putting the 25th Anniversary Remaster before the first game

Fix: The anniversary label refers to the updated edition of System Shock 2. Play it after the first game, whether that first game was the remake or the 1994 release.

Mistake: expecting identical systems across the first game and sequel

Fix: Allow for a change in emphasis. System Shock 2 adds explicit military branches, skills, weapons, and psionic powers, so character-building decisions become a more visible part of play.

Is it worth playing both versions of the first game?

Play both only if you enjoy historical comparison, game design, or seeing how a remake interprets the same material. The Enhanced Edition is the efficient way to sample the original because it combines the 1994 game with modern usability features and a Classic presentation option. The remake is the better choice when your priority is current presentation and controls.

For most players, repeating the first game is unnecessary. The efficient route is remake to System Shock 2; the preservation route is Enhanced Edition to System Shock 2; the comparison route adds the remake after both.

Optional companion: The Art of System Shock

The Art of System Shock is a full-color hardcover book about the remake. It is an optional visual companion and has no role in the play order, installation process, or story sequence. Consider it only if you want behind-the-scenes artwork alongside the remake; it is not required reading for either game.

Is the Enhanced Edition required before the remake?

No. It is an alternative version of the first game. Choose it instead of the remake for historical fidelity, or play it afterward for comparison.

Does co-op change the sequel’s place in the order?

No. Cross-play co-op is listed as a feature of the 25th Anniversary Remaster, but the remaster remains the second game’s updated edition and still follows the first System Shock.

Which first-game version is best for a replay?

Use the Enhanced Edition if you want to revisit the original structure with remappable controls, mouselook, and the option to switch between Enhanced and Classic presentations. Use the remake if you want its rebuilt visuals, interface, music, and sound again.
