You can play a free, official sample of UNDERTALE on Windows or Mac, but it is an older demo—not the complete game. The official demo page says its save will not transfer to the full version. Official sources list the full game separately for purchase on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation and Xbox, with subscription access depending on platform, region and current store terms.
How to get the official free UNDERTALE demo
- Open the official UNDERTALE demo page.
- Choose the Windows or Mac download and follow the instructions for your computer.
- Launch the demo to try a limited sample of the game.
The official page calls it “the old DEMO for UNDERTALE” and notes that it was made with older software, so it may not fully represent the finished game. Demo progress does not transfer to the full game.

Can you play the full game for free?
The official sources reviewed list a free demo and separate full-game editions; they do not list a free download of the complete game. If you want the full experience, use an official purchase or check whether your platform currently includes it in a subscription catalogue.
Official ways to access the full game
| Route | What it offers | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Official PC/Mac purchase | Digital download; the official help page says buyers receive a download link by email and do not need Steam to play it. | Check the official help page for purchase and download details. |
| Steam | Paid PC listing. | Price and availability can change; check the Steam listing. |
| PlayStation Store | PS4 listing. The US store page currently shows catalogue access with PlayStation Plus Extra. | Catalogue access is not universal. Confirm availability and subscription terms in your local PlayStation Store. |
| Xbox Store | Purchase listing and cloud-play information. | The US listing says purchase is required while noting cloud play with some Game Pass plans. Check your region and plan on the Xbox Store. |
| Nintendo Switch | The official site lists digital and physical editions. | Availability and pricing vary by region; see the official UNDERTALE site and your local Nintendo store. |
Is a subscription a free way to play?
It can be an alternative to buying the game outright when a current subscription catalogue includes it, but access depends on the platform, region, plan and catalogue status. For example, the US PlayStation Store listing shows PlayStation Plus Extra catalogue access; the US Xbox listing describes cloud play with some Game Pass plans and also says purchase is required. Check the terms shown by your own store before subscribing or assuming you can play.
