Unrated generally avoids Competitive’s rank checks; Competitive can reject a party because of rank disparity, party size, account eligibility, or an active restriction. When that happens, the warning shown in the live client is more reliable than old guides because Riot changes these rules by patch, region, and queue.
How do I play VALORANT with friends?
The basic process is the same whether you plan to play an unranked or ranked match:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Open the Social panel. Find the friend who is online and available. If they are not already listed, use the client’s friend-adding control and enter the identifier they use in VALORANT.
- Invite the friend to your party. Use the friend’s context menu and choose the party-invite option. They must accept before they become part of your group.
- Check the party roster. Confirm that every intended player appears in the same party and that nobody is still in another party or match.
- Choose a mode. The party leader selects Unrated, Competitive, or another available queue from the Play screen.
- Queue as leader. The party leader starts matchmaking. Everyone should remain in the party and ready while the client checks eligibility.
If a friend cannot be invited, or the queue button produces a warning, read that message before changing anything. It usually identifies whether the problem is a party-size rule, a Competitive eligibility rule, a connection or availability state, or an account restriction.
The invitation and the queue check are separate steps. A friend can accept an invitation and appear in your roster, yet still be unable to enter Competitive with that group. Conversely, a player who cannot join Competitive may still be able to join an Unrated party. Treat the mode you select as the point at which the relevant rules are applied.

What to check before you queue
- Everyone is showing as online and is not already in a match, custom game, or different party.
- The intended party leader is the person actually starting the queue.
- Each player has finished any required account, tutorial, or mode access steps shown by the client.
- No one has an active restriction that blocks the selected mode.
- For Competitive, the current party-size and rank-disparity message allows the exact group you assembled.
- Players understand that a Competitive win or loss affects Competitive Rating (RR), while an Unrated result does not use Competitive RR.
These checks matter because being friends in the Social panel does not guarantee that the same group is eligible for every queue. A roster can also change while someone accepts an invite, leaves a match, or reconnects, so verify the names and statuses immediately before the leader presses the queue button.
Unrated and Competitive are different queues
| Question | Unrated | Competitive |
|---|---|---|
| Ranked or unranked? | Unranked. | Ranked. |
| Can rank disparity stop the party? | Competitive rank restrictions do not apply to the Unrated queue. | Yes. The client can apply rank- and party-based eligibility checks. |
| Does party size matter? | The queue can still have its own party or matchmaking rules, but the supplied official material does not establish a universal current limit. | Yes. The applicable limits have changed over time and must be confirmed in the live client. |
| Does account or mode access matter? | Any account or access requirement displayed by the client still applies. | Any account or access requirement displayed by the client still applies, in addition to Competitive checks. |
| Does a win or loss change Competitive RR? | No Competitive RR is awarded or removed for an Unrated result. | Yes, although a wide-rank party can receive special RR treatment under the rules in force. |
| What should you expect? | A straightforward option when the group wants to play together without ranked eligibility checks. | Potential warnings, longer matchmaking, or altered RR treatment when the party spans a wide skill range. |
Do not assume that a group accepted in Unrated will also be accepted in Competitive. Competitive evaluates the party again when you select or start that queue. The practical choice is simple: use Unrated when playing together is the priority and use Competitive when everyone accepts the possibility of rank checks, a longer wait, and different RR treatment.
How Competitive rank restrictions work
Riot has changed Competitive party rules several times. Exact rank caps, permitted party sizes, queue-time behavior, and RR adjustments are therefore volatile. The current warning in the VALORANT client should be treated as the controlling answer for your region and patch.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Competitive eligibility is not determined only by whether two players are friends or whether both have a visible rank. The client considers the complete party you are trying to queue: its size, the ranks represented, and any account or mode restrictions. Changing one player can change the result, which is why a smaller test party can be useful for diagnosis but does not prove that the original full group is eligible.
Different ranks can sometimes play together
A party with different ranks is not automatically impossible. Whether it can queue depends on the current Competitive rules, the number of people in the party, and how far apart the relevant ranks are. A group that is accepted may still receive a notice about increased queue time or modified RR. A group that is outside the current limits will be prevented from starting Competitive, even though the players can remain friends and play another mode together.
When the client permits the party, read the entire notice rather than stopping at the green or enabled queue button. The message may explain that matchmaking takes longer or that the result receives special RR treatment. Those conditions are part of the decision to queue, not an error that can be ignored after matchmaking begins.
Why old “three-tier” advice can be misleading
Riot’s Patch 1.10 notes from October 13, 2020 recorded a three-tier cap on Competitive rank disparity, reduced from six tiers, and described tighter matchmaking intended to reduce skill disparity. That was a patch-era rule, not a permanent promise.
Later, Riot’s Patch 3.10 announcement from November 16, 2021 described a special treatment for five-stacks. It said: “We’re removing all ranked restrictions from 5-stack parties in Competitive Queue.” The same announcement warned that broad-rank five-stacks could face longer queues and reduced RR, and said four-stacks were being removed from Competitive at that time. Those statements explain how the system worked in that patch; they do not establish the rules in the current client.
This timeline explains why two players can quote apparently contradictory rules. Patch 1.10 documented one general disparity limit, while Patch 3.10 later documented an exception for a specific five-player composition. They should not be merged into a single permanent rule. If a current warning conflicts with an old guide, follow the warning and then check the latest Riot information for your region.
What the historical five-stack rules said about RR
Patch 3.10 described RR reductions for five-stacks based on rank disparity. Its examples included at least a 50% reduction for groups containing Diamond 3 or higher and at least a 75% reduction for groups containing Radiant; the notes also gave a 90% reduction example under the stated conditions. These are historical figures from Riot’s 2021 announcement, not current percentages. Do not calculate expected RR from them unless a current Riot rule or the in-client warning gives the same figures for your party.
A reduction affects both the reward for a win and the loss treatment described by the applicable system, so the party should discuss the warning before queuing. The important point is not memorizing an old percentage; it is recognizing that a permitted wide-rank five-stack may not receive ordinary Competitive progression.

Can a five-stack queue ranked together?
It has been possible under some Riot rule sets, but the answer is not permanently “yes” or “no.” The historical Patch 3.10 change explicitly allowed five-stacks across ranks under conditions while trading away normal matchmaking and RR treatment. Later patches may have changed the details. Assemble the five players, select Competitive, and read the eligibility notice. If the client accepts the queue, it will also show any warning about queue time or RR; if it refuses, the message tells you which requirement is not met.
A five-stack is not the same as a four-stack plus a solo player in the matchmaking system. Riot’s 2021 notes specifically said four-stacks were removed from Competitive at that time. Because that was a dated change, do not infer the present rule from the old statement; check the current party composition warning.
If one player leaves a five-stack, stop and recheck the warning before queuing again. The party has changed categories, and a rule that applied to five players may not apply to four. Likewise, adding a fifth player can remove one restriction while introducing a queue-time or RR notice. The composition shown in the client is the composition that matters.
Why can’t my friend join my Competitive party?
Work through these causes in order. Stop when the client’s message identifies the issue.

Ask the friend to return to the main screen, leave any existing party, and confirm that their status is online. A player who is loading, already queued, disconnected, or in another match may appear in the Social panel but still be unable to accept or remain in a party.
2. The party is using the wrong queue
Try forming the same group in Unrated. If the invitation works there but Competitive refuses the party, the problem is probably a ranked eligibility rule rather than the friendship link or the invite itself.
3. Rank disparity or party size is outside the live rule
Have the party leader select Competitive and read the exact warning. Remove one player temporarily or test a smaller group only as a diagnostic; do not assume that the resulting group proves what the full party is allowed to do. If the group spans a wide range, expect the possibility of a longer queue or altered RR even when the client allows it.
Record the exact wording before making several changes at once. If you remove a player, change modes, and restart simultaneously, you may fix the symptom without learning which condition caused it. Restore the intended roster afterward and test the complete party again.
4. The account has a restriction
Open the affected player’s notice and identify whether it blocks communication only, a particular game mode, or matchmaking itself. Riot’s Player Support information on communication restrictions and voice retention explains that penalties can include game-mode restrictions. A voice restriction alone should not be assumed to block every queue; follow the restriction notice and the support page for your region.
Do not ask another player to bypass a restriction by repeatedly reinviting them. The notice, not the party roster, determines what the account may enter. If the message names a game-mode restriction, wait for the stated period or use the support route provided by Riot.
5. The client state is stale
Have everyone leave and rejoin the party, then restart the client if the roster or warning does not update. Re-invite the friend after they are back at the main screen. If the same restriction message persists, preserve its wording and use the relevant Riot support channel rather than guessing at a rank rule.

How matchmaking treats groups of different sizes
Party size affects the opponents and premade groups that matchmaking can consider. Riot’s May 13, 2020 ranked explainer, “04: On Peeker’s Advantage & Ranked,” said that premade groups of different sizes were supported and that matchmaking for solo players and smaller groups would favor similar premade sizes. That is a historical explanation of the design, not a guarantee that today’s algorithm behaves identically.
Recommended Free Tools
In practical terms, queue as a complete party when possible, and expect the wait to be less predictable when the group has a very wide skill range or an unusual party size. A longer wait is not necessarily a connection failure; it can be the trade-off for finding an eligible match under the current rules.
Do not compare a solo queue result with a five-player queue and assume the difference proves a bug. The matchmaking system can consider premade size and the rules attached to that composition. If the party warning explicitly mentions a longer search, allow additional time before repeatedly cancelling and restarting.
How RR changes the decision to play ranked with friends
Competitive lets friends share ranked games, but the cost of a wide-rank party is not limited to waiting. Riot’s historical five-stack rules tied rank disparity to reduced RR outcomes. The exact reduction, threshold, and whether the rule applies to your queue are patch-dependent.
- Use the client’s warning as the authoritative estimate for the party you built.
- Do not apply a percentage from an old video, guide, or Patch 3.10 summary to a current match.
- If preserving normal RR is more important than playing as one group, use a party composition the client treats as standard or select Unrated.
- Tell every player before queueing that acceptance does not guarantee normal queue time or normal RR.
This is especially important when players have different goals. One friend may want a relaxed group game, while another may be protecting a rank or trying to maximize RR. Agree on that priority before inviting the final player, then choose Unrated or Competitive accordingly.

- Plan the group. Decide whether the priority is playing together or earning normal Competitive RR.
- Build the party in the Social panel. Invite only players who are online and ready to queue.
- Test the least restrictive option first. If the goal is simply to play together, Unrated avoids Competitive rank eligibility checks.
- For Competitive, select the queue before everyone commits. Read the rank, party-size, queue-time, and RR message shown by the client.
- Accept only when everyone understands the notice. A five-stack or wide-rank group may be allowed while receiving different matchmaking or RR treatment.
- If blocked, change one variable at a time. Check availability, restrictions, party size, and mode in that order so you can identify the cause.
After a completed match, return to the party screen before changing modes. Confirm that everyone is still present, because a disconnect or automatic return to another screen can make the next invitation appear to fail when the actual issue is simply that the roster changed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What you can and cannot conclude from old guides
- A guide quoting a three-tier limit is describing Riot’s Patch 1.10-era rule, not necessarily today’s cap.
- A guide saying that all five-stacks are unrestricted is repeating the Patch 3.10 announcement, not proving that the same exception remains active.
- A quoted 50%, 75%, or 90% RR reduction belongs to the conditions Riot described in 2021; it is not a universal current penalty.
- A claim that four-stacks are always forbidden likewise needs a current in-client confirmation.
Use historical notes to understand why players report different experiences, but use the live eligibility message to decide what your party can do now. Patch notes are useful context, yet they cannot override a warning generated for the current account, region, party composition, and queue.
Quick answers
Can friends with different ranks play VALORANT together?
Yes, potentially. Unrated does not use Competitive rank eligibility, while Competitive may accept or reject the group according to current rank-disparity and party-size rules.
Does inviting someone guarantee they can queue?
No. An invitation only places the player in the party. The selected queue performs its own eligibility check.

Will a wide-rank party always lose RR?
No universal current percentage is established here. Historical Riot rules reduced RR for some wide-rank five-stacks, but the live client’s warning and current Riot information control your match.
What should we do if Competitive is blocked?
Check everyone’s availability and restrictions, reread the party warning, adjust party size if appropriate, or play Unrated together. Do not assume an old rank threshold explains the current error.

Why does a five-stack take longer to find a match?
Wide-rank or unusual party compositions can carry a longer matchmaking search under the rules described by Riot. A longer wait can be an eligibility trade-off rather than a connection failure. Read the current notice for the exact party.
Does a voice restriction automatically prevent matchmaking?
Not necessarily. Riot’s support information distinguishes communication penalties from restrictions that can include a game mode. Check the affected account’s notice instead of assuming that a voice restriction blocks every queue.
Should we use a smaller party to bypass a Competitive warning?
Use a smaller group only to diagnose which party composition triggers the message. A smaller party does not prove that the original group is allowed, and changing composition can invoke a different rule.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I invite friends to a VALORANT party?
Open the Social panel, find an online friend, use the friend’s context menu to send a party invite, and wait for acceptance. Confirm the full roster before the party leader selects a mode and queues.
Can different ranks play together in VALORANT?
They can generally play together in Unrated because Competitive rank eligibility checks do not apply there. Competitive may accept or reject the group based on current rank disparity, party size, and other eligibility rules shown in the client.
Can a five-stack queue ranked together?
Some Riot rule sets have allowed five-stacks, including the exception announced in Patch 3.10 on November 16, 2021. Current permissions, queue times, and RR treatment can differ, so select Competitive and follow the live eligibility warning.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy can’t my friend join my Competitive party?
Check that the friend is online, not already in another match or party, and has no account or game-mode restriction. Then read the Competitive warning for rank disparity and party size. If the client state appears stale, have everyone leave, rejoin, and restart before trying again.
Do wide-rank parties lose a fixed amount of RR?
No fixed current percentage should be assumed. Riot’s 2021 historical notes described 50%, 75%, and 90% reductions in specific five-stack conditions, but the live client and current Riot information determine the treatment now.
What is the quickest alternative when Competitive will not let us queue?
Play Unrated together after confirming that everyone is online and eligible for that mode. Unrated avoids Competitive rank-disparity checks, although the client’s ordinary account or access requirements still apply.
The Bottom Line
Form the party in the Social panel, let the leader choose the queue, and treat the live eligibility warning as the authority. Unrated is the dependable choice when friends simply want to play together; Competitive may impose changing rank, party-size, queue-time, restriction, and RR conditions. Historical Riot notes explain why old guides disagree, but only the current client and Riot support information can tell you what your party may do today.
