Vault Hunters is a Minecraft action-RPG modpack built around short, timed dungeon runs. You gather materials in the overworld, craft a vault rock, open a portal, complete an objective in a randomly generated vault, and escape with loot before the timer expires. To play with friends, install the same Vault Hunters 3rd Edition release on Minecraft 1.18.2, run Java 17, allocate about 8 GB of memory to each client, and join a server where everyone can form a party.
Running a modpack with friends? Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks (CurseForge, FTB, Technic) and free DDoS protection.
The simplest route is the CurseForge Launcher. Prism Launcher is a good alternative when you need more control over instances and Java settings. Multiplayer can run on an official server with the required access tier or on a self-hosted server using the supplied files. Before the first vault, agree on difficulty, death penalties, the timer, and whether the server requires every player to belong to the same party.

What you actually do in Vault Hunters
Vault Hunters keeps normal Minecraft’s building, mining, farming, and exploration, then adds a character-progression system and repeatable dungeon expeditions. The overworld is your preparation area: you collect resources such as Chromatic Iron and Vault Stone, make a vault rock, and use it to open a vault portal. Each portal leads to a new dungeon layout with its own rooms, enemies, loot, and objective.
Inside a vault, the goal is not simply to kill everything. You must read the objective, decide how far the group can travel, collect useful loot, and return to the exit before time runs out. Vault XP is separate from ordinary Minecraft experience. Runs, objectives, and loot raise your vault level; each level grants skill points that you spend on abilities and talents. The long-term endgame described in the CurseForge FAQ requires 25 unique artifacts before you face Eyesore, the Vault Warden.

Requirements before you install
| Item | Requirement or guidance | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Minecraft | Java Edition 1.18.2 | The current Vault Hunters 3rd Edition installation guidance targets this game version. |
| Java | 64-bit Java 17 | The pack needs the Java 17 runtime; a 32-bit installation can prevent the launcher from allocating enough memory. |
| Client memory | Allocate at least 8 GB (8192 MB) to Minecraft | The official site and the CurseForge FAQ both identify this as the practical target for a smooth single-player or multiplayer session. |
| Free storage | Approximately 3 GB | The Vault Hunters Official Wiki lists this amount for the installed pack; leave additional room for worlds, backups, logs, and Java files. |
| Graphics software | Current graphics drivers | Out-of-date drivers can cause crashes or rendering problems even when the pack is installed correctly. |
| Network | Stable connection to the chosen server | Vaults are timed, so latency and disconnects are especially damaging during a run. |
Memory allocated to Minecraft is not the same as total physical RAM in your computer. Your operating system and background applications still need memory. If a machine has only 8 GB of physical RAM, assigning all of it to the game can make the desktop swap or freeze. Close heavy applications first, and increase the allocation only when the computer has spare physical memory.
Choose a launcher
| Launcher | Best for | Strength | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| CurseForge Launcher | Most beginners | The easiest supported installation path; it can find the pack, install a selected release, and create the instance for you. | It exposes less low-level control than a dedicated instance manager. |
| Prism Launcher | Experienced players and administrators | More control over instances, Java selection, memory, and exported configurations. | You must select Java 17 and configure more settings yourself. |
Use one launcher consistently for a given installation. Mixing files from different launchers can leave you with mismatched versions, duplicate mods, or a Java setting that applies to the wrong instance.
Recommended Free Tools
Install with CurseForge
- Download and install the CurseForge Launcher from its official distribution.
- Open the launcher and search for Vault Hunters 3rd Edition.
- Select the release your friends or server administrator are using. Do not assume the newest release is correct if the server is on an older one.
- Choose Install and wait for the launcher to download Minecraft components, Forge files, and the modpack.
- Open the installed profile’s settings and set the Minecraft instance memory slider to 8192 MB, or to a higher value only when your computer has sufficient physical RAM.
- Launch the profile once. The first start can take longer while Forge builds caches and the pack creates configuration files.
- At the title screen, check that the displayed Minecraft and modpack versions match the server. Exit cleanly before changing settings or copying a world.
If the profile will not start, verify Java before reinstalling the entire pack. The most common causes listed by the installation guidance are an incorrect memory allocation, 32-bit Java instead of 64-bit Java 17, a wrong modpack release, old graphics drivers, and an overly ambitious render distance.
Install with Prism Launcher
Prism is useful when you maintain several modded instances or need explicit control over Java and memory. The exact labels can vary slightly by Prism release, but the workflow is the same:

- Install Prism Launcher and sign in with the Microsoft account that owns Minecraft Java Edition.
- Use Prism’s add-instance or browse-modpacks function, locate Vault Hunters 3rd Edition, and select the release required by your group.
- Open the instance settings and select a 64-bit Java 17 executable. If Prism cannot find it, install Java 17 separately and point the instance to that executable.
- In the memory settings, assign approximately 8196 MiB or more where the available system memory allows. Keep enough RAM free for the operating system and any voice-chat or recording software.
- Start the instance and allow the initial library and configuration downloads to finish. Do not copy individual mods from another pack to “fix” a missing dependency.
- Run the instance once, confirm the Minecraft version, then share the exact pack release with the rest of the party.
Pick a multiplayer route
| Route | Setup effort | Access and recurring cost | Administrative control | Persistence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Official Vault Hunters server | Low for players; the operator handles the server | Requires a Minecraft account and an eligible access tier; terms and availability are determined by the official service | Controlled by the server operator | Designed for an always-available shared world while the server remains active |
| Self-hosted server | Higher; you install, configure, secure, and maintain the server files | Uses your own machine or infrastructure; operating cost depends on that setup | Highest control over rules, backups, permissions, and updates | Persists as long as you maintain the files and storage |
| Solo local instance | Lowest | No multiplayer access requirement | You control all settings | Stored on the player’s computer |
The official how-to-play guidance gives a server-memory rule of thumb: 4 GB plus 2 GB for every player who will be online at the same time. That is a planning estimate, not a guarantee for every world or player count. A server running heavy background services, large farms, backups, or additional mods may need more, while an empty server may use less. Monitor memory and tick performance after real players begin exploring.
Joining an official server
Obtain the server address and any access instructions from the operator, then use Minecraft’s multiplayer screen to add or select that server. Every player should launch the same Vault Hunters release and Java version before connecting. If the server uses an access tier, a valid Minecraft account and the required eligibility must be in place before the connection will succeed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSelf-hosting with the supplied files
- Download the server package that matches the Vault Hunters release your group selected.
- Install 64-bit Java 17 on the host and run the supplied startup script or command once so the server can generate its files.
- Accept the Minecraft EULA in the generated configuration, then start the server again.
- Allocate server memory using the 4 GB plus 2 GB per concurrent player rule as a starting point. Reserve additional capacity for the operating system and scheduled backups.
- Set a predictable world save location, restrict administrative permissions to trusted operators, and back up the world before changing major pack or gamerule settings.
- Give players the reachable address and port. If the host is behind a router, configure port forwarding and firewall rules carefully; never expose management panels or file shares to the public internet.
- Test with one player before inviting the whole group. Check that joining, party creation, vault entry, death handling, and world saving all work as expected.
Form a party and agree on rules
Vault Hunters’ co-op systems are party-based. Create or join the party through the pack’s party interface, then verify that every intended teammate appears in the same party before anyone opens a vault. The server can require party membership for entry; the documented default for /gamerule vaultJoinRequireParty is True.
Talk through the rules in the lobby or chat, not after the first death. Decide who carries shared supplies, who calls a retreat, and whether the team waits for disconnected players. A five-minute discussion prevents arguments when the timer is running.

| Setting | Documented behavior | Question for the group |
|---|---|---|
vaultJoinRequireParty |
Default True; controls whether a player must belong to the vault-opening party to join that vault. |
Should latecomers be blocked unless the leader adds them? |
| Party XP sharing | The admin reference documents party XP-sharing modes. | Will the group share progression, and does the selected mode fit players who explore different rooms? |
vaultPartyMapSharing |
Default False; controls whether party members share map information. |
Do you want each player to navigate independently or reveal explored information to the whole team? |
| Spectator settings | The admin reference includes spectator controls. | Can a dead or disconnected player watch the remaining run, and what access should spectators have? |
| Loot and XP multipliers | Server rules can change both loot and experience multipliers. | Are you aiming for the standard progression pace or a deliberately customized server? |
Only an administrator should change these values. Record the final choices in your server’s welcome message so a player joining later sees the same rules.
Prepare for your first vault
- Confirm every client has the identical modpack release and enough allocated memory.
- Store spare food, tools, blocks, and healing items in a location the whole party can reach.
- Bring equipment you can afford to lose under the selected death mode. Do not take irreplaceable overworld items on an experiment.
- Assign a simple voice or chat call for “return now.” A timer makes long explanations dangerous.
- Choose a leader for navigation and a second player to watch the route back. Rotate jobs in later runs.
- Check that the server is saving and that the party requirement, XP sharing, map sharing, and spectator behavior match the agreement.
How a co-op vault run works
- Gather materials. Mine overworld resources, including Chromatic Iron and Vault Stone, and keep enough ordinary Minecraft supplies to recover from a failed run.
- Craft the vault rock. The rock is the consumable preparation item that enables the vault portal.
- Open the portal. The player or party leader activates the prepared portal according to the pack’s interface. Confirm that the correct party is ready before entering.
- Read the objective. Your objective determines where to spend time. Split only when everyone understands the route and has a reliable way to regroup.
- Explore for value. Search rooms, fight only when the reward justifies the risk, and call out exits, hazards, and unopened paths.
- Watch the clock. The documented default vault timer is 25 minutes. Treat the final portion as extraction time rather than extra exploration; a full inventory is worthless if the team cannot escape.
- Extract and sort. Return before the timer expires, then identify useful loot, restock, and spend newly earned skill points when the group is safe.
The best beginner habit is conservative routing. Mark or remember the path from the portal, avoid splitting the party in unfamiliar rooms, and leave when the objective is complete rather than chasing one more chest.

| Vault mode | Death result | Who should choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Casual | Keep items after death | New groups learning navigation, combat, and the timer |
| Normal | A spirit is created on death | Players who want a meaningful penalty without losing the run’s entire inventory permanently |
| Hardcore | No spirit is created on death | Experienced groups that deliberately accept the harshest consequence |
These are vault modes, not a promise that every other server rule remains standard. Loot and XP multipliers can change the pace, and administrators can alter party and spectator behavior. Make the selected mode part of the pre-run briefing, especially when new players join an established world.

Navigator
The navigator tracks the route from the portal, notes branches, and calls the extraction point. This job reduces the most common co-op failure: a team that finds excellent loot but cannot find its way home.

- Play with up to four friends or brave the dungeons alone. Battle new-and-nasty mobs across action-packed, wildly varied levels, in a quest to defeat the evil Arch-Illager!
Front-line player
The front-line player controls dangerous engagements and creates space for teammates. Avoid pulling enemies into rooms where another player is sorting inventory or reading an objective.
Scout and objective reader
The scout checks side rooms and identifies the shortest safe path to objective locations. Scouts should report before crossing a dangerous area rather than silently disappearing from party view.
Support and logistics player
A support player watches food, healing, blocks, and spare tools, then decides when to retreat. On small teams, combine this role with navigation instead of assigning a separate specialist.
Roles are communication aids, not permanent classes. Rotate them so every player learns the route home and understands the group’s risk tolerance.

Progression after the first run
Vault XP from completed runs, objectives, and collected loot advances the character independently of normal Minecraft XP. When the vault level increases, spend the resulting skill points on abilities and talents that support the way you actually play. A player who scouts and a player who stays in melee may need different priorities, so do not copy a build without understanding its role in your party.

The documented endgame objective is collection of 25 unique artifacts, followed by a fight against Eyesore, the Vault Warden. Treat that as a long progression target rather than a first-session task; the practical goal for new players is consistent extraction and a shared understanding of the server rules.
Troubleshoot the problems that stop new players
| Symptom | First checks | Likely fix |
|---|---|---|
| Launcher crashes before the menu | Java architecture and version; allocated memory; selected pack release | Use 64-bit Java 17, set the client allocation to the recommended value, and reinstall or select the release the server uses. |
| Game launches but stutters heavily | Free system memory, render distance, graphics drivers, background applications | Close other applications, lower render distance, update drivers, and avoid assigning more memory than the computer can physically support. |
| Player cannot join the server | Pack version, Minecraft version, Java version, address, access eligibility | Match the server’s exact release and confirm the account has any required official-server access tier. |
| One teammate sees different content | Launcher instance and release number | Do not copy random mods. Export or reinstall the exact pack release used by the server. |
| Player is refused entry to a vault | Party membership and the server’s join requirement | Join the correct party or ask an administrator to review vaultJoinRequireParty. |
| Team loses the run to the clock | Time spent in side rooms and route back to the portal | Set an earlier extraction call, keep a navigator, and stop exploring when the objective is complete. |
| Server becomes slow as more friends connect | Host memory, concurrent-player count, farms, and background services | Compare usage with the 4 GB plus 2 GB-per-player starting rule, remove unnecessary load, and increase server capacity if the host permits. |
When asking for help, include the launcher, pack release, Minecraft version, Java version, allocated memory, and the exact error text. “It crashes” is rarely enough to distinguish a Java problem from a mismatched modpack or a graphics-driver issue.
A practical first-session plan
- Install the selected release and launch it once before the scheduled group session.
- Join the server while nobody is in a vault, then confirm your player name and party membership.
- Walk through the agreed death mode, timer, XP sharing, map sharing, spectator behavior, and late-join rule.
- Gather the first materials together and craft one vault rock.
- Enter with inexpensive equipment, complete the objective, and begin returning earlier than you think necessary.
- After extraction, discuss one thing to keep and one thing to change before opening another portal.
This sequence separates technical problems from gameplay mistakes. If the first run fails, you will know whether the cause was installation, server access, party configuration, or a decision made inside the vault.
