There are two official ways to play Xbox games on an iPhone or iPad: use Xbox Cloud Gaming if you do not own a console, or Xbox Remote Play if you want to stream games installed on your own Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S. Both methods stream the game rather than installing the Xbox console version on iOS or iPadOS.
The two ways to play Xbox games on iPhone and iPad
| Xbox Cloud Gaming | Xbox Remote Play | |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox console required | No | Yes: Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S |
| Game source | Supported cloud catalog or selected owned games | Games installed on your console |
| Subscription | Usually an eligible Game Pass plan; selected free-to-play games only need a free Microsoft account | Console and account required; game and feature requirements vary |
| Best for | Playing Xbox games away from home without owning a console | Accessing your personal Xbox library remotely |
| Main limitation | Catalog, region, plan, server capacity and availability | Your console must be online and available |
In both cases, your iPhone or iPad acts as a screen and input device. Cloud Gaming runs the game on Microsoft’s servers; Remote Play runs it on your Xbox. Cloud saves can let supported games continue across devices, but streaming can have limitations involving resolution, accessories, audio and save behavior.

What you need
- An iPhone running iOS 14.4 or later, or an iPad running iPadOS 14.4 or later, subject to Xbox’s supported-device and regional availability.
- A Microsoft account.
- A supported region.
- An eligible Game Pass plan for subscription games. Selected free-to-play games can be played with a free Microsoft account.
- Safari, Chrome or Microsoft Edge.
- A compatible controller connected over Bluetooth or USB, unless the game supports touch controls.
- At least 10 Mbps download speed. Xbox recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi, and its mobile guidance recommends 20 Mbps or higher for mobile play.
Check the current cloud-gaming page rather than relying on a permanent game list. Availability changes by title, plan, region, platform and time. Owning an Xbox game does not automatically make it cloud-playable: only selected owned games can be streamed.

- Officially supported by Apple. Compatible with Apple and Android devices. Stretchable design fits most phones (100–170mm in length).

How to start Cloud Gaming
- Open Safari, Chrome or Edge on your iPhone or iPad.
- Go to https://www.xbox.com/play.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account linked to your Game Pass plan, or use a free account for a supported free-to-play title.
- Browse or search the cloud-playable catalog.
- Connect a compatible controller unless the selected game displays touch controls.
- Select a game and choose the cloud-play option.
- Wait for the stream to connect.
This is a browser experience, not a native iOS download of the Xbox console game. You can optionally add the website to your Home Screen using Safari’s current share/menu controls, but that creates a web shortcut rather than a native Xbox cloud-gaming app.
Method 2: Use Xbox Remote Play
Remote Play is the better choice when you own an Xbox and want to play games installed on it. It does not use Microsoft’s cloud catalog: the console runs the game and sends the video and controls to your iPhone or iPad.
Remote Play requirements
- An Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S.
- Remote features enabled on the console.
- The desired game installed on the console.
- The Microsoft account associated with the Xbox.
- An iPhone or iPad meeting Xbox’s Remote Play requirements. Xbox’s dedicated Remote Play page lists iOS 15.1 or later.
- A compatible Bluetooth controller.
- At least 10 Mbps download speed; 5 GHz Wi-Fi or mobile data is supported.
- The console powered on or configured for the required standby state and connected to the internet.
How to start Remote Play
- On the Xbox, enable remote features and confirm that the console is online.
- Install the game you want to play.
- Open Safari, Chrome or Edge on the iPhone or iPad.
- Visit xbox.com/play and sign in with the account associated with the console.
- Open the menu in the upper-left corner.
- Switch from Cloud Gaming to Remote Play.
- Follow the prompts to select the console and begin streaming.
- Connect a compatible controller if necessary.
Remote Play uses your Xbox’s storage and requires that the console remain available. It is not a way to play an uninstalled game, and it does not expand the Xbox cloud catalog.

Which Game Pass plan do you need?
You do not automatically need Game Pass Ultimate. Xbox’s current U.S. cloud-gaming information lists Essential, Premium and Ultimate with cloud access, while selected free-to-play games do not require a paid plan. The exact catalog and benefits depend on the market, title and current plan terms.
| U.S. plan | Price signal checked Aug. 18, 2026 | Relevant difference |
|---|---|---|
| Game Pass Essential | $9.99/month after the displayed introductory offer | 50+ games and unlimited cloud gaming |
| Game Pass Premium | $14.99/month after the displayed introductory offer | 200+ games and unlimited cloud gaming |
| Game Pass Ultimate | $22.99/month | 500+ games, unlimited cloud gaming, higher streaming quality and priority access |
These are U.S. prices observed on that date, not universal or permanent prices. Promotions may be limited to eligible customers and may renew automatically at the regular rate. Compare current benefits at Xbox’s Game Pass comparison page and verify that your desired game is included and cloud-playable.
Do you need an Xbox controller?
Not always. Selected games offer Xbox touch controls, but most conventional console games are more comfortable and precise with a controller. Xbox supports compatible controllers connected over Bluetooth or USB, including Xbox controllers and supported PlayStation or mobile controllers.

Includes 1-month Xbox Game Pass Ultimate access, redeemable via the Backbone app.
- NEXT-LEVEL COMPATIBILITY: This gaming controller supports Android phones and iPhone models with a direct USB-C connection. Jump into cloud gaming, native apps, or console streaming with instant recognition and no extra setup, keeping your focus on gameplay.
- RESPONSIVE PRECISION CONTROLS: Designed for serious players, this mobile controller includes an improved D-pad, secure magnetic adapters, and lag-free USB-C input. Whether you’re in a shooter, sports sim, or RPG, enjoy precise performance across genres and platforms.

Access Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, stream from your Xbox or PC with Remote Play, or explore Apple Arcade and Steam Link effortlessly. And with Backbone+, you can unlock free instant access to a wide variety of games, enhancing your experience by letting you play immediately without paying for extra features.
- PLAY ANYWHERE, ANYTIME: With its low-latency USB-C link, this phone gaming controller avoids charging needs and minimizes input delay. Use the 3.5mm audio jack or Bluetooth through your phone for immersive sound, and enjoy reliable gameplay anywhere you take it.
- Bluetooth Xbox controller: Flexible and useful with multiple devices, but you need a phone stand, clip or nearby surface.
- Telescopic controller: More portable and console-like, but its connector, dimensions and case clearance must match your iPhone. Models designed for Lightning and USB-C are not interchangeable.
- Bluetooth controller with an iPad: Often more practical than a telescopic design because of the iPad’s size.
- Touch controls: Free and convenient, but available only in supported games and generally less suitable for fast or complex controls.
Accessories such as Backbone, Razer Kishi and other mobile controllers can work, but check the exact model and connector. Backbone says its app requires Backbone+ to launch Xbox Cloud Gaming or Remote Play from inside that app; Microsoft’s browser route at xbox.com/play is a separate option.
Cloud Gaming versus Remote Play: which should you choose?
- Choose Cloud Gaming if you do not own an Xbox, want to play away from home without leaving a console running, or want access to supported games from Microsoft’s servers.
- Choose Remote Play if you own an Xbox and the game is installed on it, especially if it is not in the cloud catalog.
- Use neither as your main solution if your internet connection is unreliable or you need offline play. Native iPhone/iPad games avoid streaming latency, though they are not Xbox console versions.
Cloud Gaming and Remote Play both depend heavily on the network. Xbox lists 10 Mbps as a minimum and recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi; its mobile guidance recommends 20 Mbps or higher. Those figures are not guarantees of smooth play. Latency, packet loss, congestion, Wi-Fi signal strength, server load and—on Remote Play—the console’s upload connection can matter just as much as download speed.
For a better stream
- Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi close to the router.
- Pause large downloads and video streams on the same network.
- Use Ethernet for the Xbox where possible when using Remote Play.
- Test both Wi-Fi and cellular data to identify whether the local network is the problem.
- Remember that cellular play can consume substantial data and may incur carrier charges.
- If the picture is clear but controls feel delayed, investigate latency or instability rather than buying a higher-resolution display.
Fix common Xbox streaming problems
The Xbox app does not show Cloud Gaming
Use a supported browser and go directly to xbox.com/play. Xbox’s current mobile instructions center on the web experience rather than requiring the Xbox app.

A game will not launch
Confirm that the title is cloud-playable, available in your region and included with your plan. A game may have left the catalog, be unavailable on your platform or require a different entitlement. For an owned game, check whether Xbox specifically supports cloud streaming; ownership alone is not enough.
Remote Play cannot find the console
- Confirm that it is an Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S.
- Check that remote features are enabled.
- Sign out and back in with the Microsoft account linked to the console.
- Confirm that the console is online and in the required standby state.
- Check the separate iOS 15.1-or-later Remote Play requirement.
- Restart the browser session and console if the connection remains unavailable.
The controller connects but does nothing
Check whether iOS or iPadOS recognizes it, then disconnect and reconnect Bluetooth. Close and reopen the browser session, try USB if supported, and confirm that the particular game supports controller input. A third-party companion app is not automatically required.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe stream is blurry or laggy
Move closer to the router, use 5 GHz Wi-Fi, reduce competing network traffic and test another connection. For Remote Play, also test the Xbox’s network. Blurry video usually points to bandwidth or stream conditions; delayed controls more often indicate latency, packet loss or congestion.

Touch controls or the Remote Play option are missing
Touch controls are title-specific, so look for the touch indicator or Xbox’s current touch-enabled-game information. For Remote Play, open the upper-left menu at xbox.com/play and switch modes. If the option still does not appear, recheck the account, console type, remote settings, browser, region and device requirements.
iPhone versus iPad
The official Cloud Gaming and Remote Play routes are the same on both devices. An iPad provides a larger screen, although low stream resolutions can make softness more noticeable. An iPhone is easier to pair with a telescopic controller, while an iPad is usually better suited to a separate Bluetooth controller. Do not assume that every iPad model is supported simply because it runs a recent iPadOS version; Xbox’s supported-device and regional rules still apply.
