Use a Custom Game to isolate one matchup question, hold the starting conditions steady, and repeat a short exchange before changing one variable. A friend or training partner is the most reliable way to practice a live opponent; use Workshop when you need scripted repetition. Matchup results depend on map, timing, cooldowns, and team context—not just hero choice.
Set up a repeatable matchup drill
Overwatch’s Game Browser and Custom Games let players create games and adjust rules and settings. Blizzard describes changing game variables, including hero abilities, movement, health, and damage, though current options and menu labels can vary by mode and game version. Start with ordinary Custom Game settings if the lobby can provide the map, teams, hero choices, and gameplay values your drill needs. See Blizzard’s Game Browser overview for the feature’s general scope; its menu instructions are historical, so follow the labels in your current client.

- Choose one question. For example: can the defender survive a specific dive approach, or can the attacker force a defensive cooldown before committing? Narrow questions make it easier to tell what each repetition teaches.
- Fix the starting conditions. Choose a map location with useful cover or sightlines, then agree on starting distance, health or other relevant resources, and the first action. Keep the heroes and setup the same for several attempts.
- Run a short exchange. The attacker uses one defined approach; the defender tries one response. Reset once the exchange has a clear outcome rather than letting the exercise become an unstructured full match.
- Change one variable. Try a different entry angle, distance, piece of cover, cooldown state, or timing. Changing several conditions together makes it hard to identify what affected the outcome.
- Switch sides. Give each player practice attacking and defending, then try a few less-scripted exchanges to see whether the lesson carries over.
- Write down a conditional takeaway. Make it specific to the test: “On this sightline, with ability X ready, approach Y was easier to punish.” A handful of repetitions does not establish a universal counter.
Choose the right tool: Custom Game settings or Workshop
Use standard settings for simple drills
Start with the lobby’s ordinary controls when you only need a chosen map, teams, hero restrictions, or altered values exposed by that mode. Availability can differ across modes, so check the settings for the lobby you created rather than assuming every option exists everywhere.
Use Workshop for scripted repetition
Workshop is useful when a drill needs timed rounds, forced or rotating heroes, randomized order, or other automated actions. Blizzard’s Workshop walkthrough explains scripts built from rules, events, optional conditions, and actions. Its example constructs a mirrored Deathmatch mode that selects heroes and advances rounds. Blizzard summarizes the range of possible rules this way: “Rules can do many things, like change how a hero’s movement and abilities work, modify how players are damaged or healed, or even display text under certain circumstances.”

The walkthrough describes opening the Workshop through Play > Game Browser > Create > Settings > Workshop, but that is a historical path and may no longer match the live interface. Check current labels in-game. For debugging, Blizzard documents opening the script debugger, enabling it, and using Workshop Inspector to review rule activity, conditions, actions, and a timeline. The same walkthrough says scripts can be shared from Share settings and imported through Import; confirm the current interface before relying on those labels.
Compare heroes under conditions that matter
Keep tests focused on the factors that can change an encounter. These are practical drill variables, not a formal Blizzard scoring system.

- Map geometry: cover, corners, elevation, sightlines, and escape routes.
- Range and approach: starting distance, entry angle, and whether the target sees the approach coming.
- Cooldowns and resources: which mobility or defensive tools are ready, and when either player uses them.
- Timing: whether the engagement occurs before or after a key ability, during a reload, or with an ultimate available.
- Fight context: an isolated duel differs from an engagement with teammate follow-up, ally pressure, or peel.
Blizzard’s hero-design explanation says Overwatch 2 retains clear hero strengths and weaknesses while aiming for fewer hard counters and a broader range of effective picks. Its statement is about design direction, not a guarantee that every pick is equally effective in every situation. Treat a matchup result as a tendency under your tested conditions, not proof that one hero automatically wins.
Practice alone—and know the bot limits
A friend or training partner is the clearest default for practicing a live matchup. Workshop can automate some repeatable conditions where the current editor supports them, but a scripted setup is not the same as testing against an unpredictable human opponent.

There is one documented, mode-specific solo option: Blizzard’s Stadium custom-games overview describes adding AI bots as allies or enemies in Stadium custom lobbies. It also covers Draft, mirrored-matchup and Hero Bans toggles, mode and map selection, and adjustable win conditions. Do not assume those bots or controls are available in standard Custom Games; inspect the settings for the particular mode. Blizzard’s Overwatch 2 hero-unlock explainer states that all heroes are automatically playable in Custom Games, but it reflects an earlier point in the live-service game’s history. Mode-specific or later changes may affect current access, so check the lobby and current client rather than treating that statement as a universal guarantee.
