Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 preload began on October 21, 2024, at 9:00 a.m. PT, ahead of the game’s October 25 launch. That window has now passed, so the dates and instructions below are a launch-day guide and historical reference—not a current promise that Black Ops 6 can still be preloaded.
Digital preorders and qualifying 2024 Game Pass subscribers could preload Campaign, Multiplayer, and Zombies on PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, Battle.net, and Microsoft Store for PC. Players who already had Call of Duty installed received the content as an update; everyone else had to begin the installation through their platform storefront.

When did Black Ops 6 preload begin?
Activision’s official launch information said preload opened on Monday, October 21, 2024, at 9:00 a.m. Pacific Time on all supported platforms. The game launched on October 25, 2024.

Preloading only downloaded the game files. It did not provide early access: players still had to wait for the official unlock, complete any final update, and sign in with the account that owned the entitlement.
Who could preload Black Ops 6?
- Digital preorder customers: Players who purchased a digital edition through PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, Battle.net, or Microsoft Store for PC were eligible.
- Qualifying Game Pass subscribers: At launch, Activision listed Game Pass Ultimate, Game Pass PC, and Game Pass Console as access routes under the 2024 terms.
- Existing Call of Duty players: If Call of Duty was already installed, Black Ops 6 arrived through an update to that installation.
- Clean-install players: Anyone without the Call of Duty application had to find Black Ops 6 in the relevant storefront and select the install option.
A physical-edition purchase did not automatically guarantee the same digital preload entitlement. The account, platform, edition, and any required disc or subscription entitlement all mattered. Do not assume that inserting a physical copy would always allow a preload before launch.
Activision supported PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC through Microsoft Store, Battle.net, and Steam. Cross-generation console packages could expose more than one version, so check that the installed build matches your console.
How to preload on PS4 and PS5
- Sign in to the PlayStation Network account that purchased the digital edition.
- Open Game Library or the PlayStation Store.
- Find Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.
- Select the game and choose Download or the available preload option.
- On PS5, confirm that the PS5 version is selected if your purchase includes both generations.
- Check the download queue and available storage.
You could leave the console powered on, use Rest Mode, or enable automatic downloads if those settings were configured. PS5 owners should avoid accidentally installing the PS4 version when the current-generation build is available. Activision’s edition information did not treat every physical PS5 edition as automatically including a PS4 entitlement.

How to preload on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S
- Sign in with the Microsoft account used for the preorder or qualifying Game Pass subscription.
- Open My games & apps.
- Select Full library, then Owned games or the Game Pass library.
- Find Black Ops 6 and select Install.
- Confirm that the Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S version matches your console.
- Check the download queue and free storage.
If Call of Duty was already installed, the preload could appear as an update rather than a separate game download. That update also delivered the new Call of Duty interface.
Game Pass considerations
Under the launch-era 2024 terms, Game Pass Console could provide access to the game, but online console Multiplayer and Zombies required online multiplayer access. Activision said Game Pass Console users needed either Game Pass Ultimate or an additional Game Pass Core subscription for those online modes.
Do not treat those 2024 plan names as a description of Xbox’s current 2026 lineup. Microsoft has changed Game Pass tiers and benefits since Black Ops 6 launched. Check the current Game Pass page for today’s availability and terms.
How to preload on PC
The PC version required an SSD and 102 GB of available storage at launch. That figure applied to the launch PC specification; it was not a universal exact install size for every console or configuration.

Steam
- Open Steam and go to Library.
- Select Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.
- Click Install when the preload becomes available.
- Select an SSD with sufficient free space.
- Let Steam complete the preload and any final launch-day update.
- Restart Steam if the install option does not appear after the announced time.
Steam’s stated launch time was October 24, 2024, at 9:00 p.m. PT.
Battle.net
- Open the Battle.net desktop app and sign in.
- Select Call of Duty.
- Choose Black Ops 6 if multiple Call of Duty products or content options appear.
- Select Install or Update.
- Choose an SSD and verify that enough space is available.
- Allow Battle.net to finish the preload and apply any final update.
Battle.net used the same published PC unlock time as Steam: October 24, 2024, at 9:00 p.m. PT.
Microsoft Store and Xbox app
- Sign in to the Microsoft Store or Xbox app with the account that owned the game or held an eligible Game Pass subscription.
- Search for Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.
- Select Install.
- Choose the installation drive and confirm the available space.
- Update Windows, the Xbox app, and Microsoft Store if necessary.
- Check the Xbox app’s download queue if the Store page does not show the install directly.
Microsoft Store for PC used a regional rollout between October 24 and October 25 rather than the single Steam and Battle.net unlock time. The exact timing therefore depended on the player’s region.

For PC, Activision listed an SSD and 102 GB of available space at launch. Reserve more than that minimum where possible, because launch patches, temporary installation files, shader compilation, and future updates can require additional room.

On consoles, do not assume that the PC figure is the exact required size. The final footprint could vary by platform, installed modes, shared Call of Duty files, and updates. Pause competing downloads and use wired Ethernet where practical to make the preload more reliable.
What if the preload did not appear?
- Check the account: Confirm that you are signed in to the account that placed the preorder or holds the Game Pass entitlement.
- Refresh the storefront: Restart the console, PC launcher, Xbox app, Microsoft Store, Steam, or Battle.net.
- Check the queue: The download may already be waiting as an update rather than appearing as a new game.
- Search directly: Open the platform storefront and search for Black Ops 6 instead of relying on the Call of Duty hub.
- Verify the edition: Make sure you are viewing the correct platform and generation.
- Confirm eligibility: Physical purchases, expired subscriptions, and accounts without the correct entitlement may not show a preload.
- Free more storage: A download can fail to begin or unpack if the drive has only the nominal minimum free.
If a download repeatedly failed, pause and resume it, restart the device and router, install pending system or launcher updates, and stop other downloads. On PC, confirm that the selected drive is an SSD. Try the launcher’s repair or update option before deleting the entire Call of Duty installation.
What if the installed game stayed locked?
That was expected before the official release time. A preload downloaded the files but did not bypass the release lock. The correct account entitlement, regional unlock time, online authentication, and possibly a final update were still required.

For Steam and Battle.net, the published PC unlock was October 24, 2024, at 9:00 p.m. PT. Microsoft Store PC used regional rollout timing. Console availability also depended on the platform’s regional launch process.
Could you uninstall Warzone or older Call of Duty content?
Activision said that, on most platforms, Black Ops 6 and Warzone were separate downloads. The updated Call of Duty interface also allowed players more control over installed titles and modes.
Use the game’s file-management options to remove unwanted content. Do not delete shared files blindly: removing them can force another download or affect other installed Call of Duty content.
