On September 4, 2025, TechRadar reported that Xbox Game Pass subscribers could queue Hollow Knight: Silksong for download from the Xbox mobile app before its scheduled launch. It was a way to get the download started—not to play early. The game launched that day, so this is historical launch-day guidance, not a way to get ahead of a current countdown.
What the Xbox app workaround did
The reported method sent an installation request from the Xbox app to a linked console. According to TechRadar’s September 4, 2025 article, it required an Xbox One, Xbox Series X, or Xbox Series S, a phone with the Xbox app, and an active Game Pass subscription. The console could then download the game ahead of the scheduled release.
TechRadar’s author said they tested the process in the UK on Android and cautioned that it might not be an intentional feature and could vary. Treat it as a reported launch-day workaround, not a guaranteed or continuing Xbox service.
How the reported preload steps worked
- Open the Xbox app on your phone and sign in to the account associated with your active Game Pass subscription.
- Open the Xbox Game Pass tab and scroll to Coming to Game Pass.
- Select Hollow Knight: Silksong, then tap the install option.
- If prompted, link the Xbox console you want to use.
- Check the console to confirm that the download has started.
Preloading did not unlock early play
The app request could start a download, but it did not bypass the game’s release lock. Players still had to wait until the official release time to launch Silksong, as TechRadar noted.

What about PlayStation and Nintendo consoles?
In its September 4, 2025 report, TechRadar said there was no easy equivalent preload path for PS5, PS4, Nintendo Switch, or Nintendo Switch 2. That comparison describes the situation reported on launch day; it does not establish how those platforms handle preloads now.

Team Cherry announced on September 4, 2025, that Hollow Knight: Silksong was available on all platforms and day one on Xbox Game Pass. Its official launch notice confirms that the release has passed. The studio’s release-trailer description lists Steam, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, GOG, and Humble Bundle. The US PlayStation Store listing identifies PS4 and PS5 versions and gives September 4, 2025 as the release date.
