To prepare a Pokémon for a Max Battle in Pokémon GO, first make sure it is Dynamax or Gigantamax—ordinary Pokémon cannot enter. Then unlock and level its Max Moves with Candy and Max Particles, reserve enough particles for battle entry, check the current Power Spot Boss, and bring a group sized for that encounter.
During the battle, build the meter with Fast Attacks, dodge targeted attacks, collect arena energy, and spend the three-turn Max phase on damage, healing, or damage reduction as your party needs. The exact particle limits, costs, available bosses, and Power Spot locations can change, so use the values shown in the live game rather than an old guide.

What makes a Pokémon eligible?
Eligibility is the first gate. The official Pokémon GO guidance states that only Dynamax and Gigantamax Pokémon can be used in Max Battles. A high-level, fully powered-up ordinary Pokémon still cannot substitute for a Max Pokémon.
You need at least one eligible Pokémon in the battle party before you can join. A party can contain more than one Max Pokémon, and bringing alternatives is useful when the boss has a difficult matchup or when a role such as healing is missing from the group.

How to obtain your first eligible Pokémon
- Catch Dynamax Pokémon from Max Battle encounters.
- Complete the introductory To the Max! Special Research, which provides a route to initial Dynamax encounters.
- Look for current Max Battle opportunities at Power Spots; the available encounters rotate, so the Pokémon you can obtain depends on the live game and event schedule.
Do not spend resources training a Pokémon until you have confirmed the Max form symbol and that it can be selected for a Max Battle. Its ordinary Combat Power, moveset, or performance in other battle formats does not by itself satisfy the entry requirement.
What preparation involves
| Preparation task | What it accomplishes | What can change |
|---|---|---|
| Obtain a Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokémon | Meets the entry requirement and gives you a Max-capable battler | Encounter availability and event rotations |
| Unlock and level Max Moves | Improves damage, healing, or mitigation during the Max phase | Move availability, costs, and balance may be updated |
| Collect Max Particles | Pays for battle entry and Max Move training | Storage and daily collection limits are live-game values |
| Check the Power Spot Boss | Lets you choose a suitable type, role, and roster | Boss, moves, and location can rotate |
| Arrange a group | Provides enough damage and support for the encounter | Required strength depends on the boss and your party |
Step 1: Choose the right Max Pokémon for the encounter
There is no universally best Max Pokémon established by the official guidance. Make the choice after checking the current Power Spot Boss and the people joining you. Evaluate each candidate on five questions:
- Can it enter? Confirm that it is Dynamax or Gigantamax and appears as selectable for the Max Battle.
- Does its attack fit the boss? For a Dynamax Pokémon, the Max attack’s type follows the type of its Fast Attack. A Fast Attack change can therefore alter the type of Max damage available.
- What role does the party lack? A group made entirely of attackers may need Max Spirit healing or Max Guard mitigation, particularly in a long or difficult fight.
- Can you afford the training? Compare the Candy and Max Particles needed for the desired moves with the particles you must keep for battle entry.
- Will the group be large enough? A strong individual Pokémon does not remove the need for enough Trainers in a demanding Gigantamax encounter.
Use the boss’s displayed type, attacks, and recommendations in the live game as your final check. The sources establish the move roles and battle limits, but not a single upgrade order or species ranking that works for every boss.

A second eligible Pokémon gives you flexibility if the first one has a poor matchup or is knocked out. A practical roster can include a primary damage dealer, a support-oriented Pokémon with Max Spirit or Max Guard, and a backup whose Fast Attack produces a different Max attack type. This is a planning framework, not an official required composition; the best mix depends on the boss and the teammates’ rosters.
Step 2: Unlock and train Max Moves
Select the Max Pokémon in your collection and open its Max Move controls. Use Candy and Max Particles to unlock available moves and raise their levels. Niantic’s Help Center explains that trained Max Moves become more effective against a Max Pokémon, so an untrained move is not equivalent to the same move at a higher level.

Understand each move role before spending resources
| Move | Who can use it | Effect and planning use |
|---|---|---|
| Max attack | Dynamax Pokémon; Gigantamax Pokémon instead have a species-specific G-Max move | Deals damage. For Dynamax Pokémon, its type is based on the Pokémon’s Fast Attack type. |
| Max Spirit | Dynamax Pokémon and Gigantamax Pokémon | Heals the user and allies. Choose it when keeping the group alive is more valuable than adding another damage option. |
| Max Guard | Dynamax Pokémon and Gigantamax Pokémon | Reduces damage from the opposing Power Spot Boss. It supports survival when incoming damage is the main problem. |
| G-Max move | Gigantamax Pokémon, with the move determined by species | Provides that species’ special Max attack. Gigantamax Pokémon can also learn the support moves above. |
Do not assume that every move starts unlocked or that every Pokémon has the same options. Check the individual Pokémon’s Max Move panel. The official information describes what the moves do, but it does not prescribe one best level or a universal order for investing in them.
How to decide what to level first
- Damage-first party: level the relevant attack when your group already has dependable healing and can withstand the boss’s damage.
- Attrition problem: prioritize Max Spirit when teammates repeatedly fall into danger before the Max phase ends.
- Heavy incoming damage: consider Max Guard when reducing the boss’s damage will keep several Pokémon active long enough to complete the fight.
- Gigantamax encounter: account for the species-specific G-Max move, then decide whether your party still needs Spirit or Guard support.
These are role-based decisions, not guarantees. Review the boss, the number and strength of participating Trainers, and which support moves your teammates already provide before committing particles.
Step 3: Collect and budget Max Particles
Max Particles come from interacting with Power Spots and from exploration. The official guide says exploration collection can use Adventure Sync and can be surfaced through the Nearby menu. Particles are spent both to enter Max Battles and to unlock or level Max Moves, so treating all of your balance as training currency can leave you unable to participate.
Use the live limits, not an old cap
The official general guidance confirms that daily collection and storage are limited, but it does not publish a stable numeric cap. Open the current in-game particle display before planning a route or promising a specific number to a group. Limits, prices, and bonuses can change with updates and events.
For context only, the 2024 GO Wild Area: Global event recorded a temporary limit of 1,600 Max Particles per day. That was an event bonus and is not a current general rule. Do not use it as your ordinary daily target.

A safe spending sequence
- Check your balance and storage space. If storage is full, additional collection may be wasted; if your balance is low, collect before traveling to the battle.
- Reserve entry particles. Confirm the entry requirement shown for the intended Max Battle and keep that amount available.
- Unlock the role you actually need. Do not unlock every option automatically if the party has already covered that role.
- Level the selected move only as far as the encounter justifies. Compare the displayed cost with the particles needed for upcoming battles.
- Recheck after joining an event group. A new boss or a different number of participants can change whether another training purchase is worthwhile.
The game’s displayed costs are authoritative for your Pokémon and the current version. Avoid relying on a fixed cost quoted by an older article.

Step 4: Scout the Power Spot and organize Trainers
Power Spots host Max Battles and emit Max Particles. Their locations can change, so check the map near the time you intend to play rather than assuming a previous location is still active. Confirm the boss, the start window, and whether the spot is reachable before spending particles or arranging travel.
Know the participation limits
| Encounter type | Official group limit | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Dynamax Max Battle | Up to four Trainers | Four is a maximum, not a promise that every boss can be defeated by four unprepared players. |
| Gigantamax Max Battle | Up to 40 Trainers, arranged in groups of four or fewer | The larger attendance option exists because Gigantamax encounters can be difficult; actual success still depends on boss strength and the quality of each group. |
The Pokémon Company’s strategy guidance warns that Gigantamax battles are difficult even with other Trainers and recommends powering up Dynamax Pokémon and leveling their Max Moves before the event. Treat a large turnout as a planning requirement for a hard encounter, not as a universal minimum for every boss.
Coordinate roles before the countdown
- Tell the group which Pokémon can provide damage, Max Spirit, and Max Guard.
- Identify who has a Fast Attack type that gives useful Max attack coverage for the boss.
- Make sure each participant has at least one eligible Max Pokémon and enough particles for entry.
- For Gigantamax battles, organize groups of four or fewer as the game requires, while coordinating the overall attendance separately.
- Have a fallback plan if someone cannot join the intended Power Spot or if the boss changes before the battle starts.
Step 5: Play the battle phase efficiently
Preparation continues after the lobby. The regular phase is where you build the meter and preserve your Pokémon for the Max transformation.
Regular phase controls
- Tap to use Fast Attacks. This deals damage and builds the energy needed for the Max phase.
- Dodge when the target prompt appears over your Pokémon. Avoiding a marked attack preserves health for the transformation and reduces the demand on Max Spirit.
- Swipe toward energy icons in the arena. Collecting them fills the meter faster than relying on attacks alone.
- Watch the meter rather than attacking on autopilot. Once it is full, the Pokémon transforms for three turns, so enter that phase with a clear role in mind.
Use the three-turn Max phase deliberately
The official guide states that a full meter triggers Dynamax or Gigantamax for three turns. Use the available move that solves the party’s immediate problem:

- Attack: choose the Max attack or species-specific G-Max move when the group can survive and needs to push the boss’s health down.
- Max Spirit: heal the user and allies when keeping several Trainers active will produce more total damage than another attack.
- Max Guard: reduce damage from the Power Spot Boss when incoming attacks threaten to remove your team before the next transformation.
Because the phase is short, decide before the meter fills whether you are entering as damage, healer, or protector. The right choice can change between transformations as the boss’s health and your party’s condition change.
If your Pokémon faints
A fainted Pokémon does not end your participation. The official guidance says you can continue tapping and then cheer for teammates, which fills their meters faster. Keep contributing instead of leaving the encounter; your support can help another player reach the Max phase sooner.
How to choose investments when resources are limited
When Candy or Max Particles are scarce, compare candidates with a simple decision matrix rather than automatically powering up the highest-level Pokémon.
| Question | If the answer is yes | Resource implication |
|---|---|---|
| Does the Pokémon’s Max attack type suit the current boss? | It can serve as a focused damage option. | Attack training is more defensible, provided entry particles remain available. |
| Does the group lack healing? | Max Spirit may prevent multiple knockouts. | Support training can add more value than a small damage increase. |
| Is the boss dealing overwhelming damage? | Max Guard can reduce pressure during the Max phase. | Mitigation may be preferable to another attacker. |
| Is this a rare or difficult Gigantamax opportunity? | The species-specific G-Max move may be central to the encounter. | Plan for the event’s group size and train before the start rather than improvising at the Power Spot. |
| Will spending now leave too few particles for entry? | You may be locked out of the battle you trained for. | Delay optional upgrades and protect the entry reserve. |
This framework does not rank species or promise a particular build. It keeps your investment tied to the boss, the party’s roles, and the particles you can actually collect.

Bringing an ordinary Pokémon
Symptom: the Pokémon is strong in raids or other battles but cannot be selected. Fix: obtain a Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokémon through a Max Battle encounter or the To the Max! Special Research, then add that eligible Pokémon to the party.

Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Training every move before checking the boss
Symptom: particles are spent on a role the group does not need. Fix: inspect the Power Spot Boss and ask whether the party needs damage, healing, or mitigation before unlocking or leveling a move.
Using all particles on upgrades
Symptom: the Pokémon is trained but you cannot pay the displayed entry cost. Fix: reserve entry particles first and collect more through Power Spots and exploration if storage and daily limits allow.
Assuming a historical cap is still current
Symptom: a route or daily target based on an old event no longer matches the game. Fix: check the current particle display. The 1,600-per-day figure from the 2024 GO Wild Area: Global event was temporary.
Arriving without enough Trainers
Symptom: the group reaches the Power Spot but cannot deal enough damage before its Pokémon fall. Fix: use the official limits as ceilings, then recruit based on the boss’s difficulty and the strength of the actual group. Gigantamax encounters often require deliberate coordination even when many players are present.
Ignoring the meter and energy icons
Symptom: the boss reaches another attack cycle while your Max meter is still incomplete. Fix: tap consistently, dodge targeted attacks, and swipe toward every visible energy icon so the three-turn Max phase arrives sooner.
Pre-battle checklist
- At least one party member is Dynamax or Gigantamax.
- The selected Pokémon’s Fast Attack gives the Max attack type you want, or its G-Max move fits the plan.
- Max Spirit and Max Guard are considered where the party needs healing or mitigation.
- Max Moves have been unlocked or leveled with Candy and Max Particles appropriate to this boss.
- Enough particles remain for the displayed battle-entry requirement.
- The Power Spot location, boss, and start time have been checked recently.
- The group understands whether this is a four-Trainer Dynamax battle or a Gigantamax battle using groups of four or fewer within a larger attendance limit.
- Each Trainer knows whether they are prioritizing damage, healing, or protection during the three-turn Max phase.
Keeping the plan current
Max Battles are a live feature. Boss rotations, Power Spot locations, particle limits, entry costs, available encounters, move costs, and event bonuses can change. Before each important battle, use the information displayed in Pokémon GO as the final authority, even if you prepared the same Pokémon successfully in an earlier event.
The durable principles are simpler: bring a legal Max Pokémon, train the moves that match the party’s needs, protect enough particles for entry, and coordinate around the boss rather than assuming one species or one upgrade order is always best.
