How to Prepare for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Before the November 5, 2026 Remake

Everything you need before The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time arrives on Nintendo Switch 2 on November 5, 2026, including whether to replay the original, the provisional 27 GB size, optional companion features, and what Nintendo has announced as new.

You do not need to finish the original Ocarina of Time before playing Nintendo’s remake. The announced release is a one-player Nintendo Switch 2 game arriving November 5, 2026. Prepare by confirming you have the correct console, reserving provisional storage for a roughly 27 GB download if buying digitally, deciding whether you want a nostalgic replay or a spoiler-free first run, and treating optional features such as ZELDA NOTES, amiibo, and real-ocarina play as extras rather than requirements.

What is confirmed about the remake?

Nintendo currently lists The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time as a Nintendo Switch 2 release scheduled for November 5, 2026. Because that date is still in the future, there are no verified hands-on conclusions about performance, final image quality, control feel, difficulty, or the full extent of gameplay changes. Nintendo’s product pages describe the project as a remake for a new era, with the following announced features:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Completely overhauled or reimagined visuals.
  • Voiced cutscenes and expanded dialogue.
  • A refreshed or symphonic orchestral soundtrack.
  • Enhanced controls and modern camera movement.
  • New movement options, including dashing and freely leaping over gaps or obstacles.
  • Horse riding later in the adventure.
  • “Threads of Time,” a recap and progress tool that can review the story, show current objectives, and display a tapestry of Link’s journey.

These are Nintendo’s announcements, not independent review findings. The final product could differ in details, and Nintendo notes that specifications such as the rating and download size may change before launch.

Which console do you need?

The announced remake is listed for Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo has not established compatibility with the original Nintendo Switch, so do not assume that an existing Switch console will run it. If you own the first-generation system only, verify Nintendo’s final compatibility information before buying the game or planning your storage.

Play modes and player count

Nintendo lists a single-system, one-player experience with TV, tabletop, and handheld play modes. There is no announced local or online multiplayer requirement. Plan for one person using one Switch 2 system, regardless of whether you play docked, on a tabletop stand, or in handheld mode.

Languages and regional ratings

The US listing names Japanese, English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Korean, Dutch, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Latin American Spanish, Canadian French, Brazilian Portuguese, Traditional Chinese, American English, and Polish among the supported languages. Language availability can be region-dependent, so check the eShop listing for your account region before purchase.

Ratings are also regional. Nintendo’s US page shows an ESRB rating of Animated Blood and Fantasy Violence, while Nintendo UK shows PEGI 12. Neither label should be treated as a universal worldwide rating.

Do you need to play the original Ocarina of Time first?

No. Nintendo presents the remake as an entry point to the series. The official story setup explains what a new player needs: Link is summoned by the Great Deku Tree, Ganondorf seeks the Triforce, and Link begins a quest to save Hyrule across two eras. The ocarina’s melodies open paths and can change day to night. Nothing in Nintendo’s announcement says that completing the Nintendo 64 game, a later port, or any other Zelda title is required.

Replay the original if you want recognition and nostalgia

A replay is worthwhile when your goal is to recognize locations, puzzles, characters, melodies, and story beats as the remake updates them. It can also refresh the two-era structure and the role of time-changing songs. The trade-off is that you will carry detailed expectations into a version Nintendo says has modernized visuals, controls, dialogue, camera movement, and music.

Start fresh if you want the remake’s version first

Starting with the remake avoids deliberately comparing every room and line with the 1998 design. It also lets you encounter Nintendo’s new dialogue, voiced scenes, movement options, and “Threads of Time” without deciding in advance how closely they should match the original. If you later want historical context, you can play an N64 edition through Nintendo’s classic-game service when your subscription provides access.

A practical decision test

Your priority Better preparation Why
Remembering the original’s route and story Replay the original Familiarity makes changes easier to spot.
Experiencing the remake without built-in comparisons Start with the remake Nintendo describes it as accessible to newcomers.
Learning the series’ broader history Use either order The announced premise supplies the necessary setup.

How much storage should you reserve?

Nintendo’s US product listing currently estimates a 27 GB game file for the digital version. The same listing warns that the figure, like other product details, may not be final. Treat 27 GB as a planning estimate rather than a guaranteed final download.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Check free space on the Switch 2 before launch week.
  2. Leave more room than the estimate if possible so a changed download size or update does not block installation.
  3. Recheck the final eShop file-size entry close to November 5, 2026.
  4. If space is tight, decide whether a physical copy better fits your routine, while remembering that physical stock is limited by availability.

Do not delete an existing game solely to meet the preliminary number months in advance. Confirm the final requirement first, then clear space or expand storage according to Nintendo’s supported options.

Physical or digital: which launch format fits you?

Nintendo of America says a physical version with special textured foil packaging will be available at launch while supplies last. Exact regional editions, retailer inventory, preorder timing, and packaging can vary. Nintendo has not supplied a universal price difference between formats, so choose based on logistics rather than an assumed discount.

Consideration Physical copy Digital copy
Availability Launch stock and the textured-foil edition are limited by supply and region. Availability depends on the eShop listing and account region.
Storage Reduces the need to download the full game file, although updates may still require space. Plan around Nintendo’s provisional 27 GB estimate and verify the final size.
Switching games Requires changing the game card. Lets you launch without swapping cards.
Packaging Includes the announced textured foil packaging while supplies last. Has no physical package.
Delivery and timing Depends on local stock, shipping, or store pickup. Can be downloaded when the eShop release is available.

Confirm stock and the exact regional edition immediately before ordering. A physical launch statement does not guarantee that every shop or territory will receive the same quantity.

What is “Threads of Time,” and how should you use it?

Nintendo UK describes “Threads of Time” as an in-game way to recap the story, review current objectives, and inspect a tapestry chronicling Link’s journey. It is designed for players who lose track of a long quest or return after a break. Use it as a progress reference rather than assuming it replaces exploration or puzzle-solving.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why it matters for first-time players

The adventure spans two eras and includes dungeons and sacred temples containing puzzles, enemies, and treasures. A recap tool can help you remember why a location matters, which objective is active, and how earlier events connect to the present era.

Why it matters for returning players

If you replay the game over several weeks, “Threads of Time” can reduce the need to consult an outside guide just to recall your last objective. Nintendo has not published a complete description of every screen or whether the tool reveals solutions, so do not assume it functions as a full walkthrough.

Prepare for the remake’s time-based world

Nintendo says time passes in the game, with day and night potentially changing which people or enemies appear. The ocarina’s melodies can alter the time of day and open paths. That means preparation is less about memorizing a fixed schedule and more about recognizing that an obstacle, character, or enemy may depend on when you arrive.

  • Pay attention to whether a person or enemy appears only at a particular time.
  • Remember that an ocarina melody can change the time of day instead of requiring a long wait.
  • Keep track of melodies as you learn them; they may affect both travel and access.
  • Expect dungeons and sacred temples to combine puzzles, combat, and treasure hunting.

Nintendo has not announced a complete puzzle or enemy list, so avoid planning around guides that claim to reveal every change before launch.

How should you prepare for the new movement and controls?

Nintendo describes enhanced controls, modern camera movements, dashing, and the ability to leap freely over gaps or obstacles. The UK page also says Link can ride a horse later in the quest. These descriptions indicate a more contemporary control vocabulary, but they do not establish exact button mappings, sensitivity options, or whether every original interaction has changed.

Before starting

  • Update the Switch 2 system software and the game when prompted.
  • Choose TV, tabletop, or handheld play according to the camera distance and comfort you prefer.
  • Keep the control scheme available in-game until you learn how dash, jump, camera movement, and item use are assigned.
  • Do not expect an original Nintendo 64 controller layout to map one-to-one onto the remake.

Because there is no hands-on evidence yet, statements about responsiveness, frame rate, difficulty, or camera quality would be speculation. Treat Nintendo’s feature descriptions as the confirmed preparation point.

Try the ocarina options without buying extra equipment

Nintendo says the remake supports several ways to play ocarina melodies. You can use button controls, try humming into the Switch 2’s built-in microphone, or play songs on a real ocarina. A physical instrument is optional; no announcement makes one a prerequisite.

Method Best for Preparation
Button controls Reliable play anywhere Learn the on-screen note prompts and keep the controller charged.
Humming into the microphone Players who want a voice-based experiment Use a quiet environment and confirm microphone permissions or prompts.
Real ocarina Players interested in physically practicing melodies Use any suitable instrument you already own; no model is required by Nintendo.

Nintendo has not published complete microphone accuracy requirements or a list of compatible instruments. If you buy an ocarina, treat it as a personal accessory, not a guaranteed gameplay upgrade.

What is ZELDA NOTES, and do you need Nintendo Switch Online?

ZELDA NOTES is a game-specific service in the Nintendo Switch App. Nintendo describes daily accomplishments, image-based challenges that ask you to find locations, and a way to play ocarina on a smart device. Nintendo UK says a compatible smart device is required and that a Nintendo Switch Online membership is not required to use ZELDA NOTES.

Checklist for using ZELDA NOTES

  1. Have a compatible smart device available.
  2. Install or update the Nintendo Switch App when Nintendo makes the service available for the remake.
  3. Follow the app’s pairing or account instructions for your Switch 2.
  4. Use the daily activities and image-based location challenges only if they add value to your play; they are optional.

Nintendo has not said that ZELDA NOTES is required for story progression, puzzles, or online play. Its functions should therefore be treated as companion features rather than core prerequisites.

Do you need Nintendo Switch Online or Nintendo Music?

The remake is listed as a Nintendo Switch 2 game, and Nintendo does not identify a Nintendo Switch Online membership as a requirement to buy or play it. Do not confuse this standalone remake with access to Nintendo 64 games through Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. That subscription provides access to the classic-game library while the membership is active; it is a separate way to play an older version, not a license for the remake.

Nintendo’s official Ocarina of Time playlist on Nintendo Music is also separate. Nintendo says listening through Nintendo Music requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership. You may use that playlist to revisit the soundtrack, but subscribing is not required for the remake itself.

Should you buy amiibo before launch?

Nintendo says existing Zelda-series amiibo can provide in-game extras. That makes compatible figures optional collectibles, not stated requirements for finishing the adventure. Nintendo has also identified Young Link and Young Zelda figures scheduled for 2027, after the listed November 2026 game release. Do not plan on those figures being available at launch or assume that they are needed to access the main game.

Use amiibo only if the extras interest you

  • Check the remake’s final amiibo compatibility list before buying a figure.
  • Buy only for the announced in-game extras or collection value.
  • Do not treat an amiibo bonus as essential progression content unless Nintendo explicitly says so.
  • Verify regional availability and release timing for any figure, especially the 2027 Young Link and Young Zelda releases.

A launch-week preparation checklist

  1. Confirm the hardware: make sure you have access to Nintendo Switch 2; compatibility with the original Switch is not established.
  2. Choose your play order: replay the original for familiarity, or begin with the remake for a fresh version.
  3. Check storage: reserve space for the provisional 27 GB digital estimate and verify the final eShop figure near release.
  4. Select a format: compare physical stock, delivery, packaging, and game-switching convenience with digital download access.
  5. Update the system: install current Switch 2 software and any game update before starting.
  6. Set your language: confirm that your preferred language is available in your region’s listing.
  7. Plan optional services: prepare a compatible smart device only if you want ZELDA NOTES.
  8. Decide on melody input: begin with buttons; microphone humming and a real ocarina are optional alternatives.
  9. Ignore unnecessary subscriptions: Nintendo Switch Online is not listed as a requirement for the remake, though it applies to separate classic-game and Nintendo Music services.
  10. Check extras: review amiibo compatibility and timing, remembering that the newly announced Young Link and Young Zelda figures are scheduled for 2027.

What remains unknown before release?

Several practical questions cannot be answered from Nintendo’s announcement alone:

  • Final download size and whether it changes from the current 27 GB estimate.
  • Performance targets, loading times, resolution, frame rate, and visual modes.
  • Exact button assignments, camera settings, accessibility options, and microphone behavior.
  • How extensively puzzles, dungeons, enemies, dialogue, and progression differ from the original.
  • Final physical-edition quantities, regional packaging, retailer stock, and pricing.
  • Whether the announced features receive additional details before launch.

Use Nintendo’s final product page and your regional eShop listing for those details as November 5 approaches. Until the game releases, avoid treating promotional descriptions as independent performance tests or assuming that an unannounced feature exists.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
