First check whether the black bars are part of the video frame or empty space added by the player. If they are baked into the footage, crop or reframe the video before streaming, then inspect the result for cut-off subjects, captions, or graphics. If they are outside the picture, changing the video may damage its composition without fixing how it appears on the device you care about.
Find out where the black bars come from
Pause on a representative frame and look closely at the boundary between the picture and the black area. Bars inside the video frame are encoded into the footage; bars outside the picture may be padding in the playback layout because the video and player have different aspect ratios. Only embedded bars require editing.
YouTube says its player adapts to each video’s aspect ratio and advises, “For best results, avoid adding padding or black bars directly to your video.” (YouTube Help, “Video resolution & aspect ratios – Computer,” checked 2026-10-03.) Before changing a file, check it on the viewing device and in the player layout you intend to use.
Choose whether to crop or preserve the full image
For ordinary horizontal viewing on a computer, 16:9 is YouTube’s standard player ratio. It is not a requirement that every video be forced into that shape: YouTube supports other aspect ratios and adapts its player. Choose the presentation that suits the source rather than stretching it to fill the screen.

- Crop or reframe: Use this when the bars are embedded and removing them is worth losing some picture at the edges. Keep important subjects, captions, and graphics inside the resulting frame.
- Keep the full frame: Use this when cropping would cut off meaningful content or change the intended composition. The complete image may sit within unused space, but the picture will not be distorted.
There is no universal crop setting: the right amount depends on the source footage and what appears near its edges. Compare the edited view with the uncropped original at the intended output size before committing to it.
Remove embedded bars before the video enters your stream
- Inspect the source: Pause on a representative frame and distinguish bars within the image from padding around it.
- Crop or reframe the footage: In your video editor, adjust the framing only enough to exclude embedded bars. The exact controls vary by editor; YouTube’s guidance does not prescribe a particular editing program or step-by-step crop tool.
- Check the whole sequence: Review the crop against the original, including frames where subjects move and any captions or graphics near the edges. Confirm that the crop remains acceptable throughout the footage.
- Export for delivery: YouTube’s recommended upload settings include MP4, H.264, progressive scan, and the same frame rate as the recording. These are encoding recommendations, not bar-removal steps.
- Preview the live output: In YouTube Live Control Room, check picture and audio and confirm the event is accessible before relying on a long stream. If you use local archiving, verify that archive files are being written.
Keep vertical live layout separate from source-video cropping
YouTube documents dual horizontal and vertical live streams in Live Control Room. The vertical version defaults to a center crop of the horizontal content, and creators can edit its layout, zoom, and position. Documented layout options include center crop, fit to phone width, and stacked.

These are choices for the live vertical composition, not a general repair for black bars already embedded in a prerecorded clip. Fix embedded bars in the source before streaming; configure the live layout separately if you are also sending a vertical version.
Check the stream setup without confusing it with the crop
Image framing and live-delivery settings solve different problems. YouTube advises previewing and monitoring an encoder stream, testing the setup, and leaving headroom in upload bandwidth. Its live encoder settings guidance recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. Keyframe frequency does not determine whether black bars are part of the source image.

Preparation and monitoring can help you catch problems, but YouTube’s guidance does not promise uninterrupted 24/7 uptime. Keep the edited video and the live stream configuration as separate checks when diagnosing a display issue.
Troubleshoot black bars and framing problems
- Bars remain after editing: Check whether the bars are actually player padding rather than pixels in the footage. Test the intended device and playback layout before cropping more aggressively.
- The subject or captions are cut off: The crop removes picture content as well as bars. Reframe less tightly, or preserve the full image if the lost content matters.
- The picture looks stretched: Do not enlarge one dimension independently to fill the frame. Preserve the intended proportions and accept unused space when that is preferable to distortion.
- The live vertical view looks wrong: Review the vertical layout, zoom, and position in Live Control Room. A default center crop may not suit horizontal footage; this layout setting does not alter bars baked into the source clip.
- The live image differs from the edited file: Preview and monitor the actual stream, and check the live configuration separately from the source edit.
Prepare prerecorded video for a long YouTube stream
Removing bars is only an editing decision; it does not grant permission to broadcast the footage or guarantee that a long stream will remain uninterrupted. Check that you have the rights to the video and audio, and test the intended live setup before depending on it. YouTube recommends advance preparation and testing; its guidance does not promise continuous uptime.
