Before a RuneScape launch, identify the character and game you plan to play, make sure you can access the account’s login email and recovery options, review security, and test your official client or launcher. The launch itself is unspecified here, so check its official announcement for any additional requirements rather than assuming a migration deadline, platform rule, or progress reset.
Start by identifying your character and login
List the RuneScape and Old School RuneScape characters you expect to use, and note how you currently sign in: with a legacy RuneScape login or a Jagex account. If you have characters in both games, distinguish them so you test the right one.
A Jagex account is the credential and character-management system; the Jagex Launcher is software for accessing Jagex games. Jagex Support says one Jagex account can hold up to 50 characters. That limit is a product feature, not a reason to change account setup if your current access works. See the Jagex Accounts FAQ.
Make sure you can recover the account
Confirm you can sign in to the email address associated with your account and that the email account itself is protected. Jagex recommends email two-step verification in its Old School RuneScape security guidance.

If you cannot sign in, use the official recovery route rather than links in unsolicited messages. The official Old School RuneScape return page and RuneScape return page direct returning players to account recovery and client downloads.
Decide whether to upgrade to a Jagex account
Jagex says upgrading an existing character replaces its old RuneScape login details with Jagex account credentials. Before starting, confirm that you can access the email you will use and review the current migration instructions in the Jagex Accounts FAQ. Do not treat an unspecified launch as a reason to migrate on a deadline: the FAQ says upgrading is currently optional, while noting Jagex plans to make Jagex accounts mandatory in the future.

- Consider upgrading if you want to manage several characters under one login or use a Jagex account’s security and recovery options.
- Check your access route first if you play through Steam or RuneLite. Jagex says RuneLite is available through the Launcher, and an imported character can still be played through Steam. The FAQ says only one character can be linked per Steam account and recommends Steam Guard.
- Do not assume every device is supported in the same way. The current FAQ lists the Launcher for Windows and macOS, says a Linux Launcher Beta is possible, and also describes access through mobile devices. Check the live FAQ for current platform details.
Review two-factor authentication and game security
Jagex account two-factor authentication is required by default through email codes. The FAQ also describes a mobile authenticator app and backup codes as additional options. Store backup codes somewhere secure and separate from the device you use to sign in, so a lost or unavailable device does not become your only recovery path.
For Old School RuneScape, set or review your Bank PIN and avoid unexpected login links sent by email or in-game message. Navigate directly to the official RuneScape site when you need to sign in; Jagex’s security page covers phishing and account protection.

Install and test the client before launch day
- Open the official return page for the game you intend to play: Old School RuneScape or RuneScape.
- Download or update the official client or Launcher for your device. If you use RuneLite, check Jagex’s current Launcher guidance for the supported access route.
- Sign in with the credentials that apply to your character and confirm that the correct character appears.
- If you use Steam, RuneLite, or a mobile device, test that specific route rather than assuming another client’s successful sign-in proves it is ready.
- Resolve access or recovery problems while you still have time to use Jagex’s official support paths.
Check the actual launch announcement
“A new game launch” does not identify a release, date, or set of requirements. Once you know which launch you mean, read its official announcement for any game-specific account setup, client compatibility, timing, or progression rules. Do not infer that an account migration is required, that a particular platform is supported, or that existing progress will reset unless the announcement says so.

Old School RuneScape players do not need an active subscription simply to log in and play; membership unlocks additional content, according to the official return page. The RuneScape return page also points players to a returning-player guide and client downloads. Decide about membership based on the content you want, not as a prerequisite for account preparation.
