How to Preserve and Display Original Video Game Artwork Safely

The safest way to enjoy original game box art, manuals, inserts and posters is to display a high-quality scan or photograph and keep the original in dark, stable storage. Paper fades, yellows, embrittles and discolors under light, and the Library of Congress says long-term or permanent display of paper-based materials is not recommended. If you must display an original, use archival framing, tightly control light, temperature and relative humidity (RH), and rotate the item rather than leaving it up indefinitely.

Choose the right preservation strategy first

Original game artwork is a light-sensitive paper object, even when it is part of a cardboard box or a glossy retail package. Manuals, maps, warranty cards, posters, stickers, sleeves and inserts can all suffer from the same cumulative damage. The National Archives summarizes the lowest-risk approach plainly: display copies and keep originals in a box. A color-managed scan or photograph gives you daily viewing access while the source remains protected.

Option Light and UV risk Environmental and physical protection Visibility and removal Permission issue
Original in a frame Highest risk because every hour of light adds exposure; UV-filtering glazing reduces but does not eliminate damage. Requires archival matting, a gap between art and glazing, stable RH and temperature, and secure mounting. Best visual authenticity, but removal must be careful and display should be short or rotated. Usually no publication issue for private viewing, but photographing and publicly sharing the image can raise copyright questions.
High-quality reproduction in a frame The reproduction may fade, but the collectible original stays dark. Can use the same archival framing methods; replacement is easy if the print degrades. Nearly as visible as an original and simple to remove or replace. Making, posting, selling or commercially using a reproduction may require permission from the copyright owner.
Original in dark storage with a digital surrogate Lowest light exposure and the best long-term choice. Archival enclosure, stable climate and careful handling protect the source. Digital file provides convenient reference; the original is available for occasional inspection. A scan is not automatically free to publish. Check rights before online distribution or commercial use.

For a valuable, rare or irreplaceable piece, use the third option. A reproduction is the sensible compromise when you want a permanent wall display. Reserve original display for short exhibitions, special events or controlled rotation.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Control light: the main cause of display damage

Light damage is cumulative and irreversible. It can fade printed colors, yellow paper, cause uneven discoloration and leave fibers brittle. Damage continues even when a change is too subtle to notice from week to week, so reducing total exposure matters more than choosing a single “safe” lamp.

Block direct daylight

  • Keep frames away from windows and skylights. Use blinds, curtains or UV-blocking window film when daylight enters the room.
  • Do not place a frame on an exterior wall that receives strong sun unless the window and display area are effectively shaded.
  • Never assume that ordinary household glass makes sunlight safe; it does not provide the level of control expected for sensitive paper.

Use low-intensity, filtered lighting

Use the lowest light level that still allows comfortable viewing and avoid fluorescent sources unless their ultraviolet output is filtered. Turn display lighting off whenever the room is unoccupied. For an institutional benchmark, National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) exhibit guidance specifies ultraviolet filtered to no more than 10 microwatts per lumen and exposure generally limited to 10 hours per day. That is an exhibit guideline, not a guarantee that a home display can remain illuminated continuously.

Rotate instead of leaving an original up permanently

There is no universal number of weeks that is safe for every paper, ink and lighting setup. A fragile, darkly printed or already-faded item should receive less exposure than a modern, stable print. Keep a display log with the installation date, lighting schedule and condition notes. Replace the original with the reproduction as soon as the planned viewing period ends, and return the source to dark storage.

Frame original artwork without creating new damage

Good framing prevents abrasion, pressure, sticking and contact with pollutants while allowing the piece to be removed without destruction. The frame should be a protective enclosure, not a permanent alteration.

Materials to specify

  • UV-filtering glass or acrylic: Choose glazing made for picture framing that filters ultraviolet radiation. Acrylic is lighter and safer where breakage is a concern; anti-static acrylic is preferable for friable media that could attract dust or loose particles.
  • Acid-free, pH-neutral mat board: Cotton-rag or chemically purified board is appropriate. Avoid ordinary wood-pulp cardboard, which can release acids as it ages.
  • Window mat or spacers: Create a physical air gap so the printed surface never touches the glazing. Condensation or static can otherwise make paper stick to glass or acrylic.
  • Reversible attachment: Use conservation mounting methods that support the sheet without pressure-sensitive tape, household glue or irreversible lamination. If you are not trained to mount a brittle, folded or valuable item, have a paper conservator do it.
  • Rigid backing and a sealed, stable frame: The backing should support the artwork without forcing it flat. A folded box panel may need a deeper frame and spacers rather than being pressed into a shallow one.

Frame an item step by step

  1. Inspect and document it. Photograph both sides, record dimensions, note folds, tears, stains, detached pieces and existing fading, and record where and when you obtained it.
  2. Make a reference surrogate. Create a high-resolution color scan or photograph before mounting. Keep the untouched master file separate from edited viewing copies.
  3. Select the enclosure. Match the frame depth to the object. Choose UV-filtering glazing, archival mat board and spacers or a window mat.
  4. Support the paper. Let the mount support the sheet evenly while accommodating existing folds. Do not force a curled or brittle piece flat.
  5. Install the glazing gap. Check from the side that no corner, raised ink, fold or loose fragment can touch the glazing.
  6. Close and secure the frame. Seal the back against dust, use hanging hardware rated for the complete weight, and add anti-tip protection where children, pets or vibration are present.
  7. Set the display conditions. Place it out of direct sun, use low-intensity filtered light, and switch lights off when the room is empty.
  8. Inspect on a schedule. Look for cockling, new discoloration, condensation, mold, loose pieces or frame pressure. Remove the item and seek advice if its condition changes.

Temperature and humidity targets that make sense at home

Stability is as important as the numerical reading. Repeated expansion and contraction can distort paper, loosen layers and stress adhesives. Avoid attics, garages, damp basements, rooms beside heaters or air-conditioner outlets, leaky areas and exterior walls with large temperature swings.

Context Temperature Relative humidity How to use the range
Home storage for video materials (NARA guidance, reviewed 2023) 55–70 °F 30–55% RH Use as a practical storage range, with gradual changes and protection from sunlight.
Institutional exhibit loan (NARA technical guidance) 65–75 °F 35–50% RH, plus or minus 5% Designed for controlled exhibit conditions; a typical home may not maintain this precision.
Mold-risk management (NARA guidance) Not specified as a separate target Preferably about 45–55% RH; keep below 65% as a ceiling Monitor routinely. Lower, stable RH reduces the chance of mold germination.

Install a digital hygrometer where the artwork is actually stored or displayed, not across the room. A data logger is useful when a basement, cabinet or display case has a history of swings. Correct the room’s source of moisture or heat rather than trying to compensate with a small device inside a sealed frame. Do not chase a perfect number with rapid adjustments.

What to do after water or mold exposure

Separate a wet or moldy item from the rest of the collection immediately. Do not brush active mold indoors, vacuum it with ordinary equipment or return it to a shared box. Isolate the item in a clean, ventilated area away from other games and obtain advice from a paper or audiovisual conservator. The below-65% RH ceiling is a prevention target, not a treatment for an item that is already wet or contaminated.

Store manuals, jackets and loose pieces safely

Storage is where an original should spend most of its life. Choose an enclosure that is clean, inert and large enough to avoid bending or compression.

Enclosures and orientation

  • Use acid-free envelopes, archival boxes or dedicated files for manuals, inserts, maps and loose artwork.
  • Keep a sheet flat when its structure permits. Support it fully when it is folded, brittle, embossed or built as a three-dimensional package component.
  • Do not overfill a box. Pressure from neighboring items can permanently crease corners and spine folds.
  • Separate paper from cartridges, discs or other media when that reduces abrasion, off-gassing or moisture risk. Do not disassemble a package if separation would destroy its identity or cause damage.
  • Keep an inventory record that links each component to its game, edition and provenance. A sleeve, sticker or map can be significant evidence of how the original package was assembled.

Safe handling habits

  • Wash and dry your hands before handling. Clean, dry hands are generally preferable to gloves for ordinary paper because they provide better control; use appropriate gloves when the material or a conservator requires them.
  • Support folded, thin or brittle pieces with both hands and a rigid board underneath.
  • Do not pull a sheet by a torn edge, drag it across a table or stack heavy objects on top.
  • Never use pressure-sensitive tape, household glue, lamination or an untested cleaning fluid. These treatments can stain, seal in dirt, leave adhesive residues or make later conservation harder.

Create a preservation-quality digital surrogate

A digital surrogate reduces handling and lets you display the artwork without exposing the original. The Library of Congress describes videogame collections as including cartridges, discs, packaging, documentation and magazines; preserving the paper component therefore requires more than saving a cover image from the internet.

  1. Prepare the object. Photograph its condition and provenance before opening a box or unfolding a manual. Do not flatten a structure that could tear.
  2. Capture all relevant views. Include front, back, spine, interior pages, inserts, maps, stickers, labels and important folds. Use even, diffuse light and a color reference when possible.
  3. Keep a high-resolution master. Preserve the untouched, color-managed scan or camera file. Make separate access copies for resizing, cropping or web display.
  4. Record metadata. Link the files to the game title, platform, edition, region, catalog or inventory number, source, date, photographer or scanner, equipment, resolution, color profile and condition notes.
  5. Use redundant storage. Keep more than one copy in separate locations and check that files can be opened. A single hard drive is not a preservation plan.
  6. Return the original to its enclosure. Use the digital file for routine reference, social posts or a wall print only after checking the rights situation.

The University of Michigan has described a workflow that packages game files, manuals, maps, supporting materials and metadata in an archival bag linked to a catalog record. The principle is useful for private collections: preserve the object and its descriptive context together, rather than saving an anonymous image that cannot be identified later.

Copyright: a scan is not automatically free to publish

Scanning an item you own gives you a useful preservation copy, but ownership of the paper does not automatically transfer copyright in the artwork, logos, characters or text. A Library of Congress rights statement says written permission from copyright owners is required for distribution, reproduction or other use of protected items beyond fair use or statutory exemptions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Private reference: Keeping a scan for your own catalog and using it to identify an item is different from distributing it publicly.
  • Online posting: Before uploading high-resolution scans to a website, forum or social platform, identify the copyright holder and consider the law of the jurisdiction involved.
  • Prints and merchandise: Selling prints, making posters or using cover art in advertising is commercial reproduction and generally needs permission unless a clear legal exception applies.
  • Low-resolution documentation: A small image used to identify an item may still be protected; resolution alone does not settle the legal question.

Keep a rights note with each digital file: what you own physically, who created the artwork if known, where the file may be shown, and any permission or license. When ownership is unclear, ask the rights holder or a qualified lawyer before commercial use.

How to compare acrylic, glass, storage and reproduction choices

Product descriptions often use terms such as “UV-filtering acrylic sheet for picture frames,” “acid-free archival box,” “archival polyester sleeve,” “museum mat board” and “digital hygrometer data logger.” These are useful search terms, but the exact performance, price and availability of any product must be verified for your region and use. Choose by the properties below rather than by marketing language alone.

Decision What to verify Why it matters
Glass or acrylic glazing Documented UV filtering, weight, breakage risk, static behavior and resistance to scratching. Both can protect better than ordinary glazing, but they differ in handling and in suitability for friable media.
Mat board Acid-free or pH-neutral composition, cotton-rag or chemically purified fibers, and adequate thickness. Inferior board can introduce acids and discoloration next to the artwork.
Sleeve or envelope Archival, inert material and a size that does not bend the item. Reduces abrasion and handling while avoiding pressure and chemical contact.
Humidity monitor Placement, calibration information, logging capability and readable alerts. Measurements are useful only when they reflect the microclimate around the collection.
Display versus storage Exposure schedule, light level, security, RH stability and ease of removal. A beautiful frame cannot compensate for unlimited light or an unstable room.

Special case: managing a complete game package

Collectors often want to preserve a box as a unified object while also protecting its individual contents. Treat the package as a group of elements: box, cartridge or disc, manual, map, poster, sticker sheet, registration card and other inclusions. Photograph the arrangement before separating anything, record which component belongs to which edition, and use enclosures that prevent pieces from rubbing together.

The Game Preservation Society’s 2026 manual describes element-based management and recommends paper materials around 50–55% humidity with UV shielding. That is a videogame-collection example, not a universal requirement; the broader NARA home-storage range and the stability principles above remain the safer baseline when conditions differ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The scale of the preservation problem explains why this discipline matters. The Strong National Museum of Play reported 25,000 imperiled artifacts in its 2023 Digital Preservation Handbook, including games created before 2005 on endangered media, and its collection page describes more than 60,000 artifacts and hundreds of thousands of archival materials. Your collection may be smaller, but the same risks—light, unstable climate, handling and lost context—apply.

A practical maintenance schedule

At every installation or removal

  • Photograph the item and note its condition.
  • Check that the artwork is not touching glazing and that the frame hardware is secure.
  • Record the date, room, RH, temperature and lighting schedule.

Monthly while on display

  • Look for fading, cockling, new stains, condensation, loose fragments or mold.
  • Confirm that blinds, lamps and timers still limit exposure.
  • Check that the frame has not shifted, tipped or developed pressure points.

After returning it to storage

  • Use the surrogate for ordinary viewing and leave the original enclosed.
  • Review the storage log for humidity spikes or leaks.
  • Update the inventory if a component, sleeve or digital file has changed location.

When to call a conservator

Professional advice is appropriate for active mold, water damage, flaking ink, severe brittleness, stuck pages, pressure-sensitive tape, unknown coatings, valuable prototypes and any item that cannot be safely unfolded or mounted. A conservator can design a reversible support, test materials and advise on treatment without sacrificing evidence of the original package. Do not attempt aggressive cleaning or adhesive removal simply to make an item look better for display.
