To keep subtitles available on a YouTube 24/7 stream, deliver them as live captions—not merely as a subtitle track inside the video file. YouTube documents two live-caption routes: send embedded EIA 608/CEA 708 captions from your encoder, or use supported caption software that sends captions over HTTP POST. For selectable subtitles on the archived video, keep the subtitle file separately and add it in YouTube Studio. An ordinary SRT, ASS, WebVTT, or other subtitle track in a source file is not, by itself, YouTube’s documented live-caption method.
First decide where viewers need the subtitles
“Preserve subtitles” can mean three different things, and each requires a different path:
- Visible text baked into the picture: the words are part of the video image. The YouTube guidance cited here does not specify a burn-in command or an encoding application, so verify that workflow in the documentation for your chosen software.
- Selectable captions during the live stream: captions must be delivered to YouTube through its documented live-caption workflow.
- Selectable subtitles on the uploaded or archived video: retain a timed subtitle file and add it to the video in YouTube Studio.
YouTube says it transcodes incoming live video into viewer formats, but that does not establish that an arbitrary subtitle track inside the source file will survive or remain selectable. Treat video encoding and caption delivery as separate tasks. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance
Prepare the subtitle asset before encoding
Keep a separate original
Save an untouched copy of each subtitle file and associate it with the matching video asset. Do not rely on a video-only re-encode, playlist, or stream archive to preserve a sidecar file or an in-container subtitle stream.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose the live caption path
YouTube’s live caption requirements describe two options: captions embedded in the video, or captions sent through supported software that can send HTTP POSTs. For the embedded option, configure the Live Control Room’s closed-caption setting for Embedded 608/708 and configure the encoder to output EIA 608/CEA 708 captions. YouTube says the embedded workflow currently supports one caption track.
If you use caption software to send captions over HTTP POST, verify that the software is supported and that its setup works with your encoder and production. Do not assume that an ordinary subtitle file is automatically converted into a compatible live-caption feed.

Test captions before starting a long-running stream
- Make a short test stream. Use the same source media, encoder, caption configuration, and delivery route planned for the 24/7 broadcast.
- Check the live preview. Confirm that the captions appear at the right times and are readable. Test the selectable caption control from a viewer’s perspective rather than assuming that a subtitle track in the local file is being sent.
- Check language-track needs. The documented embedded 608/708 path supports one caption track. If you need more than one selectable live language, confirm that your chosen caption delivery setup supports the requirement before relying on it.
- Keep the uploaded-video path separate. If the archive also needs selectable subtitles, retain the timed file for that step; a successful live caption test does not prove that the resulting archive contains a separate subtitle track.
YouTube’s encoder setup instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That archive behavior is not a guarantee that a separate selectable subtitle track will be retained; verify the resulting video.
Add selectable subtitles to the uploaded or archived video
For a video in YouTube Studio, use the Add subtitles & captions workflow. YouTube documents uploading a subtitle file with timing, auto-syncing a transcript, or entering captions manually. Review the language and synchronization after adding the track. Some subtitle formats can also carry positioning and style information.

This Studio workflow is distinct from live caption delivery. Adding subtitles to a video does not send captions into a live broadcast that is already running.
Keep ingest settings separate from subtitle handling
YouTube’s video ingest recommendations and subtitle behavior answer different questions. Codec, bitrate, resolution, and stream protocol affect how video reaches YouTube; they do not demonstrate that a particular SRT, ASS, WebVTT, or in-container track will pass through a re-encode or appear as live captions. Check the documentation for the exact media container and encoder, then test the output.

If using HLS
YouTube’s HLS setup guidance specifies TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte-range support. YouTube also states that HLS has higher latency than RTMP. These are ingest requirements, not a subtitle-preservation guarantee.

| What you see | Likely issue | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The local video has subtitles, but the live stream does not. | The source subtitle track is not being delivered as YouTube live captions. | Configure Embedded 608/708 output or use supported caption software sending HTTP POSTs; confirm captions in a short live test. |
| Captions are absent after enabling the embedded option. | The Live Control Room setting and encoder output may not match, or the encoder may not be sending EIA 608/CEA 708 captions. | Check both configurations and retest the complete path. |
| The live captions work, but the archived video has no selectable subtitle track. | Live caption delivery does not establish that the archive contains a separate subtitle file. | Add the retained timed subtitle file through YouTube Studio and review synchronization. |
| A second live language is missing. | YouTube documents one caption track for the embedded 608/708 workflow. | Confirm whether your chosen supported caption-software route meets the language requirement; do not assume the embedded path offers multiple tracks. |
| The playlist or re-encoded file lost its subtitle stream. | The handling of the specific format, container, and encoder has not been established by YouTube’s cited live-ingest guidance. | Consult the encoder’s documentation, preserve the original subtitle file, and test the exact asset and output before using it in a long-running stream. |
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube 24/7 stream built from uploaded videos, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud: upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos; it does not provide a camera-based live feed. Its service does not remove the need to configure and verify live captions or add a subtitle file to an archive when you need one.
