You can aim for continuous viewing, but YouTube does not guarantee an indefinite broadcast—and a stream longer than 12 hours may not be saved as a complete replay. Plan for monitoring, rights clearance and, if you need an archive, shorter sessions with local recording.
Before you set up the stream
Check YouTube livestream eligibility
Your channel must be verified and, according to YouTube’s livestreaming tips, must not have had livestream restrictions in the previous 90 days. If you have never livestreamed, activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before you plan to go live. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
Clear the footage and audio
Use video and audio you own or have permission to use for the intended worldwide YouTube broadcast. YouTube’s livestream terms require you to have the necessary rights, including music licensing rights, and to follow its Community Guidelines and applicable laws.
YouTube scans livestreams for third-party content. A match may replace the stream with a placeholder, and continued use can lead to interruption or termination. If you have permission to use material but it is still identified by Content ID, the rights holder may need to add your channel to its allowlist for the live stream to proceed without interruption. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams before using any third-party clips or music.

Build a looping fireplace playlist in OBS
Install OBS and VLC
Install OBS Studio and VLC on the computer that will send the stream. OBS’s Media Sources guide says the VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed. If you use 64-bit OBS, install the matching 64-bit version of VLC.
Add the clips and set the loop
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene you plan to stream.
- Add your fireplace video files to that source’s playlist in the order you want viewers to see them.
- Enable Loop Playlist so playback starts again after the last clip.
- Leave shuffle disabled if you want the playlist to play in a predictable order.
- Preview the scene and listen to the audio. Check that the video fills the intended canvas and that transitions, sound levels and any gaps between clips are acceptable.
OBS and VLC create the repeating feed; they do not make YouTube keep it online by themselves. The computer running OBS must remain on and connected while it is the encoder.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live and go live
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream. Follow YouTube’s instructions for creating a live stream with an encoder.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that event into OBS’s stream settings. You can review YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not share it publicly; if it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio before continuing.
- Start the OBS output and wait for YouTube’s preview. Check the picture and audio there before starting the public broadcast.
- Once live, verify that the stream is accessible from your channel or watch page and on mobile. Keep an eye on the feed and respond if OBS, the connection or YouTube interrupts it.
YouTube’s setup and tips explain how to start and check an encoder stream, but do not promise uninterrupted operation for an indefinite broadcast or specify a guaranteed maximum continuous runtime. Treat 24/7 as an operating goal, not a platform guarantee. See YouTube’s livestreaming tips.
Plan separately for continuous viewing and replay
A continuous broadcast is not the same as a dependable replay archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Do not count on YouTube to split a single 24-hour broadcast into complete recordings. Its guidance is in Archive live streams and the encoder setup help.

- If preserving a replay matters, plan deliberate shorter broadcasts rather than relying on one long session.
- Record a local backup if you need a copy, and confirm that the recording is being saved.
- Keep the archive plan separate from the playlist loop: restarting or scheduling sessions can affect how viewers encounter the stream.
Equipment and operating trade-offs
The documented software setup is OBS with VLC. YouTube also describes hardware encoders as an option for higher-production streams, but the cited setup guidance does not specify a required computer model or minimum specification for a fireplace loop. Start with suitable equipment you already have; a dedicated computer or hardware encoder is optional, not an uptime guarantee.

A stream that loops correctly is not automatically eligible for monetization. YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply to livestreams and say repetitive or mass-produced content falls under its “inauthentic content” policy. Whether a particular channel or fireplace stream passes review is not established by that policy; do not assume repetition will qualify.

Troubleshoot common problems
- VLC Video source is missing or will not load: Confirm VLC is installed. With 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC, as specified in the OBS Media Sources guide.
- The playlist stops after one pass: Reopen the VLC Video source properties and check that Loop Playlist is enabled.
- Clips play in an unexpected order: Check the playlist order and turn shuffle off if you need a predictable sequence.
- YouTube does not show a preview: Confirm that the correct stream URL and key for the selected event are in OBS, and that the encoder output has started. Keep the key private; reset it if it may have been compromised. See YouTube’s stream settings help.
- Livestreaming is unavailable: Verify the channel and check for livestream restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so an immediate start may not be possible. See YouTube’s livestreaming tips and encoder setup help.
- The stream is interrupted after a rights match: Review YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance. Remove material you cannot use; if the material is licensed, ask the rights holder whether your channel needs Content ID allowlisting.
