Each points to a different cause. A loop setting repeats content, but it cannot remove silence that is already in the recording or guarantee a seamless transition.
Locate the gap before changing settings
Listen for the exact moment the audio drops out and note what is happening then. Is one track ending and another starting? Is a single sound file reaching its end and starting over? Does the gap happen unpredictably during a network-fed stream, or when playback changes device or format? These are different problems, so a setting that helps one may not affect another.
- Between tracks: check the player’s transition controls.
- At a repeated file’s boundary: inspect the file and the source’s loop behavior.
- During network playback: investigate buffering and stream transitions.
- When output changes: check whether the audio device or playback pipeline is being reset.
Remove pauses between tracks in Spotify
Spotify’s Gapless playback setting is intended to remove gaps or pauses between tracks. It is different from Crossfade: Crossfade overlaps the end of one track with the beginning of the next, changing the sound. For continuous sleep ambience, try Gapless playback before Crossfade if you want tracks to meet without an overlap.
Automix is another distinct transition feature. Spotify says transition settings cannot be configured while using Spotify Connect. On Windows, Spotify’s Exclusive Mode takes control of the selected audio device; other apps cannot play through that device, and Spotify says Automix and Crossfade are disabled in this mode. If controls are unavailable or behave differently than expected, check whether Connect or Exclusive Mode is active.

Set the right loop control in OBS Studio
In OBS, the setting depends on whether the source is one file or a playlist. The Media Source has a Loop property that specifies whether the file plays again after playback completes. For a list of items, OBS’s VLC Video source has a Loop Playlist property; it also provides Network caching (ms).
- One file repeating: use a Media Source and check its Loop property.
- Several items in sequence: use a VLC Video source and check Loop Playlist.
- Network-fed VLC playback: inspect Network caching (ms) if interruptions happen during playback.
These controls determine whether content repeats or a playlist cycles. They do not guarantee that the audio itself has a seamless boundary, and OBS documentation does not claim that looping removes silence encoded in a file.

Check the recording’s start and end
If the silence consistently occurs as a single file wraps around, inspect the audio near both ends. A quiet tail at the end, a quiet lead-in at the start, or a natural fade can sound like a gap even when looping is working correctly. A loop control cannot cut those parts out. If you edit the file, make sure the new start and end meet naturally for the particular sound; abrupt cuts can replace a pause with a click or an unnatural change in ambience.
Compressed audio and transitions between files can be more demanding than simply replaying a source. GStreamer’s gapless-playback design documentation describes the need for well-defined audio boundaries, buffering the next file before the current one ends, and changing pipelines without pausing. It also notes that edge cases and bugs are not uncommon. That is why a loop or gapless setting alone is not proof that every file will play seamlessly.

Troubleshoot gaps in a network or live playback pipeline
If the silence is intermittent rather than tied to a track or file boundary, focus on the playback route. GStreamer’s pipeline design overview discusses buffering for network sources and continuity across some input changes when decoders are compatible. Its gapless-playback guidance also identifies pipeline changes and audio-device resets as relevant conditions. These are diagnostic leads, not a universal buffer value or codec setting that fixes every stream.
- Note whether the interruption coincides with a file or stream change, a network slowdown, or a change of audio output device.
- If you control the playback pipeline, check whether it buffers upcoming network audio and whether a source or format change forces a pause or device reset.
- Test the complete playback route under the conditions you actually use, including the same output device and the same loop or playlist.
If you use Spotify in a browser and the issue is that playback will not start or resume, rather than a gap during already-running audio, browser autoplay restrictions may be relevant. Spotify’s Web Playback SDK documentation notes that some browsers require user interaction to trigger playback. It does not establish autoplay policy as a cause of gaps in ongoing playback.
