To keep lecture videos playing continuously on a 24/7 YouTube livestream, run them through one encoder using a playlist with looping enabled. In OBS Studio, add the files to a VLC Video source and turn on Loop Playlist; separately, connect OBS to YouTube Live with the stream URL and stream key. Looping prevents the playlist from simply ending, but it does not guarantee gap-free transitions or protect against encoder, network, or YouTube delivery interruptions. Test the real files and monitor the live feed before relying on it.
Why gaps happen—and what looping does
A continuous lecture stream has two separate jobs: media playback and delivery to YouTube. The playback source must move from one file to the next and restart the playlist when it reaches the end. The encoder must remain connected to YouTube Live and send that feed. A looping playlist addresses the first job; it cannot by itself keep a computer, encoder, network connection, or YouTube stream from failing.
OBS documents playlist playback and looping, but does not promise frame-perfect or gap-free transitions for arbitrary files. The only dependable way to judge whether your particular lectures cut cleanly is to test the exact files, order, audio, and encoder output in a private or unlisted stream before broadcasting to viewers.
Set up a looping lecture playlist in OBS
- Install VLC with the matching architecture. OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC. The OBS guide specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. Install VLC before adding the source, then reopen OBS if needed. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
- Add a VLC Video source. In the OBS scene you intend to stream, use Sources → + → VLC Video. Create a new source, then add the lecture files to its playlist in the order you want them played. The VLC Video source supports multiple files as a playlist.
- Enable the loop control. In the VLC Video source properties, enable Loop Playlist. This tells the playlist to restart after it reaches the end. For just one video, an OBS Media Source has an individual Loop control; it repeats that file rather than cycling a multi-file playlist.
- Check playback and audio in OBS. Play through file changes, not just the first few seconds of the first lecture. Confirm every file opens, audio is present at an appropriate level, and the source remains active through transitions and the playlist restart.
- Connect OBS to YouTube Live. Configure the stream in YouTube Live Control Room, then set OBS’s streaming output to YouTube using the server URL and stream key provided for that stream. Treat the stream key like a password: YouTube describes it as the stream’s password and address. Keep one ongoing encoder feed rather than ending and creating a new YouTube live event at every lecture boundary. See YouTube’s live stream settings and encoder setup guide.
- Preview before making it public. Start the encoder and inspect YouTube’s preview. Check the stream from the channel or watch page and on a mobile device, as well as in OBS. YouTube recommends setting up encoders at least two hours before an event and starting them at least 15 minutes ahead so there is time to check the preview. These are preparation recommendations, not a guarantee of uninterrupted delivery.
Reduce the risk of interruptions during a long stream
Test transitions, not just the playlist setting
Observe several file boundaries and one complete playlist cycle in a private or unlisted stream. Listen for silence, clipped words, overlapping audio, or volume changes; watch for black frames, unexpected pauses, or a source that stops. If a boundary is unacceptable, check the source’s playback behavior and the files themselves, then test the revised playlist again. Looping is a restart instruction, not a promise that the end of one encoded file will join the next without a visible or audible pause.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Allow upload bandwidth headroom
YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. If primary and backup feeds both need bandwidth at the same time, its guidance says to account for the primary feed, backup feed, and that headroom. This is YouTube’s recommendation, not a universal guarantee: validate the connection at the actual streaming location and account for other devices sharing it. YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Plan and test encoder failover
For an operation where an encoder or connection failure would be costly, plan a backup encoder workflow and test it before the broadcast. YouTube recommends testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, then checking that the player rolls over to the backup. Do not assume a backup is working until you have observed the switchover. YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events, but no particular model is established as right for every setup.

Record a local archive
Keep local recording enabled and verify that the file is growing and intact. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all; its guidance recommends keeping a local archive as a backup. For a 24/7 stream, use storage sized for the recording bitrate and the retention period you need. An external SSD is one possible storage choice, not a YouTube requirement. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
Choose the playback approach that fits your setup

| StreamNeo | You want uploaded videos to keep a YouTube channel live from the cloud. | Always-on cloud streaming, any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and the first day free. Upload, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; playback runs without keeping a home computer on. See StreamNeo. |
| OBS VLC Video playlist | You want a graphical, ordered list of local media and a playlist loop control. | Requires VLC. Check that all files and audio play, the source stays active, and real transitions are acceptable. |
| OBS Media Source with Loop | You need to repeat one lecture file or a single combined program. | Loops an individual file; it is not a multi-file playlist. |
| Hardware encoder with backup workflow | You run a higher-production operation that needs encoder redundancy. | Choose based on verified failover behavior and your workflow. Test the backup path; no specific model is endorsed here. |
Troubleshoot gaps and playback failures
- The playlist stops after its last file: Confirm Loop Playlist is enabled on the VLC Video source, then observe a full cycle. If there is only one file, use the Media Source’s Loop option instead.
- A file will not play or has no audio: Check that VLC is installed and matches OBS’s architecture, then test the file in the source and inspect its audio in OBS before going live.
- There is a pause, black frame, or audio break between lectures: Looping does not guarantee seamless cuts. Test the exact transition in a private or unlisted stream; check the files, ordering, playback, and audio at that boundary.
- The stream disappears even though the playlist is still playing: Check whether the encoder remains connected and the network is stable. Confirm the server URL and stream key, review YouTube’s preview, and test any backup encoder workflow rather than assuming it will take over.
- The YouTube archive is missing or incomplete: Do not depend on YouTube’s automatic archive for a stream exceeding 12 hours. Check local recording during the broadcast and verify the saved file afterward.
