How to Set Up Loudness Normalization for a 24/7 YouTube Music Radio Stream

Normalize before encoding, measure integrated loudness and true peaks, and treat EBU targets as references—not verified YouTube live-stream requirements.

Normalize audio before it reaches the live encoder: measure integrated loudness with a loudness-aware meter, apply a live-capable processor such as FFmpeg’s loudnorm, and check true peaks and track transitions in the encoded output. There is no verified numeric loudness target published for YouTube continuous live streams in the sources cited here, so treat broadcast standards as references—not YouTube rules.

Choose where normalization happens

The right processing point depends on whether your playlist is fixed or changes while the stream is running.

Prepare a stable music library offline

If the same files will be used repeatedly, measure and prepare them before broadcast. This lets you compare levels across the library and reduces the work required in the live chain. FFmpeg documents loudnorm double-pass operation for files.

Process a changing playlist live

If tracks enter the playlist dynamically, use a processor that can normalize continuously before the encoder. FFmpeg documents single-pass loudnorm for livestream use. Keep the order clear: source or playlist, loudness processing, then live encoder.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose a target without mistaking it for a YouTube requirement

Set an explicit operating target and document why you chose it. The European Broadcasting Union’s EBU R 128 version 5.0, published 21 November 2023, recommends average programme loudness of -23 LUFS. EBU R 128 S2 version 3 (November 2023) gives -23 LUFS as a baseline streaming level, recommending that programmes be streamed unchanged in that scenario.

EBU R 128 S2 also discusses a conditional alternative: when metadata is not used to manage device gain and content dynamics, and the broadcaster wants to control dynamic treatment before distribution, interim distribution loudness may be raised to the -20 to -16 LUFS range. These are context-specific EBU recommendations, not evidence of YouTube’s live-stream target. The sources cited here do not establish whether YouTube normalizes continuous live streams or publish a numeric target for them. In particular, do not treat the often-repeated -14 LUFS figure as a verified YouTube live rule.

Set loudness, dynamics and true-peak controls

FFmpeg’s loudnorm exposes an integrated loudness target, loudness-range target and maximum true-peak target. Set them deliberately for your programme rather than accepting a default without checking what it does to the music.

  • Integrated loudness: the overall perceived level across a programme or measurement window. Use it to judge broad consistency, not to infer peak safety.
  • Loudness range: a control related to the programme’s dynamic variation. Avoid compressing or flattening music more than needed to make the playlist listenable.
  • Maximum true peak: a separate ceiling for reconstructed peaks. Choose headroom for your encoding chain and material; the cited sources do not establish a YouTube-mandated ceiling.

Listen to both the quietest and loudest tracks, as well as transitions between them. A playlist can meet an average target and still sound uneven from song to song, or lose musical contrast if dynamics are over-controlled.

Measure the processed stream correctly

Use an analyzer that reports integrated loudness and true peak. OBS’s standard mixer uses a sample-peak programme meter; its VU display is an RMS measure over 300 ms, not an integrated LUFS meter. Those bars are useful for watching level, but they cannot verify an integrated LUFS target. OBS also warns that output above 0 dBFS clips; 0 dBFS is a digital maximum, not a loudness target.

  1. Measure representative material. Include quiet and loud tracks, different styles, and playlist transitions. For a prepared library, check both individual files and the sequence as a programme.
  2. Apply normalization before encoding. Use a live-capable processor for changing playlists or prepare stable files offline. Do not confuse the encoder’s output meter with an integrated loudness measurement.
  3. Monitor the actual encoded output. Check the signal after the final encoding stage, not only the processor input. Record observed integrated loudness and peaks.
  4. Adjust from what you hear and measure. If transitions are audibly inconsistent or peaks approach clipping, revisit the processor’s loudness, dynamics and peak settings, then validate the encoded output again.

Troubleshoot common loudness problems

The OBS meter looks safe, but songs still sound uneven

OBS’s normal mixer display is not an integrated LUFS meter. Measure the playlist with a loudness-aware analyzer and assess transitions by listening; matching sample peaks alone does not establish perceived consistency.

The stream clips even though average loudness is on target

Integrated loudness and peak headroom are different checks. Inspect true peaks after processing and encoding, then lower the peak ceiling or adjust processing to preserve headroom. Keep the output below 0 dBFS to avoid digital clipping.

The music sounds unnaturally flat

The processor may be reducing dynamics more than the playlist needs. Revisit the loudness-range and peak-management settings, compare quiet and loud passages, and listen to full transitions rather than judging only a meter reading.

A setting advertised as a YouTube target does not match the standards guidance

Do not assume a platform-specific number is authoritative without a current YouTube source that applies to continuous live streams. EBU’s figures are broadcast and streaming references with stated conditions; they do not establish YouTube’s internal normalization behavior.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a prerecorded 24/7 YouTube music stream, StreamNeo can keep an uploaded recording or playlist looping from the cloud after you upload it, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. StreamNeo streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
