Start with the audience and experience you are offering, compare genuinely similar games, and use your financial model to check whether possible prices can sustain the project. Development cost helps define what the game needs to earn; it does not, by itself, tell you what players will pay.
What should your indie game cost?
Choose a price that makes sense for the game’s audience, scope, perceived value, and commercial plan—not one derived solely from how much it cost to make. The answer depends on details such as genre, playtime, replayability, production presentation, platform, and demand. Without those details, a single dollar figure would be guesswork.
Steam’s pricing guidance advises developers to research comparable games and the value customers receive, and cautions against trying to win simply by undercutting competitors. Its Steamworks pricing guidance is platform-specific, so check it directly before setting prices or discounts.
Separate the financial floor from the market price
Build a private model of what the project needs to earn. Include development and launch costs, a realistic allowance for ongoing support, and the fact that the studio does not necessarily retain every dollar of a sale. Platform fees, refunds, taxes, regional sales mix, and discounts can all affect net revenue. Their actual values depend on the project and platform; there is no universal cost-recovery formula in the sources cited here.

Use that model to understand which sales outcomes are viable, not to conclude that customers owe the game a particular price. If the price the market appears to support would not sustain the project, that is a business constraint to address—not proof that the market will pay more.
Define the audience and the value proposition
Be specific about who the game is for, what experience or desire it serves, and what makes it distinct. A price is easier to assess when the offer is clear: prospective buyers should be able to understand the scope and appeal from the store page, trailer, screenshots, demo, and community communication.
Consider the full offer rather than playtime alone. Replayability, multiplayer, production values, and the quality of presentation can shape perceived value. Also consider whether the game’s commercial plan includes later downloadable content, in-app spending, or a sequel; those possibilities can make reaching and retaining players valuable beyond the first sale. Build a comparison set that actually fits
Compare games that overlap meaningfully with yours in audience and experience. A useful comparison set gives context; it is not a command to match one competitor’s price. Record the details that explain differences in value and positioning.
- Current full price and observed discount patterns.
- Content, playtime claims, and replayability.
- Multiplayer features and the importance of an active player base.
- Reviews and what players say they received for their money.
- Store-page presentation, production values, audience, and business model.
- Whether a game is in Early Access or has meaningful later purchases.
Steam recommends studying games of a similar nature and reading customer reviews to understand the value buyers report receiving. Avoid anchoring on a single outlier or treating the cheapest comparable game as a price ceiling.
Test the price hypothesis against the offer
Before launch, check whether potential players understand what the game is and why it may be worth its price. Store-page clarity, a trailer, screenshots, a demo, and feedback from an engaged community can help reveal whether the offer is connecting. Demand signals need interpretation: Unity and IndieBI caution that old wishlists may be less likely to convert than active playtesting or an engaged pre-release community.

If you are deciding between real price options, compare the trade-offs that matter to your game:
- Units versus revenue per unit: a lower price may help reach more buyers, but the unit increase required to compensate is not guaranteed.
- Price sensitivity and discount expectations: consider whether your audience is likely to buy at launch or wait for a promotion.
- Perceived value: assess whether the price fits the scope and presentation players can see before purchase.
- Community health: for multiplayer games, player count can affect the experience itself.
- Future sales: consider how the first purchase relates to DLC, in-app spending, or a sequel.
No universally validated formula in the cited sources can predict price elasticity for an individual indie game. Unity’s guide reports historical anonymized performance data from more than 140,000 games, DLCs, and other products through IndieBI, but cautions that broad insights do not predict results for a particular title.
Plan Steam prices, regions, and promotions together
If you sell on Steam, the launch price affects the promotions you can offer later. Steam’s documentation describes minimum base-price and transaction thresholds; setting a very low price can limit discounting or leave a product unavailable in some currencies. It also says ordinary price changes should wait until 30 days after release. These are Steam-specific rules and may change, so verify the live documentation before launch.

Do not assume that converting the home-region price using a current exchange rate is the right regional price. Steam offers conversion tools based on exchange rates, purchasing power, or multiple variables, and developers may also set regional prices themselves. Review the resulting prices and platform thresholds by currency as part of the launch plan, rather than treating regional pricing as an automatic afterthought.

Review sales alongside store-page conversion, customer feedback, refund patterns, review sentiment, and promotion performance. Units alone cannot tell you whether a price is working: weak sales could reflect the price, unclear store messaging, a mismatch with the intended audience, or insufficient demand.
Use the evidence to decide what to change. A price adjustment cannot fix an offer that fails to reach or communicate with its audience, while a strong offer may still need a different promotional or regional approach. Make changes with the platform’s timing and discount constraints in mind.

Use market estimates with care
Third-party sales and revenue data can provide context, but they are estimates rather than audited sales figures. Video Game Insights explains its estimation methods and cautions readers to treat its figures as estimates: Steam Sales Estimator. Do not treat an estimate as a verified result or a promise of what your own game will earn.
Likewise, historical examples are useful for concepts, not current benchmarks. Consalvo and Paul’s 2017 discussion described no agreed standard and price points from free through $30 in its research context; that dated observation is not a present-day market distribution. A 2017 article about Heat Signature reported that its Supporters Edition accounted for 20% of initial-release revenue. That is one historical edition strategy, not a target for current launches.
