Turn the player off, disconnect every cable, place it on a clean soft cloth, remove loose dust with a blower, then wipe the gold-plated surface lightly with a clean microfiber or eyeglass cloth. Do not use alcohol, naphtha, paint thinner, abrasive products, or a sprayed liquid on the player. If crackling comes from a detachable plug or jack, treat that as a separate contact-cleaning problem rather than polishing the chassis.
The safest cleaning method at a glance
Gold plating is a thin decorative and conductive finish, not a scratch-proof coating. Sony’s Help Guide for gold-plated players warns that “The gold-plated parts are more sensitive than regular plated parts.” The safest approach is therefore to use the least aggressive method that solves the visible problem.

- Power down completely. Turn the player off, unplug the charger, remove headphones and other cables, and disconnect any detachable accessories.
- Prepare a protected work surface. Put a clean, soft, lint-free cloth or protective mat on a stable tabletop. Sony specifically recommends working on a tabletop covered with a soft cloth to prevent scratches while handling a gold-plated model.
- Blow away loose dust. Use a manual camera blower or a controlled electronics air duster before touching the finish. Dust particles can act like grit when dragged across the coating.
- Wipe with a clean, soft cloth. A high-pile microfiber cloth or eyeglass-lens cloth is the default choice. Use light strokes and turn to a clean section frequently.
- Stop when the surface is clean. Repeated polishing does not improve a delicate plated finish and can increase wear.
- For stuck-on grime, check the exact model manual. Sony permits a cloth slightly moistened with mild detergent for a very dirty player, but the cloth must not be wet and no water may enter the player.
Never spray cleaner directly on the player. If the manual authorizes a liquid, put a small amount on the cloth, keep it barely damp, and keep it away from seams, controls, sockets and display edges.
Why gold-plated players need gentler handling
Gold does not rust in the way many base metals do, but a plated audio player still has a vulnerable surface. The visible layer can be marked by a hard particle, worn by repeated rubbing or affected by a solvent that attacks the underlying finish or adhesive. Sony states that its NW-WM1ZM2 uses gold plating with a purity of about 99.7 percent gold (Sony, 2022); that purity figure does not make the exterior immune to mechanical damage.

Three risks should guide every cleaning decision:
- Abrasion: grit, rough fabric, paper towels, brushes and polishing compounds can leave fine lines or remove plating.
- Chemical incompatibility: a solvent that is acceptable for another metal, plastic or connector may discolor or damage this player’s finish.
- Liquid intrusion: moisture can travel through buttons, ports, seams and display borders into electronics.
Cleaning should remove contamination, not make the surface look brighter through aggressive rubbing. A barely touched, slightly dusty player is safer than a heavily polished one.
Set up the player before touching the finish
Shut down and isolate the electronics
Use the operating system’s normal power-off command, then wait for the display and indicators to go dark. Disconnect the charging cable and headphones. Cleaning while a cable is attached makes it easier to pull the player off the table or force debris into a jack.
Choose a clean work area
Work away from food, drinks, paper dust and loose metal objects. A folded lint-free cloth or soft electronics mat should cover the tabletop. Do not place the player directly on a bare desk, wooden surface or hard case while wiping. Inspect the cloth first; a single trapped grain of sand defeats the purpose of using microfiber.
Wash or replace contaminated cloths
A cloth used on a screen, keyboard, polishing compound or oily household surface is not clean enough for gold plating. Use a fresh cloth, or launder the microfiber according to its care instructions and make sure it contains no hard debris. Avoid fabric softener residue, which can leave a film.
Step-by-step exterior cleaning
1. Remove loose dust without contact
Hold the player securely over the padded surface. Use a manual blower in short bursts across the face, sides and trim. For an air duster, use controlled bursts from a distance recommended for electronics and keep the can upright. The objective is to lift particles away, not drive them into openings.
Do not use your breath. Exhaled moisture can settle around controls and sockets, and a forceful breath may move dust into a seam.

2. Dry-wipe the broad surfaces
Fold the microfiber or lens cloth so several clean faces are available. Rest only the cloth on the housing and make slow, straight passes with almost no pressure. Follow the contours of the player rather than scrubbing in circles. After each pass, inspect the cloth and turn it to an unused section so collected grit is not returned to the finish.

Use separate passes for the back, sides, trim and logo. Gold-plated trim may have edges that catch fibers; do not pull the cloth across an edge with force.
3. Clean around controls and openings carefully
Keep the cloth flat around buttons, switches, card slots, jacks and display borders. Do not push fabric into a socket or seam. If dust is visible at an opening, blow it away from the opening first. A cotton swab can shed fibers and should not be inserted into a port unless the model manual explicitly describes that procedure.
4. Use mild detergent only when the manual allows it
For greasy or dried dirt that a dry cloth cannot remove, read the exact model’s care instructions before applying anything. Sony’s guidance allows a cloth slightly moistened with mild detergent for a very dirty player. Dampen one corner of the cloth, wring it until it is only faintly moist, and test a hidden, non-gold area if the manual does not specify the finish in detail.
Wipe the contaminated spot once or twice without pressure, then immediately use a second clean, dry cloth. Never pour detergent onto the player, saturate the cloth, or allow a wet edge to reach a button, jack, seam or screen border. If moisture cannot be kept away from an opening, do not use the damp method.

Leave the player disconnected until the exterior is completely dry. Do not use a hair dryer, heat gun or direct heater. If any liquid may have entered the device, stop using it and follow the manufacturer’s liquid-exposure procedure rather than powering it on to test it.

Which cleaning method should you choose?

Can you use alcohol on a gold-plated Walkman?
Do not use alcohol on the gold-plated exterior unless the exact manufacturer manual explicitly authorizes it. Sony’s model guidance says: “Do not clean with solvents such as alcohol, naphtha, or paint thinner. These solvents may damage the surface of the player.” Sony’s consumer care guidance also warns against thinner, benzene and alcohol solvents.
Some audio-maintenance articles recommend isopropyl alcohol for other finishes or for electrical contacts. That advice does not override a finish-specific warning from the player manufacturer. The same liquid can be suitable for a bare connector contact and unsuitable for a decorated chassis. If your manual is unavailable, choose a dry lens cloth and contact the manufacturer rather than assuming that a common electronics solvent is safe.
Keep cosmetic surfaces separate from electrical contacts
A gold-plated housing and a gold-plated plug have different jobs. The housing is a cosmetic finish that needs minimal contact. A plug or jack is an electrical interface where contamination or oxidation can create resistance and crackling.
When crackling points to a connector
First isolate the fault. Try another known-good cable or headphones, gently reseat the plug, and check whether the noise changes when the plug is moved. If only one detachable plug produces the noise, the contact—not the player’s gold-colored exterior—is the likely cleaning target. Do not confuse a software playback fault, damaged cable or loose jack with surface dirt.
Conditional contact cleaning
A specialist headphone-maintenance guide describes using isopropyl alcohol for grime on suitable connector surfaces and a gold-contact conditioner such as CAIG DeoxIT Gold when oxidation is involved. Treat that as conditional guidance: verify that the product is compatible with the specific plug or jack, use the smallest amount possible, and follow its label. Put liquid on an appropriate applicator rather than spraying toward the player.
Disconnect the plug, clean only the accessible metal contact, allow it to dry fully, and reconnect it. Do not insert a wet applicator into the player’s socket. Do not flood a jack, scrape contacts with a metal tool or use an abrasive eraser. If crackling remains, the jack, cable or soldered connection may need service.

Materials to use and materials to avoid
Suitable basic materials
- Clean high-pile microfiber cloth or eyeglass-lens cloth.
- Soft protective mat or folded lint-free cloth for the tabletop.
- Manual camera blower or controlled electronics air duster.
- Mild detergent only when the model manual permits it, applied to the cloth rather than the player.
Do not use on the plated exterior
- Paper towels, tissues, abrasive paper or rough cotton.
- Metal brushes, stiff-bristle brushes, melamine sponges or polishing erasers.
- Metal polish, jewelry polish, rubbing compound or any product intended to remove a layer of material.
- Alcohol, naphtha, paint thinner, benzene or household solvent wipes when the manual prohibits solvents.
- Spray bottles, aerosol cleaner aimed at the player, or a soaked cloth.
- Dirty cloths that have been used with wax, oil, grit or cleaning chemicals.
“Non-abrasive” on a product label is not enough by itself. The finish compatibility and the player’s manual control the decision.
How often should you clean it?
No authoritative universal cleaning interval is established for gold-plated audio players. Clean when you can see fingerprints, dust or residue, and otherwise leave the finish alone. A light dry wipe after handling is safer than a scheduled deep cleaning that repeatedly rubs the surface.
Reduce the need for cleaning by handling the player with clean, dry hands, holding it by unplated edges where practical, and storing it in a clean pouch. Keep it away from loose coins, keys and grit. Do not wrap it in a fabric that sheds lint or has abrasive particles embedded in its fibers.

Use a clean barrier
Place the player in a soft, lint-free sleeve or case with no exposed zipper teeth or metal hardware touching the gold-plated areas. Before storage, make sure the device is dry and free of grit. Do not store it in a pocket with keys, coins or a cable plug.
Prevent pressure and rubbing
A case that is too tight can press dust into the finish as the player moves. Choose padding that holds the player without forcing it against a seam or buckle. During transport, keep the device from sliding against other electronics.

Avoid damp locations, direct heat and prolonged sunlight. Condensation is a greater threat than ordinary dust because moisture can reach internal contacts and controls. If the player has moved from a cold environment into a warm room, let it reach room temperature before operating it.

Common mistakes and how to recover
You wiped dust without blowing it away
Stop and inspect the finish under diffuse light. Do not try to remove a suspected scratch by polishing harder. Blow the surface clean, switch to a fresh cloth and use lighter strokes next time. If a line remains, it may be a scratch or plating wear rather than residue; a service center is safer than home refinishing.
You used a solvent on the housing
Stop applying it and do not add another chemical to “neutralize” it. Wipe only as directed by the manufacturer’s care instructions, keep the player powered off and allow it to dry. Photograph any discoloration and contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider if the appearance or finish changes.
Liquid reached a port or seam
Disconnect power immediately. Do not press buttons repeatedly and do not power the player on to check whether it still works. Follow the model’s liquid-exposure instructions or seek qualified service. External drying alone cannot confirm that internal areas are safe.

Test with a different cable or headphones and inspect the plug for looseness or damage. If the noise follows the player’s jack, stop applying cleaner; repeated treatment can push contamination deeper or damage the socket. Arrange service for a worn jack, broken solder joint or other hardware fault.
A practical decision checklist
- Only loose dust? Use a blower and stop.
- Fingerprints or light film? Use a clean, dry microfiber or eyeglass cloth with almost no pressure.
- Dried grime? Check the exact manual; use a barely damp cloth with mild detergent only if authorized.
- Considering alcohol? Do not use it on the exterior when the manufacturer prohibits solvents, as Sony does for its gold-plated players.
- Crackling from a detachable plug? Treat the connector separately and verify compatibility before using any contact product.
- Crackling from the player’s jack, liquid intrusion or visible plating damage? Stop cleaning and seek qualified diagnosis.
What the manufacturer guidance establishes
Sony’s 2022 Help Guide provides the clearest finish-specific rules: gold-plated parts are more sensitive than regular plated parts; a soft-cloth-covered tabletop helps prevent scratches; a soft eyeglass-cleaning cloth is suitable for routine cleaning; and alcohol, naphtha and paint thinner should not be used on the player surface. For heavy dirt, Sony allows a cloth slightly moistened with mild detergent while warning that water must not enter the player.
Those instructions are more authoritative for a Sony model than a generic tip written for another device. For a different manufacturer or a different finish, read that player’s manual first and apply the same principle: remove dust before contact, use the mildest compatible method, keep liquids out of openings and stop before cosmetic cleaning becomes abrasive polishing.
