How to handle a PS5 game disc without damaging it
Pick it up by the center and edge
Before removing a disc from its case, place your thumb or finger through the center hole and support the outside edge with another finger. This gives you a stable grip while keeping the playing surface clear. If you need to turn the disc over, keep your fingers on those same areas rather than pinching the broad, shiny surface.

How to store PS5 game discs safely
Use the original case for extended storage
PlayStation’s safety guide states: “When discs will not be used for an extended period of time, store them in their cases.” Close the case fully so the disc is secured by its hub and cannot slide around. A standard protective Blu-ray game-disc case is the directly supported storage method in the manufacturer’s guidance.
If an original case is lost or broken, a replacement case can restore the same basic arrangement: the disc is held in a closed case instead of being left loose. PlayStation’s care instructions do not establish that every sleeve, binder, or envelope offers equivalent protection, so treat those alternatives as less certain than a proper case.

Choose a cool, dry, shaded location
Keep the closed case away from high temperatures, high humidity, and direct sunlight. A shaded indoor shelf or cabinet is more appropriate than a windowsill, radiator area, hot vehicle, damp basement, or other location exposed to heat or moisture. Do not store loose discs in stacks or at an angle
Uncased discs should not be stacked one on another. PlayStation also warns against storing uncased discs at an angle because these positions can cause warping. Keep the case and disc together
Returning each disc to its matching case prevents unnecessary handling and makes it easier to identify a disc without touching its surface. Close the case before moving a group of games. How to clean a PS5 game disc
Use the right cloth
For a dirty or scratched disc, PlayStation Support specifies a lint-free cleaning cloth made specifically for Blu-ray Discs or DVDs. The cloth should be soft and free of grit. A lint-free disc-cleaning cloth is a modest, purpose-built item; no particular brand, price, or model is required by the guidance.

Follow this cleaning procedure
- Remove the disc from the console and hold it by the center hole and outer edge.
- Inspect the surface for fingerprints, smudges, dust, or visible scratches.
- Use the dry, soft cloth recommended for Blu-ray Discs or DVDs.
- Wipe lightly in a straight line from the center toward the outer edge.
- Rotate the disc and repeat the center-to-edge motion until the visible contamination is gone.
- Check the surface again before reinserting it. If it is clean and dry, test it in the PS5.
The direction matters. Do not scrub in circles around the disc. Use only light pressure; the goal is to lift contamination, not grind it into the surface.
What cleaning cannot do
Cleaning removes surface contamination, but PlayStation’s instructions do not claim that it repairs scratches. If a disc remains unreadable after proper cleaning, treat that as a continuing disc or system-troubleshooting issue rather than assuming another cleaning product will restore it.

A single read failure does not prove that the console is defective. Use a controlled sequence so you change one factor at a time.

Step 1: Verify insertion and condition
Confirm that the disc was inserted in the correct orientation for your PS5’s drive. Eject it and inspect the playing surface for fingerprints, smudges, dust, or scratches. Check the edge and center hole for anything that could prevent the disc from sitting correctly.
Step 2: Clean the disc correctly

- Do not apply chemicals in an attempt to make a failed disc readable.
- Do not force the disc into or out of the drive.
- Do not conclude that the console is at fault until you have tried another supported disc.
Condensation after moving the PS5 or disc from cold to warm
The PS5 safety guide warns that moisture may condense on a disc or on the console lens when the console or disc is brought directly from a cold place into a warm one. Condensation can interfere with reading and should be allowed to evaporate before you resume testing.

- Wait several hours if necessary; the guide notes that evaporation may take several hours.
- Reinsert the disc only after the moisture is gone.
Do not wipe inside the drive or apply a chemical intended to speed drying. The manufacturer’s instruction is to remove power and wait for evaporation.
