Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If you only saw a leaked game-build report or file and never downloaded or ran it, that fact alone does not show that your device or crypto wallet was infected. The risk changes if you downloaded or executed an untrusted build, entered a recovery phrase or password, connected a wallet to an unfamiliar site, or approved a transaction. In those cases, stop sensitive activity on the suspect device, move recovery work to a clean device, and treat any wallet secret exposed there as compromised.
This guide separates three problems that are often confused: possible device infection, exposure of wallet secrets, and unwanted smart-contract permissions. Each requires a different response. It also explains the difference between a self-custody wallet and a custodial exchange account, where the provider controls account recovery.

First, establish what actually happened
A “game-build leak” describes how a file or build became available, not what the file does. The available official guidance does not identify a particular leaked build, malware family, studio, platform, or indicator of compromise. Do not assume that every leak contains malware, and do not assume that merely reading about one infected your computer.
Recommended Free Tools
Write down the facts before deleting files or changing settings. Record where the file came from, its name, when it was downloaded, whether it was opened or installed, which accounts were used afterward, and whether a wallet extension or hardware wallet was connected. Preserve suspicious messages and file metadata if an investigation may be necessary, but do not keep running an untrusted executable.

Exposure levels and the right response
| What happened | What it establishes | Priority action |
|---|---|---|
| You saw a leak discussed, or viewed a page, but did not download or run a build. | No evidence that your device or wallet was infected. | Do not enter secrets into links or files associated with the leak. Continue normal security hygiene and monitor accounts. |
| You downloaded a build but did not open or execute it. | The file is present; execution-based compromise is not established. | Do not open it. Isolate or remove it using a trusted process, and avoid using the device for wallet or account recovery until it has been checked if the file’s origin is uncertain. |
| You opened, installed, or executed a suspicious build. | Stored credentials, browser sessions, files, and wallet data may have been exposed. | Stop sensitive activity on that device. Use a clean device to secure accounts and assess the affected machine. |
| You typed a recovery phrase or private key on the suspect device, or it may have been copied from it. | The wallet’s master secret must be considered exposed. | Create a new wallet with a new recovery phrase on a clean device and move assets after checking every destination. |
| You connected a wallet to an unfamiliar site or approved a contract transaction. | A site may have contract permissions or authorizations, but this does not by itself prove that the private key leaked. | Review and revoke unnecessary permissions through a trusted wallet or chain tool, and stop signing unfamiliar requests. |
These categories can overlap. For example, a malicious build could expose a browser session and a recovery phrase, while a separate wallet connection could leave a contract approval active. Handle each exposure independently.
Immediate containment: what to do in the first hour
- Stop entering sensitive information on the suspect device. Do not log in with passwords, paste a recovery phrase, unlock a wallet, approve a transaction, or open an account-recovery link there. FTC malware guidance says to stop logging into accounts with usernames, passwords, or other sensitive information while suspected malware is being handled.
- Disconnect the device from networks if practical. Disconnect Wi-Fi or wired networking while you document the situation and arrange a scan or professional assessment. This limits ongoing communication, but it does not prove that previously stored sessions or secrets are safe.
- Choose a clean device for recovery. Use a separate computer or phone that was not used to run the build and is updated, protected, and free of unexplained browser extensions or applications. If you cannot establish that a device is clean, use a trusted technician or another known-safe device.
- Secure the email account that can reset other accounts. Email is often the recovery path for exchanges, games, social accounts, and cloud services. From the clean device, change its password, sign out other sessions, enable two-factor authentication, and inspect recovery addresses, phone numbers, passkeys, forwarding rules, and unfamiliar devices.
- Contact providers through verified channels. Type the provider’s known address yourself or use an official application. Do not use a link, phone number, or direct message supplied by someone who contacts you unexpectedly about the leak or your wallet.
- Preserve evidence when the stakes justify it. Keep copies of suspicious messages, timestamps, hashes, and relevant logs without executing the file again. Businesses and studios may need this material for forensic analysis.
Recover accounts from a clean device
After email, work through the accounts that could move money, reset identities, or expose personal data. The sequence matters because changing a low-priority password first does not help if an attacker still controls the email account that can reset it.
Use this recovery order
- Email and identity provider: change the password to a unique one, sign out all devices and sessions, enable two-factor authentication, and remove unrecognized recovery methods or forwarding rules.
- Custodial exchange and payment accounts: change passwords, terminate active sessions and API keys, enable two-factor authentication, review withdrawal addresses and security settings, and contact the exchange’s verified support channel if you see an unfamiliar login, withdrawal, or profile change.
- Game, social, and cloud accounts: change unique passwords, sign out everywhere, remove unknown linked applications, inspect account-recovery details, and enable two-factor authentication.
- Other accounts that reused a password: replace that password everywhere it was used. Do not reuse the new email password on another service.
FTC guidance for regaining control of a hacked account specifically recommends changing the password, signing out of all devices, enabling two-factor authentication, and checking recovery information. FBI guidance similarly advises contacting account providers promptly, changing passwords, placing alerts, and monitoring suspicious logins and transactions.

- Delete unknown email forwarding rules and filters that could hide security notices.
- Check whether an attacker changed your recovery phone, alternate email, passkey, or authenticator enrollment.
- Inspect transaction history, withdrawal addresses, marketplace listings, and game-account inventory.
- Save provider case numbers and notification emails. Use only the provider’s official escalation process.
If you see unauthorized activity, tell the provider exactly when you noticed it and what changed. Do not wait for a suspicious contact to “help” you recover the account.

Wallet triage: distinguish a leaked secret from a risky authorization
A wallet recovery phrase is the master key. Ethereum.org’s wallet-security guidance states: “Never, for any reason, share your recovery phrase or private keys!” A wallet application password, browser password, or device PIN is not a replacement for that phrase. If the phrase or a private key was entered, stored, photographed, copied, or otherwise exposed on a suspect device, assume the wallet is compromised.
If the recovery phrase or private key may have leaked
- On a clean device, create a completely new wallet and generate a new recovery phrase. Do not import the old phrase into the new wallet.
- Write the new phrase offline using the wallet’s documented process. Never paste it into a website, form, chat, email, screenshot, cloud note, or purported support ticket.
- Verify the new receiving address on the clean device or hardware-wallet display before sending anything.
- Move assets from the old wallet to the new one, prioritizing assets and networks where an attacker could act quickly. Check network, address, amount, and destination before signing.
- Stop using the old wallet for new deposits. Mark it as compromised in your own records and watch it for unauthorized transactions.
On-chain transactions are generally irreversible. A new wallet does not reverse a transfer that has already been signed and broadcast, and no legitimate recovery service needs your phrase or private key.
If the wallet was only connected to a site
A connection or approval can grant a smart contract permission to spend particular tokens without exposing the private key. Review permissions through a trusted wallet interface or chain tool and revoke approvals that are unnecessary. Use limited spend approvals where the wallet and application support them.

Self-custody wallet versus custodial exchange
| Account type | Who controls the key or recovery process? | What to do after suspected exposure |
|---|---|---|
| Self-custody wallet | You control the recovery phrase or private key. | Create a fresh wallet if the secret may be exposed, then transfer assets carefully. There is no central organization that can reset a compromised phrase. |
| Custodial exchange account | The exchange controls the account infrastructure and its recovery process. | Contact the exchange directly, change credentials, end sessions, disable unknown API access, add two-factor authentication, and report unauthorized activity. |
Do not send a phrase, private key, one-time code, or remote-access session to a person claiming to be support. The FBI warns users to contact account providers immediately to regain control, change passwords, and place alerts for suspicious login attempts or transactions.
Check and restore the affected device
Account recovery and device cleanup are separate jobs. A password changed from an infected machine can be captured again, and a successful scan does not prove that every stolen session has been invalidated.
- Update or obtain reputable security software from a trusted source. FTC guidance recommends updating or obtaining reputable security software and running a security scan.
- Run a full scan, not just a quick file check. Follow the security software’s quarantine and restart instructions. Record detections and timestamps.
- Review installed applications, browser extensions, startup items, and recently changed settings. Remove only items you can identify confidently; preserve suspicious artifacts if a professional will examine the device.
- Install operating-system and browser updates. Restart as required and repeat the scan after updates.
- Escalate when confidence is low. If malware persists, security tools are disabled, the device behaves unexpectedly, or you cannot tell whether the machine is clean, contact the device maker or a trusted technician. For high-value incidents, consider an independent forensic investigator.
Do not treat a factory reset as a reason to skip account recovery. Resetting can remove local malware while stolen passwords, tokens, or wallet secrets remain useful to an attacker. Secure accounts and replace exposed wallet secrets separately.
If you operate a studio or build environment
A developer or studio leak can be an organizational incident even when an individual player’s device was never infected. CISA guidance for compromised software supply chains recommends reviewing affected developer systems and rotating or revoking secrets accessible to compromised systems.

Contain and scope the build pipeline
- Restrict access to the build, source-control, artifact, package, and deployment systems while preserving relevant logs.
- Review CI/CD logs, cloud audit trails, repository activity, signing systems, package registries, and developer workstations for unauthorized access or unusual exports.
- Identify every credential, token, signing key, service account, environment variable, and cloud role the affected machines or jobs could access.
- Rotate or revoke those secrets, including credentials that show no obvious misuse. Create replacements with the least privilege needed.
- Rebuild artifacts from a known-good source and verify distribution channels before publishing an update.
FTC business guidance supports using clean machines where possible, updating credentials, preserving evidence, and considering independent forensic investigators when a breach requires source-and-scope analysis. Coordinate communications with legal, security, platform, and incident-response staff rather than speculating publicly about an unverified malware claim.
Common traps after a wallet or game leak
- “Support” messages asking for the phrase: no legitimate support agent needs it. End the conversation and report the account.
- Recovery websites that ask you to validate a phrase: never enter a phrase or private key into a website to “check” whether it works.
- Confusing approval revocation with key replacement: revocation limits a contract; it cannot make an exposed key secret again.
- Reusing a password or old phrase: a new wallet must use a newly generated phrase, and account passwords should be unique.
- Continuing to trade or play on the suspect device: browser sessions, clipboard data, and typed credentials may still be exposed.
- Expecting an irreversible transfer to be reversed: contact the relevant provider or chain service promptly, but do not promise yourself that crypto can be recovered.
- Trusting urgency: attackers often claim that assets will be lost unless you sign immediately. Pause, verify the destination independently, and seek help through official channels.
Safer wallet and account practices after the incident
Use hardware storage for future key protection
Ethereum.org recommends hardware wallets for offline private-key storage. A hardware wallet can reduce online exposure for a newly generated phrase, but it cannot undo compromise of a phrase that was already typed, photographed, copied, or displayed on an untrusted device. Buy and initialize such a device through a trustworthy channel, verify its receiving address on the device itself, and keep its recovery material offline.
Separate routine activity from high-value storage
- Keep only the amount needed for routine applications in a wallet used for frequent connections.
- Use a separate wallet for assets that do not need to interact with unknown contracts.
- Review approvals periodically and remove permissions that are no longer necessary.
- Use two-factor authentication on exchange and email accounts, preferably with a method that is not dependent on the compromised device.
- Maintain offline records of wallet addresses and transaction details without recording recovery phrases digitally.
Monitor after recovery
For several weeks, review exchange withdrawals, wallet activity, email forwarding, account sign-ins, and two-factor prompts. An attacker who copied a session or secret may wait before acting. Set provider alerts where available, and investigate any unexpected login, password-reset message, approval, or transaction from the provider’s verified channel.

A practical decision checklist
Use this checklist to decide whether you need account recovery, wallet replacement, or permission cleanup:
Quick Recap
- Only saw the leak: do not download or run files from it; no infection is established.
- Ran the build: stop sensitive use, move recovery to a clean device, scan or professionally assess the machine, and change account credentials.
- Entered a phrase or private key: create a new wallet immediately on a clean device and transfer assets after verifying every destination.
- Connected to an unfamiliar site: review and revoke unnecessary contract permissions, then stop signing unknown requests.
- Used a custodial exchange: contact that exchange directly, end sessions, rotate passwords and API keys, and report suspicious transactions.
- Managed a studio or build system: preserve evidence, review CI/CD and cloud logs, and rotate every secret accessible to affected systems.
