Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallThe dependable way to protect a multiplayer game server from DDoS attacks is to use layers: place players behind a CDN or reverse proxy that can absorb traffic, keep the origin address private, restrict origin access to the edge provider, filter application requests with a WAF and rate limits, cache what can be cached, monitor both edge and origin health, and keep an incident runbook ready. A host firewall by itself cannot stop a flood that fills the network connection before packets reach the machine.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
What DDoS protection must accomplish
A distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack sends more traffic or more work than a service can handle. For a game server, that can mean players cannot connect, matchmaking times out, latency becomes unstable, or a web panel and API fail even while the game process is still running. The traffic may come from many compromised devices, so blocking one address rarely solves the problem.

Protection depends on where the attack is stopped:
- Network and transport attacks (layers 3 and 4) overwhelm bandwidth, packets per second, connection tables, or protocol handling. UDP reflection and amplification attacks spoof the victim’s address so third-party services send replies toward the victim. The ISP, hosting network, or a specialized edge must absorb or scrub this traffic.
- Application attacks (layer 7) send apparently valid HTTP or API requests to consume CPU, database connections, workers, or authentication capacity. A WAF, endpoint-specific rate limit, caching, and application changes can reduce this work.
These layers are complementary. A WAF cannot rescue an uplink that is already saturated, while upstream scrubbing does not know that one login request is far more expensive than a static file request.
Use an edge service before the origin
The first architectural decision is to put public traffic through a provider that has substantially more distributed capacity than the game server. For browser-facing game portals, account systems, patch manifests, leaderboards, and APIs, this is usually a CDN or reverse proxy. Common AWS building blocks are CloudFront, Route 53, AWS Shield, and AWS WAF; Cloudflare provides an equivalent reverse-proxy and DDoS-protection model. Select a service that supports the protocols your game actually uses: an HTTP reverse proxy does not automatically protect a custom UDP game port.

Basic edge deployment
- Create the edge distribution or proxy and add the public hostname players use.
- Point DNS to the provider rather than directly to the server’s address. Keep the DNS record proxied or otherwise configured so the origin address is not published.
- Terminate TLS at the edge when the service is HTTP or HTTPS, and use an encrypted connection from the edge to the origin as well.
- Configure health checks, timeouts, maximum request sizes, and connection behavior appropriate to the game API.
- Test normal login, matchmaking, static downloads, and administrative functions through the edge before applying restrictive origin rules.
For a dedicated UDP or TCP game listener, use a provider and plan that explicitly supports that traffic, or place the game service behind a protected gaming network or load-balancing layer. Do not assume that routing a hostname through an HTTP CDN hides or protects a raw game port.
Hide and lock down the origin
Edge protection is defeated if attackers can discover and use the server’s direct address. Cloudflare’s guidance is explicit: the origin should not be exposed to the public Internet, and access should be possible only from Cloudflare IP addresses. The same principle applies to any reverse-proxy provider.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPrevent origin discovery
- Remove public DNS records that point to the origin. Check old subdomains, mail records, status pages, development hosts, and certificate-transparency history for leaked names.
- Avoid embedding the origin address in game clients, launcher configuration, downloadable files, error pages, or public source repositories.
- Use a separate address for administrative access and permit it only through a VPN, bastion host, or tightly controlled allowlist.
- When architecture permits, keep backend resources on private networks and avoid public Elastic IP addresses on resources that do not need them.
Restrict inbound traffic
Set security groups, host firewalls, network ACLs, or equivalent controls so the web origin accepts only the edge provider’s published address ranges on the required ports. Permit management traffic only from the administrator network. If the origin must accept direct game traffic, limit it to the game’s protocol and known service ranges where practical, and document why each exception exists.
Apply changes carefully: an allowlist that omits a provider range will look like an outage, while an unrestricted rule leaves the origin exposed. Keep a temporary break-glass path for administrators and remove it after verification.
Handle network floods upstream
Volumetric floods and protocol attacks can consume the link between the Internet and your host before a local firewall can inspect packets. UDP reflection is a typical example: an attacker forges your address in requests to amplifying services, and the replies converge on your server. CISA recommends network-level rate limiting for legitimate UDP services, but a host rule cannot create bandwidth that the uplink does not have.
What to arrange with your provider
- Use hosting with upstream DDoS scrubbing or inline mitigation, not only an operating-system firewall.
- Confirm whether protection covers layer 3/4 floods, game-specific UDP or TCP ports, and attacks against an assigned IP rather than only HTTP domains.
- Ask how mitigation is activated, how long traffic is diverted, what telemetry is supplied, and whether clean traffic returns through the original route.
- Keep an escalation contact for the hosting provider and ISP. Large events may require a null route, temporary address change, or provider-side filtering.
Do not respond to an attack by opening every port, disabling stateful inspection, or moving the same public address to another small host. Those actions generally preserve the bottleneck and can increase the attack surface.

Protect HTTP and API endpoints with a WAF
Once traffic reaches the edge, a web application firewall (WAF) can reject malicious patterns before they consume origin resources. Use it for account portals, launcher APIs, patch metadata, web sockets where supported, admin panels, and any HTTP service associated with the game.
Prioritize expensive paths
Start with endpoints whose cost is higher than a static request or whose abuse can create many downstream operations:
- Login, password reset, and account verification
- Matchmaking and server-list queries
- Search, inventory, ranking, and replay queries
- Checkout or entitlement checks
- GraphQL queries and API mutation paths
- Administrative and moderation panels
Use managed rule sets for common exploits, then add custom rules for your URL paths, methods, headers, authentication state, and known automation. A WAF is not a substitute for validating input and enforcing authorization in the application.
Set rate limits from measured behavior
A rate limit should reflect what a legitimate player, launcher, or server can do and how costly each request is. AWS WAF rate-based rules automatically block traffic from source IPs when they exceed thresholds you define; they can also be configured to count or alert so you can observe the effect before enforcing it. Cloudflare likewise recommends rate limiting that accounts for resource exhaustion and endpoint behavior.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Build a threshold
- Measure normal requests per second by endpoint, source type, authentication state, region, and time of day.
- Separate cheap public requests from expensive authenticated operations. A single limit for every URL will either waste capacity or block legitimate players.
- Choose a window and threshold that allow legitimate bursts such as a game launch, reconnect storm, or patch release, with headroom below the point where origin latency rises.
- Begin in logging or count mode. Review blocked candidates, false positives, status codes, and origin load.
- Enforce the rule, return a clear retry response such as HTTP 429 for APIs, and provide a controlled exception process for trusted services.
Use more than the source IP
IP-based limits are useful but imperfect. Mobile networks, carrier NAT, schools, and shared households can put many legitimate players behind one address; botnets can distribute requests across thousands. Where your edge supports it, combine IP with account identity, API key, session, device signal, method, URL, and request cost. Limit query complexity and pagination depth for GraphQL or search endpoints, cap request bodies, and require authentication before expensive operations.
Aggressive limits can block a legitimate reconnect burst or a popular event. Loosen or scope the rule when telemetry shows false positives; do not simply disable all protection.

Make legitimate traffic cheaper
Caching reduces the number of requests and bytes that reach the origin during both ordinary peaks and attacks. Cache versioned patch manifests, images, scripts, public server lists with a short freshness period, and other responses that are identical for many players. Use CloudFront or another edge cache to serve cacheable objects close to users.
Cache safely
- Never cache personalized account data, session responses, inventory, or moderation results unless the cache key and authorization behavior are explicitly safe.
- Version files so a release can use a long cache lifetime without serving stale content after an update.
- Compress text and use connection reuse between the edge and origin.
- Separate inexpensive public content from authenticated operations so a flood against login cannot evict or delay static assets.
For dynamic services, horizontal scaling, queue limits, connection pooling, and graceful degradation matter. Return a lightweight status or retry response instead of allowing every request to hold a database connection indefinitely. Scaling helps only when the network and upstream service can deliver the additional capacity.

Monitor the edge, origin, and player experience
Set dashboards that distinguish traffic stopped at the edge from traffic that reached the origin. At minimum, track:
- Requests per second, bandwidth, packets per second, and concurrent connections
- HTTP status-code mix, WAF actions, rate-limit counts, and cache-hit ratio
- Origin CPU, memory, disk, worker utilization, connection pools, and queue depth
- Latency percentiles, timeouts, error rates, matchmaking success, and game-session disconnects
- Traffic by protocol, endpoint, region, authentication state, and provider point of presence
Configure alarms for sudden deviations from a baseline rather than a single universal number. AWS describes CloudWatch alarms that can trigger scaling responses, along with inline CloudFront and Route 53 mitigation and automatic application-layer protections available with Shield Advanced. Alert both when edge traffic spikes and when origin traffic rises unexpectedly; the second signal can indicate an exposed origin or a cache failure.
Keep logs long enough to investigate, but control access and retention costs. Record the rule, threshold, timestamp, request category, and action for every mitigation change so responders can reverse an over-broad rule.
Choose a provider using the right criteria
“CDN” and “DDoS protection” describe different capabilities. Compare the service against your game’s actual protocols and failure modes.

AWS-oriented deployment
AWS documents CloudFront and Route 53 inline mitigation, CloudWatch monitoring, and Shield Advanced automatic WAF protections. This is a natural fit when the game already uses AWS networking and identity, but verify coverage for any non-HTTP game protocol and configure origin restrictions yourself. Shield Standard and CloudFront protection do not eliminate the need for secure security groups, WAF rules, rate limits, and a response plan.
Cloudflare-oriented deployment
Cloudflare documents managed DDoS rulesets, custom WAF rules, rate limiting, and origin restriction. Its reverse proxy can simplify hiding an HTTP origin, provided every alternate hostname and direct service path is closed. Confirm the product and plan support for a custom TCP or UDP game listener before relying on it for gameplay traffic.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Prepare a DDoS incident runbook
During an attack, responders should execute a known sequence rather than improvise under pressure. Write the runbook while the service is healthy and test the permissions it assumes.
- Declare and classify: record the start time, affected game regions, protocols, ports, symptoms, and whether the edge or origin is saturated.
- Preserve evidence: save edge analytics, WAF events, flow logs, origin metrics, and representative request samples with timestamps.
- Confirm the origin is closed: check DNS, security groups, ACLs, firewall logs, forgotten subdomains, and direct-IP probes.
- Apply the least-disruptive control: enable the provider’s managed DDoS mode, tighten a targeted rate rule, challenge suspicious HTTP clients, or disable an abused endpoint.
- Escalate upstream: contact the CDN, cloud provider, hosting provider, and ISP with source data, destination addresses, protocols, ports, and start time. Request scrubbing or provider-side filtering for volumetric traffic.
- Protect core gameplay: shed optional web features, lengthen noncritical polling intervals, pause expensive jobs, and reserve capacity for authentication and live sessions.
- Communicate: tell players what is unavailable and where status updates will appear; avoid publishing the origin address or operational details that help attackers.
- Verify recovery: watch edge-to-origin traffic, latency, error rates, and disconnects for a sustained period rather than declaring success after one quiet minute.
- Roll back safely: remove temporary blocks in a controlled order, verify normal regional traffic, and keep evidence and a timeline for the post-incident review.
Document who can change DNS, WAF rules, rate limits, security groups, provider settings, and game configuration. Include after-hours contacts, backup credentials stored securely, decision thresholds, customer-communication templates, and a rollback owner.
Common mistakes and their fixes
“The firewall will stop it.”
A firewall can drop unwanted packets, but it cannot prevent an upstream link from filling. Use provider-side scrubbing or inline mitigation for volumetric and protocol floods.
“Putting the website behind a CDN protects the game port.”
HTTP proxying protects only the protocols and ports the service supports. Obtain explicit TCP/UDP coverage for the game listener or protect that listener through a suitable network provider.

“We hid the main DNS record, so the origin is private.”
Old subdomains, mail infrastructure, development hosts, leaked client settings, and historical records can reveal the same address. Audit every public path and enforce provider-only access at the network layer.
“One global rate limit is simpler.”
It is simpler but often wrong. A static asset, login attempt, search query, and GraphQL mutation have different costs and legitimate usage patterns. Scope limits by endpoint and behavior, then tune them from logs.
“Scaling solves DDoS.”
Scaling can absorb more application work, but it does not create bandwidth and can multiply database or egress costs. Put edge absorption and caching before autoscaling, and cap queues and downstream connections.
A practical implementation sequence
For a small studio or community server, implement controls in this order:
- Inventory public hostnames, IPs, ports, protocols, providers, and administrative paths.
- Choose an edge or upstream mitigation service that supports each exposed protocol.
- Move HTTP services behind the edge, update DNS, and verify TLS and health checks.
- Close direct origin access and remove unused public services and ports.
- Enable caching for safe public assets and separate expensive authenticated operations.
- Add WAF managed rules, then endpoint-specific rate rules in count mode.
- Establish baselines and alerts for edge traffic, origin load, errors, latency, and player disconnects.
- Enforce tested thresholds, document exceptions, and rehearse the incident runbook with your providers.
This sequence addresses the largest failure domains first: upstream capacity and origin exposure, followed by application abuse and operational response.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Final decision checklist
- Is every public request passing through an edge or upstream mitigation layer appropriate to its protocol?
- Can an attacker reach the origin directly by IP, forgotten hostname, or management port?
- Are volumetric, UDP reflection, TCP exhaustion, and HTTP floods covered by different controls?
- Do expensive endpoints have measured, tested rate limits and request-complexity limits?
- Are safe assets cached, and are personalized responses excluded from shared caches?
- Can your dashboards distinguish edge traffic, origin traffic, and player-visible impact?
- Do named people have permission and contact details to change DNS, WAF, network rules, and provider settings?
- Have you tested escalation, communication, rollback, and evidence preservation before an incident?
A resilient game service treats DDoS protection as an architecture and operations discipline, not a single firewall feature. Distributed edge capacity absorbs traffic, private origins prevent bypasses, endpoint controls limit expensive work, and monitoring plus a practiced runbook turn a chaotic outage into a manageable response.
