Block the incoming Proxy header before it reaches any CGI process, then patch the web server, runtime, and outbound HTTP client. httpoxy is exploitable only when request data can populate the CGI environment variable HTTP_PROXY and an application trusts that variable for outgoing requests. Classic CGI and CGI-like deployments need the closest review; WSGI and FastCGI paths described in the original disclosure do not receive the same CGI environment pollution, although every deployment should still be verified.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
What httpoxy does
httpoxy is a namespace collision between two otherwise legitimate conventions. RFC 3875 maps an incoming HTTP header named Proxy to the CGI environment variable HTTP_PROXY. At the same time, many HTTP clients use HTTP_PROXY as an environment setting that tells them which proxy to use for outbound requests.

An attacker sends a request containing a Proxy header to a CGI endpoint. If the server passes that header into the process environment, the application may interpret the attacker-controlled value as its own outbound proxy configuration. The application can then send API calls, update checks, webhooks, or other HTTP requests through an address and port selected by the attacker. Depending on the client and application, the attacker may be able to observe traffic, redirect requests to selected destinations, or consume resources by forcing connections through an unreliable or deliberately slow proxy.
| Stage | What happens | Security consequence |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Incoming request | The request includes a Proxy header. |
The attacker supplies a value that looks like a normal request header. |
| 2. CGI translation | The web server or CGI bridge maps the header to HTTP_PROXY. |
Request data becomes a process environment variable. |
| 3. Client behavior | An HTTP library or application reads HTTP_PROXY for proxy auto-detection. |
The attacker influences where outbound requests are sent. |
| 4. Outbound call | The server contacts a remote service through the supplied proxy. | Traffic can be intercepted, redirected, or delayed. |
The issue was publicly disclosed in July 2016. It is not a flaw in the HTTP protocol itself; it is the unsafe interaction between the CGI variable naming rule and software that gives that variable proxy-setting semantics.

First determine whether your deployment has the required conditions
Do not classify a server as vulnerable solely because it runs PHP, Python, Go, Apache, Nginx, Tomcat, or HHVM. The relevant question is whether all three conditions are present:
- A request can reach a CGI or CGI-like handler.
- The handler populates
HTTP_PROXYfrom the request’sProxyheader. - An outbound HTTP client or application component trusts that variable, directly or through proxy auto-detection.
Map the complete request path for every public endpoint, including game administration panels, launcher APIs, account services, status pages, webhook receivers, and legacy tools. A single forgotten CGI script can preserve the exposure even after the main application has moved to another framework.

| Execution path | What the disclosure establishes | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Classic CGI | The request headers are translated into CGI environment variables, so this is the primary exposure model. | Whether HTTP_PROXY is populated and read by an outbound client. |
| CGI wrappers and bridges | CGI-like wrappers can preserve the same environment-variable risk. | Whether the wrapper copies request headers into the child process environment. |
| Python CGIHandler | Affected implementation with CVE-2016-1000110. | Python version, handler path, and whether the endpoint is actually CGI. |
| FastCGI | The disclosure describes FastCGI paths as not receiving this CGI environment pollution. | That the service really uses FastCGI and does not add a custom header-to-environment bridge. |
| WSGI | The disclosure describes WSGI paths as avoiding the same CGI environment pollution. | That no middleware or launcher separately imports request headers into proxy variables. |
| Server modules or embedded runtimes | Risk depends on how the module exposes headers and how the client chooses proxies. | Environment inheritance, proxy auto-detection, and custom request handling. |
Apache’s security record says its mitigation prevents a Proxy: header from populating HTTP_PROXY. The project states: This is not assigned an httpd severity, as it is a defect in other software which overloaded well-established CGI environment variables, and does not reflect an error in HTTP server software.
That statement describes the root cause; it does not remove the need to filter the header at your edge.
Apply the protections in this order
1. Remove or reject Proxy at the edge
The most dependable first control is to prevent the header from reaching CGI translation at all. Configure the public-facing reverse proxy, load balancer, web server, or CDN to remove the Proxy request header before forwarding the request. Where compatibility allows, reject requests that contain it and return a normal client-error response instead.
Filtering at the edge protects legacy scripts that you have not yet found and does not depend on every application author remembering to sanitize the value. Apply the rule on every listener and virtual host, including internal administrative interfaces that are reachable through another proxy. Confirm that a downstream hop cannot reintroduce the header from an alternate request field.

2. Patch the web server and runtime
Install the vendor’s security update for the web server, CGI implementation, language runtime, and framework. Apache records that its mitigation was incorporated in Apache HTTP Server 2.4.25 and 2.2.32. Those release numbers identify the historical fix; use a currently supported, vendor-maintained branch rather than stopping at an old minimum.
Check operating-system advisories because distributions may backport the fix while retaining an older-looking version string. Record the package release and advisory status, not just the upstream version, in your inventory.
3. Update outbound HTTP clients
A patched web server does not automatically repair a library that still reads an unsafe proxy environment variable. Update every HTTP client used by the CGI process, including libraries pulled in by plugins and command wrappers.
- Python Requests fixes recorded in the disclosure are 2.7.13, 3.4.6, 3.5.3, and 3.6.0. Verify the exact supported release and any distribution backport in your environment.
- Go fixes were made in 1.7 release candidate 3 and stable releases at or above 1.7. Use a supported Go branch today and confirm the compiled binary’s dependency behavior.
- PHP HTTP clients and other affected components require their vendor-fixed releases; the disclosure does not provide one universal PHP client version.
Do not assume that upgrading the interpreter updates a separately installed client library. Generate a dependency inventory for each CGI application and include statically linked binaries where their proxy behavior may differ from the system package.
4. Make intended proxy settings explicit
If a service must use an outbound proxy, configure that proxy in the service’s deployment configuration, secret store, or authenticated service account rather than relying on ambient environment auto-detection. Keep the setting separate from request-derived variables. Applications should not copy arbitrary request headers into process environments, and they should not treat HTTP_PROXY as trusted merely because it exists.

Document whether a proxy is required, which destinations are allowed, how authentication is supplied, and what should happen when the proxy is unavailable. Explicit configuration makes an unexpected change in outbound routing visible during review.
5. Inventory every CGI-like endpoint
List classic CGI scripts, CGI wrappers, server-side plugins, migration-era tools, and management panels. For each one, identify the process owner, runtime version, outbound destinations, and whether it inherits request-derived environment variables. Include endpoints that are not linked from the main game or site UI; attackers commonly discover them through scanning or old documentation.
6. Test in a controlled maintenance window
Use a non-production endpoint or an isolated staging copy. Send a request with a benign Proxy header and inspect the CGI process environment and outbound-client logs. The test should demonstrate that the value is removed or ignored, while documented proxy configuration continues to work. Do not point the test at an external or untrusted proxy, and do not use a production integration that could send credentials or player data.
Choosing where to block the header
| Control location | Strength | Limitation | Use it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Edge server or load balancer | Stops the value before CGI translation and covers many applications at once. | A missed listener, alternate ingress, or internal path can bypass the rule. | Always; this is the preferred first layer. |
| CGI wrapper | Protects child processes even if another front end forwards the header. | Every wrapper must be configured consistently, and legacy wrappers may be hard to inventory. | You operate shared wrappers or cannot immediately change every edge. |
| Application code | Allows a service to reject unexpected input and enforce destination policy. | Too late if the environment has already been populated; a forgotten endpoint remains exposed. | As defense in depth, never as the only control. |
| Outbound client configuration | Can disable proxy auto-detection or require an explicit proxy. | Does not stop other clients in the same process or another CGI application. | During dependency remediation and application hardening. |
Layering matters because each control addresses a different failure: edge filtering blocks the trigger, patched runtimes remove known unsafe behavior, and explicit client configuration prevents accidental trust of ambient variables.

Python
Python’s exposure centers on CGIHandler and similar CGI execution. The disclosure describes WSGI as avoiding the same environment pollution, but a custom launcher can change that assumption. Check the actual process manager and handler, update Requests to a fixed release, and search code and startup scripts for proxy auto-detection.
Go
Go is mainly relevant when a program is deployed through CGI. The disclosure records fixes in Go 1.7 release candidate 3 and stable releases at or above 1.7. Rebuild old CGI binaries with a supported toolchain, inspect their net/http behavior, and confirm that a front-end rule removes the header before the binary starts.
Apache HTTP Server
Use the Apache security record to verify that the package includes the mitigation associated with 2.4.25 or 2.2.32, or a distribution backport. Keep the edge filter even after patching: it protects other runtimes behind the same server and documents an intentional policy against this ambiguous header.

How to verify that remediation worked
- Enumerate ingress paths. List public, private, and maintenance listeners, then identify which ones can reach CGI or CGI-like handlers.
- Send a harmless header test. From an approved test client, include
Proxy: http://example.invalid:9or another non-routable value on a staging endpoint. The value must never be a real proxy and must not include credentials. - Inspect the boundary. Confirm the edge removed or rejected the header before forwarding. Capture sanitized request metadata so the test itself does not expose secrets.
- Inspect the child process. Verify that the CGI environment does not contain an attacker-controlled
HTTP_PROXY. If the process has a legitimate proxy, confirm that it comes from an explicit deployment setting instead. - Check outbound behavior. Review HTTP-client debug or egress logs and confirm that normal integrations still use their documented route, authentication, timeout, and destination allow-list.
- Repeat per endpoint and release. A passing test on one script does not cover another virtual host, wrapper, container image, or binary.
Keep the test evidence with the deployment record: endpoint, ingress component, runtime and client versions, package advisories, observed header handling, and the date of verification.
If you suspect exploitation
Treat unexpected outbound proxy use as a routing and credential-exposure incident. First preserve relevant edge, CGI, application, DNS, firewall, and egress logs. Look for requests containing a Proxy header, unusual outbound destinations, repeated connection delays, and changes in the proxy environment around the same time.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Immediately enforce edge removal or rejection of the header on every ingress path.
- Temporarily disable nonessential outbound integrations from the affected CGI service if doing so will not create a larger outage.
- Rotate credentials that the service may have sent through an attacker-controlled proxy, including API tokens, webhook secrets, and service-account passwords.
- Review the proxy’s possible destinations and compare them with normal allow-lists and deployment configuration.
- Patch the runtime and HTTP client, rebuild or restart long-running workers, and retest before restoring integrations.
Do not claim compromise solely because a request contained Proxy; exploitation requires the CGI environment mapping and a client that trusts the value. Conversely, a lack of obvious application errors does not prove that an outbound request was not redirected. Use logs and egress controls to establish what actually happened.
Ongoing controls for game and web backends
- Keep a current inventory of CGI and CGI-like handlers, including legacy administration tools.
- Make inbound header filtering part of every reverse-proxy and load-balancer baseline.
- Pin and regularly update HTTP clients independently of the language runtime.
- Prefer explicit, authenticated outbound proxies and destination allow-lists over environment-based auto-detection.
- Include a harmless
Proxy-header regression test in deployment checks for every CGI endpoint. - Monitor egress for new proxy destinations, unexpected ports, and sudden latency changes.
- Record distribution backports and supported-branch status so an old-looking package version is not mistaken for an unpatched one.
There is no single product that “fixes” httpoxy. The durable solution is layered: remove the ambiguous header at the boundary, run fixed server and client software, keep proxy configuration explicit, and verify every execution path that can inherit request data.
