Why Battle.net security protects your World of Warcraft account
World of Warcraft credentials are managed through Battle.net. Someone who obtains your Battle.net email address and password may therefore be able to access the game account and its associated characters, items, and account services. Blizzard’s security guidance focuses on protecting the login credentials, the email account used for recovery, the devices that handle those credentials, and the channels through which attackers try to steal them.

Set up the core protections
1. Create a password used nowhere else
Make the Battle.net password strong and unique. Blizzard specifically warns that reusing a Battle.net email address and password on other websites can put the account at risk (Blizzard Account Hacked guidance; Securing a Battle.net Account).
“Unique” matters as much as “complex.” A password exposed by a different website can be tried against Battle.net automatically, even if you have never shared it with another person. Do not recycle an old gaming password, append a number to a password used elsewhere, or use the same secret for your email and Battle.net.
If remembering separate credentials is difficult, a password manager can be used as a general way to generate and store unique passwords. Blizzard’s cited articles do not endorse a particular password-manager product, so choose one independently and protect its master account with strong, unique credentials and any available multifactor protection.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2. Protect the email account linked to Battle.net
Your email account can receive password-reset messages and other account notices, so securing Battle.net while leaving email exposed creates an obvious recovery weakness. Use a separate password for the email account and enable that provider’s two-factor authentication if it offers it. Blizzard identifies protection of the linked email account as part of securing Battle.net (Securing a Battle.net Account; Blizzard’s account-security guidance).
Review the email provider’s account-recovery options as well. Keep recovery addresses or phone numbers current, and investigate unexpected password-reset or security messages rather than clicking through them blindly. The exact settings and labels differ by email provider; the important separation is that the email password must not be the Battle.net password.
3. Add the Battle.net Authenticator
Blizzard recommends the Battle.net Authenticator, which is provided through Blizzard’s free mobile app (Defend Azeroth When You Defend Your Account; Securing a Battle.net Account). It adds an account-protection step beyond the password, so a stolen password alone is less useful to an attacker.

Install the official Battle.net mobile app from your device’s normal app store, sign in through the app, and follow Blizzard’s current Authenticator enrollment prompts. Keep the phone available when you sign in or when the app asks you to approve an account action. Because Blizzard can change app screens, rely on the prompts shown in the current app rather than an old screenshot or an unofficial walkthrough.
4. Turn on phone notifications when available
Blizzard says phone notifications can help recover access if there is a problem with the Authenticator (Securing a Battle.net Account). Treat this as a recovery aid, not as a replacement for the Authenticator or a guarantee that every lockout will be resolved automatically.
Keep the phone number associated with the account current and protected by your mobile provider’s normal account-security controls. If your number changes, update the account through Blizzard’s official account-management or support channels rather than following a link in an unexpected message.
5. Understand the current passkey boundary
Blizzard describes passkeys as an alternate login method stored on a device. Its Using a Passkey With Battle.net article states that passkeys are currently available only through the beta version of the Battle.net Desktop App. Availability and enrollment steps may change, so verify the current Battle.net documentation before trying to set one up.
A passkey is not the same thing as the mobile Authenticator or phone notifications. A passkey is a device-stored login method; the Authenticator is Blizzard’s account-protection feature in its mobile app; phone notifications are described as support for recovery when the Authenticator presents a problem. Do not assume that enabling one automatically enables the others.
Defend against phishing and stolen-session tricks
Check where every login link goes
Blizzard warns that phishing can arrive through websites, email, or in-game communication while pretending to be Blizzard (Account Hacked). The message may try to create urgency—an alleged suspension, reward, item problem, or security check—so that you enter your credentials before thinking about the destination.

Before entering a password, inspect the destination address. If the message is unexpected, close it and navigate directly to Blizzard or Battle.net by typing the address yourself or using a known bookmark. Do not treat a familiar logo, display name, or in-game sender as proof that a message is genuine. If a prompt asks for login information through an unsolicited page, stop and verify it independently.
Do not “test” a suspicious page with your real password
Entering your credentials just to see whether a page works defeats the purpose of checking it. If you already submitted a password to a suspicious site, change the Battle.net password immediately from an official Blizzard page, change it anywhere else it was reused, and secure the linked email account. If you cannot sign in, move directly to Blizzard’s account-recovery process.
Keep the computer and add-ons safe
Update the software that handles your logins
Blizzard recommends keeping your browser and security software updated and scanning for malware, keyloggers, and viruses (Account Hacked; Securing a Battle.net Account). Updates close known flaws and improve the ability of security tools to detect malicious software, so postpone neither browser updates nor security updates indefinitely.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

A clean scan does not prove that an account is safe, but it is an important part of removing a keylogger or other software that could capture a new password.
Use add-ons only from trusted sources
Add-ons can modify the game interface, but an add-on download can also be used to distribute malicious files. Blizzard advises downloading add-ons only from trusted sites and never running an executable during an add-on installation (Account Hacked).
Be especially cautious of a package that asks you to launch an .exe, installer, script, or “security tool” to make the add-on work. If an add-on may have infected the computer, remove or quarantine it, scan the system for malware, and change the Battle.net password after the device is clean. Changing the password before cleaning a keylogger can simply expose the replacement password too.

Avoid shared and unfamiliar computers
Blizzard warns against logging in on someone else’s computer (Account Hacked). A computer you do not control may contain saved passwords, browser extensions, malware, or a keylogger. If you had to use one temporarily, sign out completely, avoid saving credentials, and change your password from a trusted, clean device if you have any reason to doubt the machine.

Keep control of the credentials and account activity
Never share your login details
Do not give your Battle.net email address, password, Authenticator approval, or recovery information to another player. Blizzard’s guidance warns against account sharing (Account Hacked). Sharing makes it impossible to know who changed a setting, installed something on a device, or disclosed the password, and it can complicate recovery when ownership has to be established.
Reject third-party gold and leveling services
Blizzard warns against buying gold from non-Blizzard sources and using leveling services (Account Hacked). These services may ask for credentials, direct you to a fake login page, or require remote access to the computer. Even when a seller promises convenience, handing over account access creates both a security and an account-policy risk.
Do not let a third party “verify” your account by requesting an Authenticator approval or a one-time code. An approval request you did not initiate is a reason to stop and investigate, not a request to accept quickly.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do if you suspect unauthorized access
Act in this order if you see an unexpected password change, cannot sign in, find missing items, or believe your credentials were exposed.
- Stop using suspicious links or software. Close the message or page that triggered the concern. Do not continue entering credentials into it.
- Try Blizzard’s official recovery process. Use the Account Hacked recovery route. If you are locked out, start from Blizzard’s official support site rather than a link supplied by a stranger or an in-game message.
- Change the Battle.net password after you regain access. Make the new password unique to Battle.net. If the old password was reused elsewhere, replace it on those services too.
- Secure the linked email account. Change its password, enable the provider’s two-factor authentication if available, and check for unexpected recovery or forwarding changes using the provider’s own security controls.
- Re-establish Blizzard’s account protections. Add or re-enroll the Battle.net Authenticator and review phone-notification options according to the current Blizzard app and account prompts.
- Clean the computer. Update the browser and security software, then scan for malware, keyloggers, and viruses. If an add-on or downloaded executable is suspicious, remove it and do not reuse credentials entered while it was installed.
- Contact official support as directed. Blizzard’s recovery guidance directs users to submit a support ticket after the account and computer have been secured. Include the facts support asks for, but never put your password in a ticket.
Blizzard’s End User License Agreement says users should notify Blizzard promptly if they suspect a security breach involving login details. The linked agreement is a Spanish-edition document, and contract terms can vary by territory, so read the terms applicable to your region (Blizzard End User License Agreement).

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Choosing between Blizzard’s account-protection methods
These methods solve different problems. They should not be presented as interchangeable, and the cited support pages do not promise a particular recovery outcome for every account.
| Method | What it is for | Availability stated by Blizzard | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Battle.net Authenticator | An account-protection feature that adds a verification step beyond the password. | Provided through Blizzard’s free mobile app. | Keep the enrolled phone available and follow the current app prompts. |
| Phone notifications | A recovery aid when there is a problem with the Authenticator. | Blizzard recommends them as part of account security. | They support recovery; they are not described as a replacement for the Authenticator. |
| Passkey | An alternate login method stored on a device. | Blizzard’s support article says currently only available through the beta Battle.net Desktop App. | Availability may change; verify the current documentation before setup. |
Do you need to buy a security device?
No purchase is established as necessary by Blizzard’s guidance for this task. The Authenticator is identified as part of Blizzard’s free mobile app, and passkeys are device-stored credentials (Securing a Battle.net Account; Using a Passkey With Battle.net). The reviewed material does not establish support for a particular physical security key or other account-security accessory, so do not assume that a generic hardware key will work with Battle.net.
Common failure modes and the right response
“I changed my password, but the account was accessed again.”
Changing a password alone does not remove a keylogger or other malware. Update security software, scan the computer, inspect recently installed add-ons and executables, and change the password again from a clean device after the scan. Also secure the linked email account and enable the Authenticator.
Recommended Free Tools
“The message looks like Blizzard, so I clicked it.”
Appearance is not verification. Check the destination address, stop entering information, and use a direct Blizzard or Battle.net navigation path. If you entered credentials, treat them as exposed and begin the recovery and password-change sequence.
“A friend wants to level my character.”
Do not share the account. Blizzard specifically warns against account sharing and leveling services. The safe response is to keep the credentials private and use only Blizzard-provided game features.
“The Authenticator is unavailable.”
Use the phone-notification and recovery options Blizzard provides, then follow the official support route. Do not accept an unexpected approval request and do not give another person the code or account password.
“I cannot find the passkey option.”
Blizzard’s cited support article limits passkeys to the beta Battle.net Desktop App. If you are using another app version or platform, the option may not be available there. Check Blizzard’s current documentation before troubleshooting further.
