Protect your World of Warcraft gold by securing Battle.net and your email before you trade, refusing unsolicited login requests and “too good to be true” offers, and using only the game’s built-in transaction systems. If you suspect an account takeover, stop logging in on the affected computer, recover the account through Blizzard’s Account Recovery process, secure the device, and then contact Blizzard Support. A trade scam and an account compromise are different cases, and Blizzard says gold or items lost in a trade scam are not restored, although it may act against a verified scammer.
What you are protecting—and why the login comes first
World of Warcraft gold is only one part of an account’s value. Blizzard says stolen accounts can be stripped of valuable equipment and materials and then used to support gold-selling operations. An attacker who obtains your Battle.net credentials may therefore take gold, raid or crafting materials, characters’ gear, and access to the account itself.

The safest order is:
- Protect the Battle.net login and the email account attached to it.
- Keep the computer and browser safe, including the sources used for addons.
- Recognize phishing before entering a password or approving a login.
- Use supported in-game systems for exchanges and verify every final price or item.
- Respond quickly and in the right order if the account may already be compromised.
These steps reduce the chance of losing gold, but they cannot make every player-to-player agreement recoverable. Blizzard’s current policy is especially important to understand before you accept a “service for gold” arrangement or hand over valuables outside a normal transaction.

Use a unique Battle.net password
Choose a strong password that you do not use for any other site. Password reuse lets a breach somewhere else become a Battle.net takeover. Blizzard also recommends using a unique email address for Battle.net where practical, so a compromised address used for unrelated services is less likely to expose your game account. See Blizzard’s account-security guidance in “Defend Azeroth When You Defend Your Account”.

Do not send the password to a guildmate, friend, “booster,” gold seller, addon author, or anyone claiming to be a Blizzard employee. Account sharing is itself a theft risk: another person can retain a session, save the credentials, or install software on a computer you later trust.
Turn on the Battle.net Authenticator
Blizzard’s account-hacked instructions call for adding an Authenticator, and Blizzard’s current account-security material identifies the free Battle.net Mobile App as the place to get it. Install the app from the official mobile-app store, sign in through the normal Battle.net flow, and follow the app’s Authenticator setup prompts. Keep the recovery information offered during setup in a secure place that is not inside the game account.
An Authenticator adds a second check to the Battle.net login. It does not make phishing safe: if you type credentials into a fake site or approve an unexpected request, an attacker may still gain access. Treat an unrecognized approval request as a warning to stop, change the password from a trusted device, and begin account recovery if necessary.
Protect the email that can reset Battle.net
Enable two-factor authentication on the email account linked to Battle.net if your email provider offers it. An attacker who controls that mailbox can often intercept password-reset messages even when the game password is strong. Use a separate, unique email password and review the provider’s recovery addresses, phone numbers, active sessions, and forwarding rules for changes you did not make.

Blizzard’s recommendations can be summarized as follows:
| Layer | What to do | What it protects |
|---|---|---|
| Battle.net password | Use a strong password unique to Battle.net. | The primary game-account credential. |
| Battle.net Authenticator | Enable it in the free Battle.net Mobile App. | The login with an additional verification step. |
| Email account | Use a unique password and enable email two-factor authentication where available. | Password resets and account-recovery messages. |
| Phone notifications | Enable Blizzard’s available account notifications so unexpected activity is easier to notice. | Awareness of account events; exact notification availability can vary by account and region. |
The sources do not establish that a particular third-party security key or commercial security product is required. Blizzard’s own Authenticator, a protected email account, and careful login habits are the documented baseline.
Recognize phishing before it reaches your gold
Blizzard describes phishing as websites, emails, and in-game messages that imitate official correspondence to obtain credentials or install malware. The message may promise free gold, exclusive loot, a reward, or a faster resolution to an alleged suspension. A familiar logo, a convincing name, or a message that knows your character’s name does not prove it is genuine.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check the destination, not the appearance
- Inspect the complete web address before entering a password. A lookalike domain, extra words, unusual spelling, or a different top-level domain is a warning sign.
- Navigate to Blizzard by typing its address or using a saved official bookmark instead of clicking an unsolicited link.
- Do not provide credentials in response to an unexpected email, whisper, guild message, or direct message.
- Never approve a login prompt you did not initiate. Deny it, change your password from a trusted device, and investigate.
- Do not download an executable presented as an addon, “optimizer,” trade helper, or account-verification tool.
Blizzard employees will never ask you for items or gold. That sentence appears in Blizzard Support’s Trade Scams guidance and is a useful test for anyone claiming to represent support in-game.

Be suspicious of gold and leveling offers
Do not buy gold or leveling services from non-Blizzard sources. Blizzard warns that gold sellers and leveling services can steal buyers’ Battle.net accounts and credit-card details. The immediate offer may look cheaper than earning or playing normally, but handing over credentials or allowing remote access gives the provider a direct path to the account and the computer.
Do not buy game or item codes with in-game currency. Blizzard lists that arrangement among the situations players should avoid. If a deal depends on trust outside the game’s normal interface, assume that the other party can disappear without giving you a practical recovery route.
Keep the computer and addons from exposing the account
Blizzard advises keeping your browser and security software current. Apply operating-system and browser updates, and use reputable security software with current definitions. An outdated browser or a malicious program can capture a password even when the password itself is unique.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Install addons cautiously
- Download addons only from a source you trust and verify that the download is the addon you intended to obtain.
- Never run an executable during addon installation. An addon should not require a separate program that asks for broad system access.
- Be wary of “urgent” addon updates delivered through a pop-up, chat message, or shortened link rather than the source you normally use.
- If an addon may have infected the computer, stop using that device for account logins, run a security scan, and change the Battle.net password after the computer is secured.
Changing the password before removing malware can simply give the attacker the new password. Secure the device first when you have a credible reason to believe software captured your credentials.

Trade gold and materials only through deliberate, visible transactions
Use the supported in-game systems
For ordinary player-to-player exchanges, use the in-game Trade window. Use the Auction House for listed purchases and sales, and use C.O.D. Mail when its displayed terms fit the transaction. These interfaces show the item, quantity, and price before you commit; read the final confirmation rather than relying on what was promised in chat.
| Situation | Safer built-in route | Last check before accepting |
|---|---|---|
| Direct exchange of gold and an item | Trade window | Confirm both item identity and gold amount in the final window. |
| Buying or selling a listed commodity or item | Auction House | Check the unit price, total price, quantity, and the item’s exact quality or level. |
| Sending an item with payment due on delivery | C.O.D. Mail | Verify the C.O.D. amount and recipient before sending. |
Double-check Auction House prices because a mistaken extra digit or a per-unit price can turn a normal purchase into a major loss. Do not give items, gold, or guild-bank permissions to someone you do not trust. Guild rank, a friendly voice, or a long acquaintance is not a substitute for verifying the transaction.
Know the risk of “services for gold”
A 2018 Blizzard Customer Support forum post distinguishes supported transactions through the Trade window, Auction House, and C.O.D. Mail from arrangements in which someone promises to complete a dungeon, achievement, or PvP help in exchange for gold. It describes those service arrangements as unsupported and says losses may be unrecoverable; it also states that trades for real-world currency violate policy. Because that post is dated, treat it as explanatory background rather than a promise about current enforcement. Blizzard’s current support article is the controlling reference for present-day trade-scam outcomes.

In practical terms, if the agreement cannot be completed and documented inside a normal game transaction, you are assuming the risk that the other player disconnects, ignores you, or changes the terms. The common complaints Blizzard lists include being scammed of all your gold, paying for crafting materials and having the other player disconnect, and being ignored after paying for a craft.

Do not let urgency make the decision
Scammers often create a deadline: a raid is starting, an auction is expiring, or a reward will disappear. Pause and inspect the window. If the other player refuses to let you verify the amount, asks you to trade in stages, requests a guild-bank permission, or moves the deal to an outside website, cancel it. A legitimate trade can survive the time needed to read the confirmation screen.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do when a message or trade looks suspicious
- Stop the transaction. Do not click the link, approve a login, send the gold, or grant guild-bank access.
- Capture useful details. Record the character name, realm, item, amount, time, and the exact in-game messages without visiting any link supplied by the other player.
- Use the game’s reporting tools. Report the suspicious player or message through Blizzard’s available in-game reporting route.
- Secure your credentials if you interacted with the lure. From a trusted device, change the Battle.net password and the email password if you entered either one, and review Authenticator or notification activity.
- Scan the computer if you downloaded or ran anything. Remove the suspected software before logging in again.
Do not try to recover the loss by threatening the other player, sending more gold, or accepting a second “verification” trade. Those actions increase the amount at risk and can expose more account information.
If you think the account was stolen
Follow Blizzard’s sequence in Account Hacked. Recovery should happen in this order because an attacker may still have a valid session or access to the computer.
- Use Account Recovery. Start with Blizzard’s official account-recovery process, not a link sent by a stranger. If the email address or password changed, use the recovery options that Blizzard provides for that situation.
- Secure the computer. Disconnect it from sensitive logins while you check for malware, update the operating system and browser, and run a security scan. If the compromise may involve an addon or executable, remove it before changing credentials on that machine.
- Change credentials and add protection. Set a new unique Battle.net password, secure the linked email account, enable email two-factor authentication where available, and add the Battle.net Authenticator in the free Battle.net Mobile App.
- Review account activity. Look for changed contact details, unfamiliar sessions, deleted or transferred characters, missing gold, stripped equipment, emptied materials, and altered guild-bank permissions. Change any other reused passwords.
- Submit a support ticket after the device is secure. Include a clear timeline, character and realm names, what changed, and what you have already done. Do not include your password.
- Continue monitoring. Watch for new email-security alerts, unexpected login requests, and changes to recovery information.
Blizzard’s guidance identifies password reuse, malicious websites, addons, phishing, gold sellers, and account sharing as attack methods worth reviewing. Finding the entry point matters: otherwise an attacker may regain access immediately after recovery.
What recovery can—and cannot—be expected to do
An account takeover and a voluntary trade arrangement are not the same circumstance. If someone gained access to your account, report the compromise through Account Recovery and Support as soon as the computer and credentials are secured. Provide facts and let Blizzard determine what account action is possible.
For a player-to-player trade scam, Blizzard’s current Trade Scams article says it does not restore items or gold in those situations. Blizzard may take action against an account if it verifies a scam, but that does not promise that the victim’s gold or items will be returned. Do not tell another player that a report guarantees restoration; the outcome depends on Blizzard’s investigation and the circumstances.
The most reliable “recovery” is prevention: keep the login private, make the email account equally secure, and use a transaction window whose final terms you can inspect before accepting.

Quick Recap
A practical pre-trade and account-security checklist
Before logging in
- Is the device updated and free of suspicious software?
- Are you using the official Battle.net destination rather than a message link?
- Is the Battle.net password unique, and is the linked email protected by two-factor authentication?
- Is the Battle.net Authenticator enabled in the free Battle.net Mobile App?
Before accepting a trade
- Does the transaction use the Trade window, Auction House, or C.O.D. Mail?
- Have you checked the exact item, quantity, quality, and gold amount in the final confirmation?
- Are you refusing requests for your password, an outside login, a game or item code, or guild-bank permissions?
- Would you still accept the deal if the other player disconnected immediately afterward?
After a suspected compromise
- Have you stopped logging in on the potentially infected computer?
- Have you completed Account Recovery through Blizzard’s official site?
- Have you secured the computer before changing passwords on it?
- Have you enabled the Authenticator and secured the email account?
- Have you submitted a support ticket only after the device is secure?
