Spoilers: The Sacred Sword quest is a New Game+ sequence, and whether you purify the sword affects both ending eligibility and the weapon’s properties. Complete the Crimson Water puzzle before collecting the sword; the walkthrough source says you cannot return to that puzzle afterward. The walkthroughs cited here are fan references, not official Konami documentation.
What to do before collecting the Sacred Sword
In New Game+, reach the Hermitage of Crimson Water and solve its bell puzzle before picking up the sword. The sword quest also includes five Jizo offerings across the Ebisugaoka sequence; after the final offering, the sword appears at the base of the Divine Tree.
- From the Dark Shrine Main Hall, take the southeast metal door, then the immediate left door. Climb the stairs and fight through the area. Use Focus at the Inari-sama-sealed wall to enter the Hermitage of Crimson Water.
- Enter the central building and collect the Hotei-sama sitting Cross-Legged bottle.
- Complete the Crimson Water puzzle by ringing the bells in this order: stone, water, tree. Ring the stone-symbol bell on the balcony overlooking the garden; the water-symbol bell is on the eastern island by the great stone; the tree-symbol bell is across the stone bridge from the second bell.
- Complete the five Jizo offerings during the Ebisugaoka sequence: Faded Bride Doll, Rusted Flask, Broken Japanese Geta Sandals, Cracked Hibachi Brazier, and Dad’s Old Kitchen Knife.
- After the final offering, travel to the Divine Tree at the forgotten shrine and collect the Sacred Sword at its base.
The Crimson Water puzzle is the hard prerequisite: Silent Hill Memories’ puzzle walkthrough says it must be completed before taking the sword because the player cannot return to solve it afterward. The Jizo offerings have their own stage-by-stage progression gates; the fan guide says later offerings remain reachable until entering the Shimizu Residence. For exact offering routes and timing, consult a full walkthrough with a map or screenshots rather than assuming all five can be collected at any point.
Where to purify the Sacred Sword
After obtaining the sword, return to Ebisugaoka and go to the old Oinari-sama shrine in the northwest forest. Interact with the basin there to purify the sword. If the Crimson Water puzzle was completed earlier, the basin is ready for purification. Silent Hill Memories summarizes the timing: “Complete the Crimson Water Puzzle, so you can purify the Sacred Sword later in the game after you return to Ebisugaoka.”

What purification changes
Purification changes both route eligibility and the weapon’s behavior. The available walkthroughs describe the concrete trade-offs as follows; they do not provide a numerical damage comparison.
| Feature | Unpurified (cursed) sword | Purified sword |
|---|---|---|
| Ending eligibility | Purification is not done; walkthroughs state this is not eligible for Endings 2 and 4. | Required for Endings 2 and 4, according to walkthrough sources. |
| Self-repair | Retains self-repair. | Self-repair is removed. |
| Protection | Retains the sword’s protection effect. | Protection is removed. |
| Damage and enemy behavior | The fan guide describes it as dealing stronger damage and having a special permanent-kill property against some enemies. | The fan guide characterizes purification as a damage nerf; the weapon reference still classifies the purified blade as a light weapon. No numerical damage change is stated. |
| Repair items | Self-repair means it does not rely on Toolkits in the same way. | Requires Toolkits for repair. |
The sword offering quest is required for Endings 3 and 4, while purification is required for Endings 2 and 4, according to the walkthrough sources. Those are separate conditions: collecting the sword through the offering sequence and purifying it are not interchangeable steps.

Does progress carry into another run?
The fan guide reports that Jizo offering progress persists into future runs on the save file. A weapon reference says that in New Game++, the sword can be found at the second Jizo statue. These are fan-source descriptions of carryover, not an official guarantee; treat them as route guidance rather than a substitute for checking your current save and game version.
