Keep OBS connected to YouTube, create one scene for your videos and another for your branded holding screen, then switch between them without stopping the live stream. OBS can loop a file or playlist, but its documented playlist controls do not automatically switch to a separate holding scene at each video boundary; use manual switching or a separately tested automation workflow for that.
What you need
- An encoder such as OBS, a stable computer and internet connection, and a YouTube stream URL and stream key.
- Your video files or playlist, plus a holding-screen image or short video. Check that your artwork is readable at the stream’s aspect ratio and leaves important text within safe margins.
- If you want transitions without an operator, a scene-automation tool or hosted playout workflow that you have tested for the exact behavior you need.
YouTube requires the encoder to send the stream to the stream URL using the stream key. Treat the key as sensitive: YouTube describes it as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the connection workflow, and its stream-key guidance covers keys.
Set up the video and holding scenes in OBS
1. Create or schedule the YouTube stream
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the connection details. Keep the key private; do not show it in your stream or screenshots.
2. Build the program scene
- In OBS, create a scene named Program.
- Add the video source. For a single local file, use a Media Source and enable its loop option if you want that file to repeat.
- For multiple local files, add a VLC Video source, create the playlist, and enable looping as needed. VLC must be installed for the VLC Video source to work.
- Check the source order, framing, and audio in the OBS preview. OBS documents looping and playlist playback, but those controls govern media playback; they do not establish automatic switching to a different scene between playlist items. OBS Media Sources documentation (dated January 11, 2022) describes these source options.
3. Build the holding-screen scene
- Create a separate scene named Holding screen.
- Add an Image Source for static branded artwork, or a Media Source for an animated holding clip.
- Keep the message brief—for example, “Next video starts soon”—and verify legibility, aspect ratio, safe margins, and audio in the preview. If the holding clip has sound, decide whether it should continue playing while this scene is active.
Keep the same stream live while switching scenes
- Start streaming from OBS and confirm that YouTube receives the encoder feed in Live Control Room before making the broadcast public.
- When a gap begins, switch from Program to Holding screen in OBS. Switch back when the next video is ready.
- Keep OBS connected and sending content throughout. Stopping the encoder feed ends the broadcast; changing scenes while the encoder remains connected changes the program without intentionally ending that stream.
If playlist boundaries must trigger scene changes unattended, select and test dedicated scene automation or hosted playout. Verify that it detects the end of each item, switches to the holding scene at the right time, returns to the program, and behaves as expected after a restart. Playlist looping alone is not evidence that these transitions will happen.
Use YouTube’s away slate for a temporary break
YouTube also documents a temporary away slate controlled through Live Control Room. This is an option for a short operator break, not a documented playlist scheduler. YouTube’s instructions use an overlay URL added as an OBS Browser Source; follow the current YouTube away-slate guidance and test the result before relying on it. The overlay does not affect other audio sources, and audio from a video slate may need to be included in the stream’s audio settings. Confirm the intended audio behavior in a test stream.

Ways to run the stream unattended

End the broadcast correctly
When you intend to end the stream, stop the encoder feed and use the end-stream controls in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; confirm the archive and its settings in YouTube Studio. See YouTube’s encoder workflow.
Troubleshoot common problems
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Check that OBS is using the intended YouTube stream URL and key, that the key was copied correctly, and that the encoder is actually streaming. Do not share the key; rotate it if exposed.
- The video does not loop: Confirm that looping is enabled on the Media Source or VLC Video source as appropriate. For a VLC playlist, make sure VLC is installed and that the intended files appear in the playlist.
- The holding screen never appears between playlist items: Playlist loop settings do not document automatic switching to another scene. Switch scenes manually or configure a separate automation system, then test item-end detection and return transitions.
- The holding screen is cropped or hard to read: Check the artwork’s aspect ratio and the OBS preview, reposition or resize the source, and keep text away from the frame edges.
- Audio continues during the away slate: The slate overlay does not affect other audio sources. Review OBS audio sources and YouTube’s slate-audio settings, then test the configuration.
- The stream ends when you switch content: Make scene changes in OBS while the encoder continues sending its feed. Stopping content from the encoder ends the stream.
Check copyright and YouTube rules before leaving a stream running
Use videos, music, artwork, and other material you have the rights to use in a live broadcast. A continuous stream does not change copyright obligations. Review YouTube’s current Community Guidelines and YouTube Partner Program monetization policies if monetization or reused material is involved. A branded holding screen is a presentation choice, not permission to rebroadcast someone else’s content.
