Set OBS to YouTube’s recommended encoder settings, test the stream before launch, and make a separate local recording if you need a dependable replay: YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured in its archive.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel that is verified and eligible for live streaming. If you are enabling live streaming for the first time, activation can take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- OBS Studio installed on a Windows PC capable of encoding your chosen resolution and frame rate continuously.
- A dependable internet connection with enough sustained upload bandwidth for the full stream, plus headroom for normal fluctuations.
- Optional: enough local storage for a separate recording if you need to retain the content.
A 24/7 schedule is an operating goal, not an uptime guarantee. The sources cited here do not establish a guaranteed uninterrupted setup for Windows and OBS.
Choose OBS settings for YouTube
For a straightforward SDR setup, YouTube recommends H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS and recommends RTMPS where available. Its guidance also lists H.265 and AV1, but hardware support varies; do not assume every PC can encode those formats equally well. Check the current YouTube encoder settings table before choosing a different resolution, frame rate, or codec.

These figures are YouTube’s recommended ingestion bitrates, not a promise that your PC can encode smoothly or your connection can sustain the stream. Higher resolution and frame rate require more upload capacity and encoding performance. Pick a setting your hardware and connection can maintain, rather than selecting the highest option by default.

YouTube recommends a keyframe interval of two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. In OBS, set the bitrate mode to CBR and the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. Use the matching bitrate for your intended output as a starting point, then test with representative motion and audio.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Confirm channel eligibility. Verify that live streaming is enabled and that the channel has no live-streaming restrictions. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
- Create an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Copy the server URL and stream key shown there, or choose YouTube as OBS’s streaming service if that option is available. Follow YouTube’s current setup flow if labels differ.
- Keep the stream key private. Anyone with the key may be able to connect an encoder to your stream. Do not post it, include it in a recording, or share it publicly.
- Configure OBS. Open OBS’s stream settings, select YouTube or enter the server URL and key from Live Control Room, then set the video output and encoder settings you chose. The exact OBS labels can vary by version.
- Start a controlled test. Before announcing the channel, start an unlisted or otherwise controlled stream. Include typical movement and audio so the test reflects the real workload.
Test upload capacity and verify the live feed
Measure outbound upload speed, not just download speed. YouTube recommends keeping the total stream bitrate within your available upload capacity and leaving 20% headroom; shared networks may leave less bandwidth available to the streaming PC. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

- Check that the Live Control Room preview shows the intended picture and sound before relying on the public watch page.
- Watch stream health and real-time metrics in Live Control Room while the test runs. YouTube explains these in its live-stream metrics guide.
- Check the stream from the channel or watch page and a mobile device, and listen for audio problems as well as checking the picture. YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend checking accessibility and monitoring audio and video.
- If you record locally, confirm that the file is growing and that the destination has enough free space for the intended recording period.
Plan separately for a 24/7 feed and a replay
A live feed and a retained replay are different outcomes. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. A continuous 24/7 broadcast therefore should not be treated as a dependable single replay. Read YouTube’s archive guidance.
If keeping the content matters, make a separate local recording and verify that it is being written correctly. YouTube recommends a local archive backup; check the recording file’s size while the stream runs and ensure the storage location can hold the material you intend to retain. For an ongoing channel, decide how recordings will be rotated or moved before disk space runs out.

Keep the PC-based stream running and recover from problems
For a local OBS setup, the PC, OBS, network, and power all remain part of the operating chain. Keep OBS and the Live Control Room available for checks, and establish who will notice an interruption and restart or investigate the stream. The reviewed documentation does not establish guaranteed automatic recovery or an end-to-end failover design for a Windows PC and OBS.
If OBS reports dropped frames or intermittent disconnections, investigate the network path as well as the encoder. The OBS connection troubleshooting guide covers network-related causes. A wired Ethernet connection or a UPS may help address particular network or brief power issues, but neither guarantees uninterrupted operation.
