On a compatible Fanatec setup, turn on the wheel base and short-press its power button until the button’s LED turns green. Green indicates Xbox mode. The mode is available only when an Xbox-licensed Fanatec steering wheel is attached.
Switch the wheel base to Xbox mode
- Check the wheel: Make sure the attached steering wheel is an Xbox-licensed Fanatec model. A wheel that works with a PC is not necessarily licensed for Xbox.
- Turn on the base: On a CSL DD, short-press the base’s power button to cycle through operating modes. Stop when the power-button LED is green. Fanatec’s mode guide identifies green as Xbox mode; the CSL DD manual gives the short-press instruction in section 5.3.
- Use a wheel shortcut only if appropriate: Some steering wheels have a mode-switch shortcut. Check the quick guide for your exact wheel. Fanatec cites Select + Y as an example used by many wheels, but the combination varies by model.
- Connect to a supported console: Connect the setup to an Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S. If the console does not recognize it, verify the wheel’s Xbox licensing and the green mode indicator, then check for current firmware and consult the documentation for your exact base and wheel.
What the mode light means
For the CSL DD, Fanatec documents green for Xbox mode, red for PC mode, and yellow for compatibility mode. Use the indicator on the base rather than assuming a button shortcut has switched modes.
Why a Fanatec wheel may not connect to Xbox
The steering wheel is not Xbox-licensed
Fanatec places the Xbox security chip in select steering wheels. The licensed wheel enables Xbox recognition for connected Fanatec peripherals; the base alone, or a PC-compatible wheel without Xbox licensing, does not establish Xbox compatibility. Check Fanatec’s Xbox steering-wheel information and the exact product documentation before buying or troubleshooting components.
The console is outside the supported generations
Fanatec lists Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S as supported. Its compatibility FAQ says the original Xbox and Xbox 360 are not supported.

- Full-size GT3-style wheel: 300 mm diameter with overmolded rubber grips with 50 Shore A hardness for comfort and durability
- Designed for Xbox: Connect this wheel to any Fanatec Direct Drive Base to enable compatibility with Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One. Also compatible with Windows PC. PS5 and PS4 compatibility is possible if attached to a PlayStation licensed Base
- Magnetic shifter paddles: Custom designed rocker paddle made from anodized aluminum allow up and down-shifts with one hand (possible on both sides)
- Analog paddles: Support four switchable modes - clutch bite-point, clutch/handbrake, brake/throttle, and mappable axis mode
- Comprehensive inputs: In addition to the shifters and clutch paddles, the wheel features nine push buttons, two Multi-Position Switches with encoders, two 2-way toggle switches, and a 7-way FunkySwitch
Firmware or game support is limiting recognition or controls
Fanatec says current firmware is needed to maintain Xbox compatibility. Also, console recognition does not mean every button, display, RevLED, or additional input will work in every game: some inputs may duplicate another control or have no assigned function, and advanced features depend on Xbox OS, firmware, and the game.
Fanatec’s FAQ, at the time it was updated, named F1 25 after its 2026 update and Forza Motorsport (2023) as titles supporting features such as displays, RevLEDs, and additional inputs. Game support can change, so check current firmware notes and the game’s current support information rather than treating that list as permanent.
