The code must be intended for Steam; a key for another platform or service cannot be converted into a Steam license.
Redeem a Steam key in the client
- Check the code type. Confirm that the retailer, game packaging, or purchase email identifies it as a Steam key or Steam product code. Steam explains how to recognize codes intended for Steam registration at Steam Support.
- Sign in to Steam. Use the account where you want the game added; the license will be registered to that account.
- Open the activation menu. In the Steam client, choose Games > Activate a Product on Steam… Steam also documents a route through + ADD A GAME… at the lower left: select Activate a Product on Steam….
- Follow the on-screen instructions. Enter the product code when prompted and complete activation. Steam also supports product-key registration through a browser; see Steam’s activation support page.
- Find the game in your Library. After successful registration, install it whenever you’re ready. Keep the key private: Steam says a registered key can serve as proof of purchase or account ownership in some cases.
Make sure you have the right kind of code
Steam product key
A retail or digital Steam product key registers a game license to a Steam account through the activation flow. It may be printed inside game packaging or included in an online retailer’s receipt email. The code must specifically be for Steam registration.
A key for another service
Some Steam games provide a separate key for a third-party client or service. That code is not another Steam product key. If it fails on the outside service or has already been used there, Steam says to contact the game’s developer or publisher because it cannot access third-party registration systems. Steam Wallet code
A Steam Wallet code adds funds to your Wallet for eligible Steam purchases; it does not add a specific game license. Wallet cards are redeemed on Steam, and their balance can be used for products including games and hardware. Never give a Wallet code to someone demanding it as payment. Non-Steam game
Add a Non-Steam Game… adds a shortcut to your Steam Library for a game that is not registered on Steam. It does not redeem a product code or turn the game into a Steam license. Use the activation option for a Steam key. Steam outlines the distinction in its Library guidance.
Fix common CD key errors
“Invalid Product Code”
First check that the code was meant for Steam, not another platform or service. If the seller advertised it as a Steam key, contact the seller with the exact error and your purchase details. Keep your receipt and correspondence.
“Duplicate key”
A duplicate message means the key has already been registered. If you bought it as new, preserve your proof of purchase and contact the retailer or seller. Steam’s product-key guidance covers invalid and duplicate codes.
The key is missing
If a game already in your Steam Library requires a key, right-click the game and look under Manage > CD keys. This option is not available for every game, and not all games require a key. If a retail product was supposed to include one but did not, contact the retailer about an exchange or refund. See Steam’s CD key help.

The key was revoked
A publisher can revoke a key—for example, if it was time-limited or obtained fraudulently. Steam recommends contacting the third-party seller about a refund. To play a game after its key is revoked, you need another valid purchase or key, or a gift copy. More information is available in Steam’s revoked-key guidance.
The key is region-restricted
Restrictions vary by publisher; there is no single rule that applies to every retail key. Check the publisher’s or retailer’s territory information before buying. Steam says it cannot remove CD key restrictions and cannot refund a purchase made from a third-party retailer. Follow the stated region eligibility rather than using a VPN or proxy to disguise your location; Steam warns that bypassing regional rules can violate its terms and lead to account restrictions. Protect your key and account
Do not activate keys from sources you do not trust. Steam warns that keys from marketplaces and trade forums may be fake, already used, for a different game, region-restricted, or linked to attempts to claim account ownership. Never share your Steam login details or hand a key to a stranger. Steam’s safety guidance says, “Do not activate CD Keys from untrusted sources”; read Contested Steam account ownership.
