To use a seed on an Aternos server, create a new world with it: stop the server, open Worlds → Generate, enter the seed, and generate the world. A seed does not safely change terrain in a world you have already explored. If you want to keep your current builds, download that world before switching.
Before you generate the world
- Check the server edition. Aternos supports both Java and Bedrock servers. A seed guide made for one edition may not match the other, so check the edition and Minecraft version listed by the guide.
- Copy the seed exactly. Preserve any leading minus sign and avoid extra spaces.
- Back up a world you care about. Generating another world can change which world your server uses. Download the current world first if you might want its builds or progress later.
A Minecraft seed is an input used to generate a world. The same seed is not a guarantee of identical terrain or structure locations across Java and Bedrock, Minecraft versions, world types, generator settings, or setups with generation-changing mods, plugins, or datapacks.

How to add a seed to an Aternos world
- Log in to Aternos and select the server.
- Stop the server. This is a sensible safeguard before changing the world.
- Open Worlds in the server panel.
- Click Generate.
- Enter the seed exactly as provided and choose any world-generation options you need.
- Click Generate to create the world. If the panel asks which world the server should use, select the one you just generated.
- Return to the server page and click Start.
- Once the server is online, join using the address shown on its server page. Check that the terrain matches the expected starting area.

What happens to your current world?
The new seed generates a new world; it does not convert your existing map. Builds, inventories, farms, explored areas, and player progress from the old world will not automatically appear in the new one. A seed affects generated terrain, not the position of builds you have already made.

If the old world is still available in the Worlds section, you can select it again there. If you replace or switch away from a world without a backup, do not assume its contents can be reconstructed from the seed: a seed recreates generated terrain, not your saved player progress and builds.
How to back up the old world
- Stop the server.
- Open Worlds and select the world you want to preserve.
- Click Download and save the ZIP archive somewhere safe.

How to find the seed of an existing world
In Aternos, open Worlds, select the world, click Options, and inspect its level.dat information for the seed. Aternos explains this method in its seed guide.
On Java Edition, /seed may also display the current seed when supported by the server software and you have the required access. You can enter a command in the online server console or in-game with the necessary permissions. It reveals the current seed; it does not change it. The Aternos community has also documented this distinction in its historical seed-help thread.

Why your world may not match the seed guide
| Check | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Seed entry | Make sure the full value was copied, including a leading minus sign. Remove accidental spaces. A text seed and a numeric seed are not interchangeable unless Minecraft converts the same input. |
| Edition and version | Confirm whether the guide was made for Java or Bedrock and which Minecraft version it used. Terrain, biome placement, and structures may differ between editions or versions. |
| World type and settings | Check whether the guide uses default terrain, Superflat, Large Biomes, Amplified, or other generation settings. Different settings can produce different results. |
| Mods, plugins, and datapacks | World-generation changes can make a vanilla seed guide inapplicable. Check the guide for any required generator, mod, plugin, or datapack. |
| Active world | Confirm in Worlds that the generated world is the one the server is using, then restart the server after changing it. |
| Already-generated world | If you only edited a seed value on an existing map, its old chunks were not regenerated. Use Worlds → Generate to create a new world with the seed. |
Can you change the seed without starting over?
Not safely through the normal Aternos workflow. Existing chunks remain generated, while newly generated chunks can use the changed seed and create abnormal terrain where the two meet. Aternos warns against changing the seed value on an existing world for this reason. If you want a different seed, generate a separate new world rather than editing the seed of a world you are already playing.

How to keep your builds while trying a seed
- Keep the existing world: leave it selected and do not replace it if you only want to preserve your current playthrough.
- Test another world: download the current world first, then generate the seeded world. You can switch between worlds through the Worlds section if both remain available in the panel.
- Use a prepared map: create or configure the world locally, then transfer it using Aternos’s current world-upload workflow. Follow the upload instructions in the Aternos Minecraft Help Center, since the exact controls and supported formats can change.
