To put mods on an Aternos server, first install a mod loader that supports them, then add the mods through Aternos’s catalog. Every player must also use the matching Minecraft version, loader, and mod versions on their computer. This guide covers Minecraft Java Edition; Bedrock add-ons use a different process.
Install individual mods on an Aternos server
- Choose a mod loader. In your Aternos server, open Software and install a loader supported by the mod you want. Aternos lists Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, and Quilt. Forge has a large selection of mods, while Fabric offers different features and performance characteristics; the right choice is the one your mod requires. See Aternos’s Java mod installation guide.
- Add mods from the catalog. Open the mods section and search Aternos’s catalog, which includes projects from CurseForge and Modrinth. Choose releases compatible with the server’s Minecraft version and loader.
- Install required dependencies. Some mods rely on other mods. Check the Aternos listing and, if needed, the project description on CurseForge or Modrinth. For example, Tinkers’ Construct requires Mantle.
- Set up each player’s computer. Each person joining needs the same Minecraft version, loader and loader version, and mod versions as the server. You can use a launcher such as Prism Launcher, Modrinth App, or CurseForge App; alternatively, place the mods in the local
.minecraftmods folder. - Start the server and join with the matching setup. If the client reports an error, verify Minecraft, loader, mod, and dependency versions first.
Should you install individual mods or a modpack?
Choose individual mods when you want to select the content and dependencies yourself. Choose a modpack when you want its bundled setup. Aternos supports a separate installation workflow for CurseForge and Modrinth packs; see its Java modpack installation guide.

Aternos says it updates packs automatically; use the latest pack version when troubleshooting. Pack availability and supported Minecraft versions can change, so check the current catalog before coordinating everyone’s installation.
What if a mod is not listed?
First search under the project’s other name and check whether it supports a Minecraft version available for your server. If it is still missing, you can submit it through Aternos’s suggestion process.

Aternos considers whether a project is hosted on an accepted platform and directly downloadable there, reasonably popular, actively developed, free, and compatible with its service. A suggested modpack also needs server files. Submissions are reviewed manually, which can take days or weeks; Aternos sets no fixed download threshold and assesses popularity case by case.
Aternos points users who need custom uploads and full file access to exaroton, its paid hosting service. That is a separate hosting option, not a way to upload arbitrary files to an Aternos server.

Are you looking for a plugin rather than a mod?
Mods and plugins use different server software and installation paths. Java mods run with a mod loader such as Forge or Fabric; plugins need plugin-capable software. Aternos lists PaperMC, Purpur, and Spigot for plugins. If you only want server-side commands or features, check whether a plugin is the content you need. See Aternos’s plugin installation guide.
