To put a game in full screen, launch it, click the window showing the game, and press Alt+Enter. To start games in full screen automatically, enable Configuration → Emulator → Start games in fullscreen mode.
Toggle fullscreen with Alt+Enter
- Start a game in RPCS3.
- Click the game-rendering window so it has focus. The emulator’s game-list window is separate.
- Press Alt+Enter to switch to fullscreen. Press it again to return to windowed mode.
RPCS3 issue discussion also documents double-clicking the game window as an alternative toggle, though behavior can depend on the build. RPCS3 issue discussion. Alt+Enter is the better-supported shortcut; reports of F11 are inconsistent, so do not assume it works in every build.
Make games start in fullscreen
- Open Configuration in RPCS3.
- Open the Emulator tab.
- Enable Start games in fullscreen mode, then apply or save the setting.
- If a game is already running, close and relaunch it to test the change.
Recent RPCS3 release notes say fullscreen startup was enabled by default in a recent build. Check the box rather than relying on the default: saved settings, older builds, and per-game configurations can differ. Menu wording or placement may also vary between versions.
Fullscreen does not necessarily remove black bars
Fullscreen controls how the game window occupies the display; it does not require the picture to stretch to every edge. RPCS3 has separate controls for aspect ratio and Stretch to Display Area in its GPU configuration.

- Preserve the aspect ratio to keep the image’s proportions correct. A 4:3 game on a widescreen monitor may have side bars by design.
- Try Stretch to Display Area if filling more of the monitor matters more than exact proportions. Depending on the game, stretching can distort the image or interact with cropping.
- Do not raise resolution scale to remove bars. Resolution scale changes rendering resolution, not the aspect-ratio decision.
Borderless and exclusive fullscreen
A borderless fullscreen window covers the display while remaining a windowed presentation. Exclusive fullscreen uses a different display-presentation mode and may affect resolution switching, overlays, capture, HDR, and alt-tab behavior. The difference can be less noticeable on some modern operating systems and drivers.
For builds that expose it, look under Configuration → GPU → Advanced for Exclusive Fullscreen Mode. The available choices and labels can vary by version and graphics backend. - Automatic: Let RPCS3 and the graphics driver decide.
- Prefer borderless fullscreen: A useful first choice for recording, overlays, HDR integrations, streaming, or frequent alt-tabbing.
- Disable exclusive fullscreen: Try this if exclusive mode causes a black screen, display switching, or capture trouble.
Exclusive mode is not automatically faster. Presentation behavior depends on the operating system, driver, renderer, display, and other software.
Fix fullscreen problems
- Check focus. Click the game output—not the game list—and press Alt+Enter again.
- Try the alternate toggle. Double-click the game window if your build supports it.
- Check the startup option. Confirm Configuration → Emulator → Start games in fullscreen mode is enabled, then restart the game.
- Check per-game settings. A custom configuration may override global behavior. RPCS3’s FAQ covers custom configurations.
- For a black screen, try borderless or windowed mode. If windowed mode renders correctly, switch away from exclusive fullscreen and test again.
- Isolate capture or overlay conflicts. Temporarily disable overlays or capture hooks, then test fullscreen again.
- Check graphics software if the issue remains. Test the other available renderer and update drivers from your GPU manufacturer. RPCS3’s setup guides recommend Vulkan and note that OpenGL can be significantly slower; Vulkan is not a guaranteed fullscreen fix.
- Update an old or unofficial build. Get official Windows or Linux builds from the RPCS3 download page.
RPCS3 generally recommends changing exposed settings through its interface rather than editing configuration files manually; see its FAQ. On Linux, Steam Deck, and multi-monitor setups, the desktop compositor or monitor placement can also affect how fullscreen appears.

Does fullscreen improve performance?
There is no guaranteed FPS boost from fullscreen. Results can vary with the renderer, operating system, graphics driver, overlays, and display mode. Renderer choice is a separate setting from fullscreen.
