Important update: Xbox Live Gold was discontinued on September 14, 2023. Its replacement in March 2024 was Xbox Game Pass Core. Microsoft’s current U.S. storefront uses the name Xbox Game Pass Essential for its entry-level plan, so old Gold guides, prices, and game lists are no longer reliable buying advice.
What Xbox Live Gold was
Xbox Live Gold was Microsoft’s paid membership for Xbox consoles. It enabled online multiplayer in paid games and offered member discounts, Free Play Days promotions, and the Games with Gold monthly-games program. Some benefits could also be shared with other profiles on a console designated as the subscriber’s home Xbox, subject to Microsoft’s sharing rules.
Gold is now a historical product name, not a subscription to purchase. Microsoft announced that it would become Xbox Game Pass Core on September 14, 2023. Microsoft’s announcement also set the end of Games with Gold for September 1, 2023.
When Xbox Live Gold ended
- July 17, 2023: Microsoft announced Game Pass Core as Gold’s successor.
- September 1, 2023: Games with Gold ended.
- September 14, 2023: Xbox Live Gold memberships became Game Pass Core.
Existing Gold members were transferred to Core automatically; Microsoft said they did not need to take action. Old Gold retail cards were expected to redeem as Core while supplies lasted, but redemption can depend on the code, its region and validity, and Microsoft’s current policies. Do not assume every old card will work or convert the same way.

What replaced Gold in March 2024: Game Pass Core
In March 2024, the direct replacement was Xbox Game Pass Core. Microsoft described it as an evolution of Gold: it retained online console multiplayer, member discounts, and Free Play Days, while adding a curated library of included games. Core worked on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.
At launch, Microsoft announced Core at $9.99 per month or $59.99 per year. Those were 2023 launch prices, not a current quote. The included collection launched with more than 25 games; Microsoft said the catalog could vary by country and change over time, with updates planned two or three times per year. Its launch list included games such as Among Us, Celeste, Dead Cells, DOOM Eternal, Fallout 4, Forza Horizon 4, Gears 5, Grounded, Psychonauts 2, Stardew Valley, and Vampire Survivors. Those examples are not a promise that a title remains included today. See Microsoft’s launch catalog and Core details for the original list.

Core was not simply Gold under a new name: it introduced a rotating included-game catalog, but did not continue Games with Gold’s monthly claim-and-keep model.
What happened to Games with Gold games?
Games with Gold ended on September 1, 2023. Microsoft distinguished between the older Xbox 360 titles and Xbox One titles redeemed through the program:

- Xbox 360 games redeemed through Games with Gold remain in the player’s library regardless of subscription status, according to Microsoft’s transition announcement.
- Xbox One Games with Gold titles remain playable only while the account has an eligible Game Pass Core or Ultimate subscription.
That distinction is why “Games with Gold games are yours forever” is not accurate for every title.
Do you need a subscription to play online?
The answer depends on the game and platform. On an Xbox console, paid games generally require an eligible Game Pass plan for online multiplayer. Free-to-play multiplayer games generally do not require a paid console multiplayer subscription. Local multiplayer played on the same console does not generally require one. PC multiplayer has different rules; Xbox console subscription requirements should not be assumed to apply to Windows games.

In practical terms, if you only play free-to-play online games on an Xbox console, you generally do not need to subscribe just to access their multiplayer. Check the game and current Xbox terms for exceptions. Cloud gaming is also different from online console multiplayer: multiplayer connects players in an installed game, while cloud gaming streams a supported game from Microsoft’s servers. A plan that enables console multiplayer does not necessarily include every cloud-gaming feature.
Which Xbox plan makes sense now?
“Game Pass” is not one uniform product. The right choice depends on whether you need console multiplayer, want games from a subscription catalog, play on PC, or will use cloud gaming and other higher-tier benefits.

| What you want | Practical direction |
|---|---|
| Online multiplayer for paid Xbox console games | Choose an eligible entry-level Game Pass plan. |
| A smaller included game catalog as well as console multiplayer | Consider the entry-level plan if you will play enough included games to justify the cost. |
| A broader rotating catalog or benefits such as day-one releases | Compare higher tiers and confirm the specific benefit is included in the plan available in your region. |
| PC games | Compare PC Game Pass or a plan that explicitly includes PC access; console multiplayer requirements do not map directly to PC. |
| Cloud gaming | Choose a plan that explicitly includes streaming, then check supported devices and games. |
| Only free-to-play console multiplayer | You generally do not need a paid plan for online access. |
| One or two games you expect to keep playing | Compare buying them outright with a recurring subscription; purchasing a paid game does not necessarily remove the console multiplayer requirement. |
A subscription is more compelling if you play paid games online, make regular use of its included catalog or discounts, and accept that games can leave the catalog. Buying outright may suit someone who plays only a few titles and wants them in their library. Discounts vary by title and offer; do not count a discount as a saving unless it applies to a game you already intend to buy.

As of the U.S. Microsoft Store listing observed August 18, 2026, the entry-level product is labeled Xbox Game Pass Essential, not Gold or Core. The listing displayed $24.99 for three months and described online console multiplayer, more than 50 console and PC games, streaming, and other benefits. That is a dated U.S. storefront observation, not a guaranteed price or offer for another date or country. Recheck the live listing before subscribing: plan names, prices, benefits, billing periods, and availability can change by market.
Microsoft’s plan pages warn that game availability, features, and catalog size vary by plan, region, time, and platform. Compare the current options on Xbox Game Pass deals and plan details and use the Game Pass catalog to check what is available for your platform. For the U.S. Essential listing, see the Microsoft Store product page.
Quick Recap
If you have an old Gold code or cannot play online
Before redeeming an old code
- Check that the code is valid and intended for your region.
- Use the official Microsoft/Xbox code redemption flow, and confirm the product or membership it will provide before relying on it.
- Avoid unofficial marketplaces, where a code’s validity and origin may be uncertain.
- After redemption, review recurring billing and renewal settings on your account.
If online play still does not work
- Confirm the subscription is active on the Microsoft account being used to play.
- Check the console’s connection to Xbox services and the game’s server status.
- Check whether the game requires a separate publisher account.
- Verify that the subscription has not expired and that recurring billing did not fail.
- Confirm whether the game is free-to-play or paid; their console multiplayer requirements differ.
- If you expect another profile to share subscription benefits, check the console’s home Xbox setting and Microsoft’s current sharing rules.
