Create a Minecraft profile in the CurseForge app, choose a Minecraft version and modloader, then add content that matches both. Launch the profile to check that it starts. When it is ready, use Share Profile to export a ZIP or generate a private profile code; publishing a public project requires a separately structured ZIP and project-page details.
Start with a Minecraft profile
CurseForge profiles collect the settings and files needed to launch a custom modded instance of Minecraft: Java Edition. In the CurseForge app, open the Minecraft section and click Create.
- Enter a profile name.
- Choose the Minecraft version you want to play.
- Choose a modloader: Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, or Quilt. Vanilla is also listed in the app, but it is unmodified and does not support mods.
These choices define the compatibility target for the pack. A mod needs to support both the profile’s Minecraft version and its modloader; support for one does not imply support for the other. CurseForge’s app guidance identifies Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, and Quilt as modded loader families, and marks incompatible combinations when either requirement differs. Add mods and other content
Open the profile you created and select Add More Content. From there, find and install the mods, resource packs, or maps you want in the pack. Check each item against the profile’s Minecraft version and modloader before installing it. Some mods are not available for every loader.

The app can create a profile based on the version and loader of a selected mod. Use its advanced options if you need to choose a different supported configuration. Avoid assuming that a group of individually compatible mods will work together: compatibility of the complete combination is only established by launching and checking that particular profile.
Launch and check the profile
When you have added the content, launch the profile from the CurseForge app. If it fails to start, review the profile’s Minecraft version and modloader, then check whether each installed mod supports both. Remove or replace a mod that does not match the profile, and try again. A successful launch is a useful basic check, but it is not a guarantee that every feature or later gameplay situation will work as intended.

Customize an existing modpack
To change a pack you installed from CurseForge, open its profile options and enable Allow content management. Then use Add More Content to add items or toggle installed mods.
There is an update trade-off: while content management is enabled, the pack cannot be updated or changed to another version. If you turn content management off, a later pack update can overwrite your custom changes. To preserve both the original pack and your customized version, apply an update to a new profile rather than the modified one. (CurseForge Support, “Customizing Modpacks,” modified 2025-08-18.)

Share the pack privately
For friends or another private group, open the profile’s context menu and choose Share Profile. You can export a ZIP and choose what to include; CurseForge says the config and mods are generally sufficient when you are sharing without worlds. Alternatively, a logged-in user can generate a profile code. CurseForge states that a generated code is valid for seven days. The recipient can import the ZIP or enter the code in the CurseForge app. A ZIP must use CurseForge’s profile export structure; an arbitrary folder compressed into a ZIP may not import as a profile.

Prepare a pack for public submission
Public project submission is different from sending a private profile to friends. Export through the profile’s Share Profile flow, then prepare the project ZIP in CurseForge’s documented format:

overridesfolder holds included configuration and other files.
The project page also needs a useful one-line summary and a description explaining the pack’s purpose and distinctive features. CurseForge’s submission guidance specifies a project avatar of at least 400 × 400 pixels. If the pack contains mods that are not hosted on CurseForge, list and credit them in the description. The guide says Vanilla profiles are not supported for project submission and sets requirements for third-party mods; check CurseForge’s live submission rules when preparing an upload because moderation requirements can change.
