WordPress Quick Edit lets you change a post’s metadata and workflow settings directly from Posts > All Posts, without opening the full editor. Hover over a post title, choose Quick Edit, change the fields you need, and select Update. You can revise the title, slug, date, author, categories, tags, visibility, comments, pingbacks or trackbacks, status, and sticky setting. You cannot rewrite paragraphs, blocks, images, embeds, or other post-body content there; those changes require the post’s full Edit screen.

What WordPress Quick Edit does
Quick Edit is an inline panel that opens inside the posts table. It is designed for fast changes to information stored about a post rather than changes to the article itself. Because the panel appears on the list screen, you can update a field and return to the same list without navigating through the complete editor.
The official Posts screen documentation describes Quick Edit as an inline edit for the post’s title, slug, date, author, password or private setting, categories, tags, comments, pings, status, and sticky setting. The exact controls visible to you can vary with the WordPress version and the capabilities assigned to your account.
Open Quick Edit from the Posts list
- Sign in to the WordPress dashboard.
- Open Posts > All Posts.
- Locate the post in the table. If the list has several pages, use its pagination or the list’s available filtering and search controls to find it.
- Hover over the post title. Row actions appear beneath the title.
- Select Quick Edit. An inline panel opens in that row; you remain on the posts list.
- Change the required fields, then select Update to save the panel’s values.
- After saving, use the post’s View link to check the public-facing result when the post is public, or verify the expected access behavior when it is protected, private, a draft, or pending review.
Quick Edit does not save merely because a value was typed. The change is committed when you choose Update. If you close or leave the panel first, treat the edits as unsaved.

Fields you can change inline
Title and slug
The Title field changes the headline stored for the post. The Slug is the URL-friendly post name: the editable final part of the post URL after the post has been saved. These fields are related but independent. A new headline does not automatically represent a deliberate URL decision, so inspect both before selecting Update.
When changing a headline on an established post, decide whether the existing URL should remain or whether the slug should also change. If you edit the slug, verify the resulting permalink from the post’s View link after saving. Quick Edit changes the stored slug; it does not provide the full-editor experience for revising the article body or other block content.

Date
The date control changes the publication date shown in the post record. Use it when the recorded date needs correction or when the post’s date should be moved as part of your editorial workflow. Check the status and visibility at the same time: a date change alone does not turn a draft or pending post into a published article.
Author
The Author control assigns the post to another available author. Only authors that your account is allowed to select appear, and the ability to make this assignment depends on role capabilities. If the expected author is missing, the limitation may be permissions rather than a problem with Quick Edit.
Categories and tags
Categories are the site’s grouping taxonomy, while tags are optional labels and are not hierarchical. Quick Edit can add or adjust both without opening the article. Review the selected terms before saving, especially when a change affects how visitors browse or filter the site.

Changing a category does not rewrite the post, and adding a tag does not create a category hierarchy. Treat the two controls as separate taxonomy decisions: use the category selection for the post’s group and tags for additional, optional descriptors.

Visibility and password protection
Quick Edit exposes the post’s visibility choices: public, password protected, or private. A password-protected post requires visitors to know the password. A private post is restricted to authorized site users.
Visibility is a high-impact setting. Before saving, confirm that you selected the intended option and, for password protection, that the password value is correct. After the update, use View and an appropriate signed-in or signed-out check to confirm the access behavior. Do not assume that a post remains publicly readable just because it is still present in the posts table.

Comments and pings
The Allow Comments control turns comments on or off for the individual post. Allow Pings controls whether pingbacks and trackbacks are allowed. These are separate choices, so disabling comments does not by itself describe the ping setting, and enabling one does not enable the other.
Review both controls when applying a discussion policy to an older post. Save with Update, then open the post’s public view to confirm that the displayed interaction options match the settings you intended.

The status control moves a post through workflow states such as Published, Draft, and Pending Review, subject to your account’s capabilities. Status is independent of the title, taxonomy, and date fields. A post can retain its categories and tags while moving between workflow states.

Take particular care when changing a draft or pending post to Published. Confirm the title, slug, date, visibility, and discussion settings before selecting Update, because the status change can make the post available to visitors immediately.
Sticky setting
The Make this a post-sticky option marks or unmarks the post as sticky. Whether visitors see a practical effect depends on the site’s theme, because the theme determines how sticky posts are presented. If you change this option, inspect the relevant front-end listing after saving rather than assuming every theme displays sticky posts in the same way.
Quick Edit versus the full Edit screen
Choose the screen based on the kind of change you need. Quick Edit is optimized for a small set of metadata and workflow fields; the full editor is required for the post’s content.

If the requested change involves a sentence, paragraph, block, image, embed, or other content inside the article, open the post’s Edit screen instead. Quick Edit is not a compressed version of the full editor; it is a metadata and workflow tool.

Safe operating sequence for common tasks
Change a headline while deciding about the URL
- Open Posts > All Posts and hover over the target title.
- Select Quick Edit.
- Enter the revised title.
- Inspect the slug. Leave it unchanged when the existing URL should remain, or edit it when the URL itself should change.
- Check status and visibility so the post is not accidentally exposed or hidden.
- Select Update.
- Open View and check the headline and permalink.
Correct categories or tags
- Open the inline panel for the target post.
- Adjust the category selection and tag values independently.
- Confirm that the selected category is the intended group and that optional tags are appropriate labels.
- Select Update.
- Use View or the site’s relevant archive and filtering views to verify the classification.
Turn comments or pings off
- Open Quick Edit for the post.
- Review Allow Comments and set it to the desired state.
- Review Allow Pings separately and set it to the desired state.
- Select Update.
- Open the post’s public view and confirm that the discussion behavior reflects both choices.
Move a post through the workflow
- Open the post’s inline panel.
- Check the title, slug, date, visibility, categories, tags, comments, and pings before touching status.
- Choose the required state, such as Draft, Pending Review, or Published, if your account is permitted to make that transition.
- Select Update.
- Verify the row’s status and use View when the result should be publicly accessible.
Change visibility
- Open Quick Edit and locate the visibility controls.
- Choose public, password protected, or private.
- For password protection, verify the password before saving. For a private post, confirm that restricted access is intentional.
- Select Update.
- Check the result using the access context that matters: public viewing for a public post, password entry for a protected post, or an authorized account for a private post.
Checks to make before selecting Update
- Identity: Make sure the inline panel belongs to the intended post, particularly when several titles are similar.
- URL: Review the slug whenever the title changes or a URL decision is part of the task.
- Publication state: Confirm that status and visibility agree with the intended audience.
- Taxonomy: Check categories and tags separately; a correct category does not guarantee correct tags.
- Discussion: Review comments and pings independently.
- Attribution: Verify the selected author if the assignment changes ownership or byline.
- Date: Confirm the date shown in the record, especially when correcting an older post.
- Theme-dependent behavior: If changing the sticky option, remember that the theme controls how sticky posts appear.
- Permission: If a field or status is unavailable, do not treat the absence as a saving error; available fields and transitions depend on your role capabilities and WordPress version.
What to do when Quick Edit is not enough
You need to rewrite the article
Open the post’s Edit screen. Quick Edit does not expose paragraphs, blocks, images, embeds, revisions, or other post-body controls, so attempting to use it for a rewrite will leave the article text unchanged.
A field or status is missing
WordPress versions and user capabilities affect which fields and status changes are available. Confirm that you opened the correct post type and that your account has permission to make the requested change. If another authorized user can see the control, ask that user to perform the update or adjust the role through the site’s normal administration process.
The public result is different from the saved row
Use the post’s View link after saving and inspect the specific setting you changed. For visibility, test with the appropriate visitor or authorized-user context. For a slug, check the permalink. For comments and pings, inspect the post’s interaction controls. For sticky behavior, inspect the site listing because the theme determines how the setting is presented.
The update had unintended consequences
Reopen the same row with Quick Edit, compare each affected field with the intended values, and select Update again. If the problem concerns article text rather than metadata, use the full Edit screen. When a status or visibility change exposed or hid a post unexpectedly, correct those settings first and verify the public result with View.
