How to Raise Money With Video Crowdfunding

A practical guide to choosing a crowdfunding model, budgeting the full project, filming a clear and credible campaign video, and setting supporter expectations.

To raise money with video crowdfunding, choose the right type of funding, set a goal that covers the full cost of the project and any promises to supporters, then make a clear video showing who you are, what exists now, why you need support, and what you will do with the money. End with one direct invitation to pledge, donate, invest, or share—whichever fits the campaign. A video can help people understand a campaign, but it cannot guarantee funding.

Choose the kind of crowdfunding first

“Crowdfunding” can mean several different arrangements. The model determines what supporters provide and what they can reasonably expect in return.

Model What supporters provide What to check
Reward-based Contributions in exchange for a promised reward, often the project or a related item. Whether funding is all-or-nothing or flexible, and whether you can make and deliver every promised reward.
Donation-based Contributions without an investment stake or necessarily a reward. Who controls the funds, what they will be used for, and whether any claimed charitable or tax treatment actually applies.
Membership Recurring support, commonly in return for ongoing material or access. Whether you can reliably provide what members are promised over time.
Debt lending A loan that is expected to be repaid under its terms. Repayment obligations, interest, eligibility, and applicable local rules.
Equity or securities An investment interest in a business or offering. Securities rules and the authorized platform and communications process for the jurisdiction.

Kickstarter’s September 11, 2026 overview describes Kickstarter as reward-based and all-or-nothing, GoFundMe as donation-based and flexible, Indiegogo as reward-based with options that vary, and Patreon as membership support with recurring contributions. These are platform descriptions, not guarantees of eligibility or fixed terms; check the current rules for your location and project. Kickstarter’s crowdfunding overview

For a video-game project, be precise about what backers are funding: for example, a playable prototype, a particular production milestone, or a finished release. Do not imply that a contribution is automatically a purchase of a completed game or that an unfinished feature already works.

Build a realistic goal and campaign plan

Work out the amount needed to complete the stated scope, not just the amount needed to begin. Include development or production, packaging and fulfillment for physical rewards, shipping, platform and payment fees, taxes, and a realistic allowance for delays or changes. There is no universal fee rate or goal formula: check the platform’s applicable fee schedule, payout timing, eligibility, and tax handling before setting the target.

  • Define what the project will deliver and what is outside the funded scope.
  • Map the budget to milestones so supporters can see what the funds enable.
  • For physical rewards, account for production, packaging, shipping, destinations, and likely fulfillment issues.
  • Clarify refund conditions and how you will communicate delays, changes, or risks.
  • Check whether the platform is all-or-nothing or flexible; the consequences of missing the goal differ.

Indiegogo’s creator setup guidance recommends preparing a draft project page, checking eligibility and fees, and planning rewards, shipping, taxes, and refunds. Its setup flow includes the project story, rewards and add-ons, shipping and tax information, testing the campaign flow, and submission for review. It also describes an upcoming phase to build an audience, an active funding phase, and post-campaign pledge management and fulfillment. See Indiegogo’s creator setup guidance.

Plan a campaign video people can trust

Use the video to make the project understandable and personal, not to substitute for the campaign page. Kickstarter recommends introducing the creator, explaining the project’s features and benefits, sharing the creator’s backstory and relevant evidence or milestones, and making a clear call to action. Script and storyboard the main points and shots before recording. There is no established universal ideal runtime or reliable causal estimate for how much a video increases funding.

  1. Introduce yourself and the project. Say what you are making in plain language and who it is for.
  2. Show the real current state. For a game, show actual gameplay, a prototype, a work sample, design materials, or the development process. Label what is finished, in progress, or planned.
  3. Explain why it matters now. Describe the need, creative idea, or opportunity and why you are the person or team making it.
  4. Connect the goal to the plan. Explain what the requested funding will pay for and which milestones it is intended to reach. Put detailed budget and timeline information on the campaign page.
  5. Be candid about uncertainty. Name meaningful production, staffing, technical, schedule, or fulfillment risks and explain how you plan to respond.
  6. Set expectations accurately. Describe rewards or supporter benefits without promising features, dates, or outcomes you cannot substantiate.
  7. Ask for one next step. Invite viewers to pledge, donate, invest, or share as appropriate to the funding model.

Keep claims consistent between the video and campaign page. Kickstarter’s story guidance asks creators to explain what they are making, why, the production stage, risks, timeline, milestones, budget, partnerships, and plans for addressing challenges. It also advises providing key information in text for people using screen readers. Read Kickstarter’s story guidance.

Show the project honestly

Do not present concept art, a scripted mock-up, or a planned feature as working gameplay. Kickstarter’s current rules require honest presentation and materials the creator has rights to use. For Design and Technology, prototype demonstrations must reflect the product’s current state; CGI or special effects may not depict functionality that does not yet exist. Disclose software or hardware dependencies that are not developed. Kickstarter lists Film & Video and other creative fields among its categories. Check Kickstarter’s project rules and the rules for the platform you choose.

Record with the equipment you have

You do not need a studio setup to explain a project clearly. Kickstarter’s 2016 DIY checklist says a webcam or smartphone, good lighting, a quiet and tidy space, a planned script, a friend to hold the camera, the project itself (including sketches or prototypes), and the creator are enough to start.

  • Use a phone or webcam that records intelligible picture and sound.
  • Face a window or use available lighting so viewers can see you and the project.
  • Choose a quiet location and reduce distracting background noise and clutter.
  • Have a second person hold the camera, or use a smartphone tripod as an optional convenience if filming alone.
  • Show a real prototype, work sample, design, or relevant process rather than relying only on abstract claims.

A polished production is not a substitute for a credible plan. Kickstarter’s 2025 lesson says 75% of successful Kickstarter campaigns feature a video, but the lesson text does not state the dataset period, denominator definition, or methodology. That platform-reported figure does not establish that adding a video causes success. See Kickstarter’s campaign-video lesson.

Choose a platform by fit, not by name recognition

Before launching, compare the current terms that change the economics and obligations of your particular campaign:

  • Funding model: donation, reward, membership, debt, or equity.
  • Goal mechanics: all-or-nothing or flexible funding, and what happens if the goal is missed.
  • Availability: creator eligibility, project eligibility, and supported countries.
  • Money flow: platform and payment fees, payout timing, and any conditions on releasing funds.
  • Supporter obligations: what contributors are promised and how changes or refunds are handled.
  • Fulfillment tools: updates, pledge management, shipping, and tax support.

The FTC recommends checking what a crowdfunding platform keeps in fees and when funds are released. Platform terms, eligibility, fees, and local tax or legal treatment can change, so verify them directly before launch. The FTC’s guidance is at Donating Through Crowdfunding and Fundraising Platforms.

Explain risks and protect supporter trust

Be clear about who controls the funds, what they are for, what stage the project has reached, and what could prevent or delay delivery. The FTC cautions that organizers control funds raised and may not deliver them to the intended person or cause. Donations to individuals are not tax-deductible, even if an organizer later intends to give the money to charity. For a business project or invention, a successful campaign does not guarantee completion, and a contribution is not necessarily a purchase of a finished product.

“When you give to a business project or invention through a crowdfunding site, you’re not buying the product. You’re simply helping fund its production.” — Federal Trade Commission

That distinction matters for game campaigns too: explain whether supporters are funding development, receiving a reward, or making an investment. Do not use a video to blur those arrangements.

Special case: U.S. equity crowdfunding

An investment campaign involving securities is not an ordinary reward or donation campaign. The SEC issuer guide says a Regulation Crowdfunding offering must be conducted exclusively through one online platform operated by a broker-dealer or funding portal registered with the SEC and FINRA. It describes pre-filing “testing the waters” as subject to restrictions, including statements that no money is being solicited or accepted, that no purchase offer can be accepted before the relevant filing and requirements, and that indications of interest create no obligation. See the SEC issuer guide.

The SEC’s Regulation Crowdfunding interpretation says an issuer may advertise offering terms outside the intermediary’s platform only in notices limited to information described in Rule 204(b); it also says a video may advertise offering terms if it complies with that rule. The SEC page was last updated July 9, 2026. Do not repurpose reward-campaign video advice as legal advice for an investment solicitation; consult current SEC guidance and qualified counsel for the actual offering and jurisdiction: SEC Regulation Crowdfunding guidance.

Or let it run in the cloud
