To reach Trainer level 42 in Pokémon GO now, earn XP through gameplay; the old level-specific task checklist no longer gates progress. Niantic’s October 15, 2025 update rebalanced leveling, raised the Trainer level cap from 50 to 80, and removed Level-Up Research tasks for levels 41–50. Check your Trainer Profile for your current level and progress.
What do you need to reach level 42 now?
There are no level-42-specific Level-Up Research tasks under the system Niantic introduced on October 15, 2025. Progress through XP instead. Niantic says Trainers earn XP through gameplay actions such as catching Pokémon, visiting PokéStops, and battling; its Help Center notes that the XP needed to advance increases with Trainer level. To see where your account stands, open your Trainer Profile in the game. Your current level and progress appear there, along with a Level-Up Research entry when research tasks apply. For levels 41–50, that entry is no longer a set of required tasks; Niantic’s current guidance says Level-Up Research applies to levels 70–80. Pokémon GO Help Center: Level-Up Research
How to make practical progress toward level 42
Because the available sources do not establish a fastest XP strategy or a current event bonus, there is no evidence-based reason to promise one activity is universally quickest. Build XP into the play you already do and use the in-game progress display to track your account.

Niantic also documents a Daily Adventure Egg for Trainers from level 15: it hatches after 1 km of exploration and awards 10,000 XP. Treat it as one available XP opportunity, not a level 42 requirement or proof of the fastest route. Details appear in Niantic’s October 2025 leveling update: Pokémon GO leveling update.
What changed in October 2025?
Niantic’s October 15, 2025 update raised the maximum Trainer level from 50 to 80 and rebalanced the XP progression. It also removed Level-Up Research requirements for levels 41–50. That change is why older guides may show a different XP curve or tell you to complete a task list before advancing.

The update published total XP thresholds for selected milestone levels, but not level 42. The figures below are the totals Niantic published in 2025; they are reference points, not a basis for calculating an unpublished level 42 threshold.
| Trainer level | Total XP published by Niantic in 2025 |
|---|---|
| 10 | 48,000 |
| 20 | 258,000 |
| 30 | 1,083,000 |
| 40 | 3,953,000 |
| 50 | 12,753,000 |
| 60 | 34,353,000 |
| 70 | 85,853,000 |
| 80 | 203,353,000 |
Niantic did not include an exact level 42 total in that announcement. Don’t infer one from these milestones or rely on older tables: your Trainer Profile is the practical way to check your own progress.

Why older level 42 checklists are different
Level 42 used to have Level-Up Research requirements. In its 2020 GO Beyond announcement, Niantic described the level 42 challenge as testing evolution knowledge, including evolving Eevee into its available evolutions and using Evolution items on certain Pokémon. Pokémon GO: GO Beyond level cap increase announcement
Older checklists may also mention Excellent Throws and berries. Those belong to the historical task-list era, not the current requirements for levels 41–50. Niantic’s 2025 update removed those Level-Up Research requirements, so do not spend time completing an old checklist specifically to unlock level 42.

If your game shows a different requirement
Check the live Trainer Profile and the Level-Up Research display in your own game. If an older guide conflicts with what appears there, account for the October 2025 system change: old level 42 task lists and XP tables describe an earlier progression system, while the game shows your current account status.
