If your PS5 is acting strangely after an update, you can rebuild its database from Safe Mode: turn the console off, start Safe Mode, then choose Clear Cache and Rebuild Database > Rebuild Database. This scans the drive and creates a new database of system content. It may help with certain system-feature problems, but it does not install a failed system update or guarantee that every post-update issue will be fixed.
Before rebuilding, identify what went wrong
A normal restart is a sensible first step if the PS5 can reach its home screen. Then choose the troubleshooting path that matches the problem:
- The system update failed or the home screen is unavailable: retry the system software update rather than treating Rebuild Database as an update installer. Sony’s Safe Mode system software update instructions cover updating from Safe Mode and the manual USB fallback.
- A game or app update will not install: Sony recommends checking the network connection, restarting, making sure the console system software is current, and deleting and reinstalling the affected game or app. Its game and app update troubleshooting guide also points to Safe Mode’s cache and database options.
- The console has system-feature problems or a deleted game still appears on Home: Rebuild Database is one of Sony’s listed Safe Mode options for these cases.
- The console has startup or storage trouble: consider Repair Console Storage in Safe Mode. Sony says this option does not erase data.
These options have different purposes. Rebuilding is not a hardware repair, and Sony does not describe it as a universal fix for problems caused by an update.
How to rebuild the PS5 database in Safe Mode
- Turn the PS5 fully off. Hold the power button for about three seconds, until the console shuts down. Wait for the power indicator to stop blinking and turn off.
- Start Safe Mode. Press and hold the power button again. Release it after the second beep; Sony says the second beep sounds about seven seconds after the first.
- Connect the controller. Use a USB cable to connect the controller to the console, then press the PS button.
- Select the rebuild option. Choose Clear Cache and Rebuild Database, then choose Rebuild Database. Do not choose the cache option unless that is the troubleshooting step you intend to run.
- Let the console complete the operation and restart. Check whether the original issue remains. Sony does not specify a standard duration for a rebuild, so allow the console to finish rather than assuming it is stuck based on elapsed time alone.
Sony describes Rebuild Database as scanning the drive and creating a new database of all content on the system. Its Safe Mode guide explains the available options and how to enter Safe Mode.

What the other Safe Mode options do
The similarly grouped Safe Mode choices are not interchangeable. Use the one that fits the symptom, and distinguish maintenance options from resets that erase data.

If the system software update itself failed
Use Sony’s update recovery instructions rather than relying on a database rebuild. When the console can reach Settings, retry the update there. If the home screen is inaccessible, use Safe Mode’s Update System Software option. If that still fails, Sony provides a manual USB update procedure.
The manual method requires a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT and Sony’s specified folder and filename structure: PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP. Follow Sony’s official download and installation steps exactly; Sony cautions against interrupting the installation or using update files or methods outside its instructions. A USB drive is needed only for this manual update route, not to rebuild the database. See Sony’s update-in-Safe-Mode and USB instructions.

When to back up or contact PlayStation Support
If rebuilding does not resolve the issue, use Sony’s CE-107750-0 troubleshooting sequence where relevant, or consult the PS5 Support page for repair guidance. Treat Reset PS5 and Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) as later, destructive steps—not as alternate names for rebuilding. Back up data first if the console is accessible and before selecting either option, as Sony advises for options that cause data loss.
