For most people buying a new Steam Deck, the OLED is the stronger all-around choice: it has a larger HDR screen with a higher refresh-rate ceiling, a bigger battery, newer wireless standards and less weight. Choose the LCD instead when it costs meaningfully less where you live and its smaller 60 Hz screen and shorter estimated battery range suit your needs.

Specifications are from Valve’s model comparison, LCD technical page and OLED technical page. Price is not included because it varies by region and can change; check the current Steam listing for your location before deciding.
What the OLED screen changes
Both models have a 1280 × 800 resolution, but the OLED panel is 7.4 inches rather than 7 inches and supports HDR and refresh rates up to 90 Hz. That can make the OLED a more appealing screen for games with vivid contrast, HDR support or frame rates that can take advantage of its higher refresh ceiling.
The refresh-rate ceiling does not mean every game runs at 90 frames per second. Actual frame rate depends on the game and its settings. Also compare brightness figures carefully: Valve lists 400 nits as typical for the LCD, while the OLED figures are 600 nits for SDR and up to 1,000 nits peak for HDR. Those are not identical measurement conditions, so they should not be read as a direct like-for-like brightness test.

Battery life: larger capacity, but runtime depends on the game
Valve lists a 40 Wh battery and estimated gameplay range of 2–8 hours for LCD, compared with 50 Wh and 3–12 hours for OLED. These are manufacturer estimates, not guaranteed play times; game workload and use affect how long either model lasts. Valve also says the OLED has “30-50% more battery life” on its OLED overview. Treat that as Valve’s claim, not a promise of a fixed extra number of hours in every game.
Storage: decide how much you want included
Valve’s current comparison lists a 256 GB LCD configuration, alongside 512 GB and 1 TB OLED configurations. Every model supports microSD expansion; Valve specifies UHS-I support for SD, SDXC and SDHC cards in its Steam Deck FAQ.

If your library is large, compare the included capacity and local prices before choosing. A UHS-I microSD card for Steam Deck is an optional way to add storage, but the right capacity depends on your library and budget. The 1 TB OLED is the only configuration Valve lists with premium anti-glare etched glass, a potentially useful finish in reflective environments.
Wireless, weight and internal updates
The OLED supports Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3; the LCD lists Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5.0. Those newer standards may matter if your network and accessories support them. Valve lists the OLED at about 640 g and the LCD at about 669 g, making the OLED the lighter model on paper.

Valve also lists a 6 nm APU for OLED and a 7 nm APU for LCD. That process difference, along with OLED’s internal updates, is not by itself evidence of a large general gaming-performance jump. The useful way to think about OLED is as a bundle of refinements to the display, battery, connectivity, weight and internals—not a guaranteed new performance tier.

Choose the OLED if
- You want the larger HDR screen and higher refresh-rate ceiling.
- You value the larger published battery capacity and runtime estimate.
- You want newer wireless standards or the lighter listed weight.
- The OLED’s included storage or the 1 TB model’s etched-glass finish fits your needs.
Choose the LCD if
- It is meaningfully cheaper in your region at the time you buy.
- A 7-inch, 60 Hz LCD is adequate for the games you play.
- You are comfortable with its lower published battery capacity and estimated runtime.
For an upgrade from an LCD Deck you already own, weigh the OLED’s screen, battery and hardware refinements against the price of replacing a device that still meets your needs. Valve’s specifications establish the differences, but do not establish a broad gaming-performance uplift.
