How to Reconnect a Church Stream After YouTube Live Disconnects

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To reconnect a church livestream, check the event in YouTube Studio, identify whether the failure is in the encoder, stream settings, or internet connection, then restart the encoder with the correct event and stream key. Verify that YouTube is receiving picture and sound before telling viewers the stream is back. A stream key reset is only appropriate when the key is wrong or compromised—not as a universal fix for every disconnect.

How do I reconnect my YouTube live stream after it disconnects?

  1. Open the event in YouTube Studio. Go to Create > Go Live, then select the scheduled or current event in Live Control Room. On the Stream tab, check the health indicator and any displayed errors. YouTube shows timestamps for stream errors; red errors are critical and yellow errors are moderate. See YouTube’s live streaming error messages.
  2. Check what the encoder is producing. In your streaming software, confirm the preview or output, audio, connection state, encoder errors, and CPU load. Check a local recording if one is available. YouTube recommends inspecting encoder output and errors when troubleshooting; if that output is healthy but YouTube is not receiving it, investigate the outbound internet connection. See YouTube’s live stream troubleshooting steps.
  3. Confirm the event and stream key. Make sure the encoder is pointed at the intended YouTube event and uses the key currently shown in Live Control Room. A stream key connects the encoder to YouTube’s ingest destination. If it is incorrect, update the encoder before starting it. YouTube describes keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address” in Manage live stream settings.
  4. Restart the encoder feed. Once the event and key are confirmed, start or restart the encoder. Watch Live Control Room to see whether YouTube receives the feed again.
  5. Correct any specific error shown. For an incorrect-format error, YouTube’s cited guidance calls for H.264 video and AAC audio. Change the setting that the error identifies, then check whether the feed returns in Live Control Room.
  6. Verify picture and sound before announcing recovery. Confirm the event is receiving the encoder feed and that both audio and video look right. YouTube’s guidance does not establish that every outage resumes the viewer-facing event as the same session, so do not promise uninterrupted continuity until the event status is clear.

Why did my church livestream go offline?

Locate where the failure appears before changing settings. Compare the encoder’s output with what Live Control Room reports, then use the actual error or connection indicator to choose the next check.

What you see Likely direction to investigate Next check
The encoder is disconnected and its output is unhealthy Capture or audio sources, encoder error, CPU load, or streaming software Check sources and encoder status; consult YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance.
Encoder output looks and sounds healthy, but YouTube is not receiving it Outbound connection between the church’s network and YouTube Check connectivity from the encoder’s network; contact the ISP if the connection is faulty.
Live Control Room reports an incorrect format Encoder output format Use H.264 video and AAC audio, as specified for the cited error in YouTube’s error guidance.
The encoder shows dropped frames or intermittent disconnections Unstable or insufficient network path to the ingest server Check outbound connection quality and whether it can sustain the configured bitrate. OBS says these symptoms indicate a network issue between the computer and remote ingest server; see its connection troubleshooting guide.
YouTube reports a startup or key problem, or the key may be compromised Stream-key configuration or security Check the current key in Studio and update the encoder if needed. Reset only when warranted; YouTube says only an owner or manager can reset a key.

How do I reconnect OBS to YouTube Live?

Use the same diagnosis whether OBS is on a church laptop or another computer: check OBS’s output and connection indicators, then compare them with Live Control Room. OBS explains that dropped frames or intermittent disconnects point to a network issue between the computer and the remote ingest server in its Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, dated September 30, 2024.

  • If OBS output itself is unhealthy, check the selected video and audio sources, encoder errors, and CPU load before reconnecting.
  • If OBS output is healthy while YouTube receives no feed, test the outbound connection rather than repeatedly changing video settings.
  • If Live Control Room identifies a format error, correct the stated format issue; YouTube’s cited guidance specifies H.264 video and AAC audio for that error.
  • If the event or key is wrong, select the correct event and use the current key from Studio. Changing the key in YouTube also means updating it in OBS.

Should I reset the YouTube stream key?

Reset the key only if it is wrong, exposed, or YouTube’s startup troubleshooting points to a key issue. A key is the encoder’s destination credential; resetting it without updating OBS or another encoder will prevent that encoder from connecting. YouTube’s troubleshooting page advises getting a new key and updating the encoder for a third-party encoder startup error, but does not make key reset the remedy for every dropped connection. Only an owner or manager can reset a key, according to YouTube’s stream settings guidance.

Will my YouTube livestream come back if the internet drops?

Not necessarily. If the encoder loses its outbound connection, YouTube may stop receiving the feed. Once connectivity returns, restart or re-establish the encoder feed and check Live Control Room. The available official guidance does not establish a universal guarantee that the same viewer-facing event resumes after every outage, so confirm the event’s status before directing viewers back to it.
